Is it just me, or does summer vacation start with ambitious plans of nostalgic 1990s style summer fun activities and end with kids who’ve forgotten how to tie their shoes while setting a new world record for consecutive days of dirty hair and cups of Goldfish?

If you’re nodding so hard your neck hurts, welcome to the club. 

Let’s be real: summer parenting without a plan is like grocery shopping while hungry. It’s inevitably chaotic, potentially expensive, and you somehow end up with things nobody actually needs. (Looking at you, Costco impulse-purchased blow-up water slide.)

After years of summer survival mode (which often consisted of me hiding in my room, eating ranch cornnuts, scrolling Instagram while wondering if screen time limits are really that important) I’ve found something that works with both big and little kids. So today, I’m sharing a sanity-saving tool with you: THE WEEKLY SUMMER SCHEDULE FOR YOUR KIDS.

Not just any schedule, mind you. A flexible, simple, realistic summer routine that gives your kids the structure they benefit from while preserving your sanity. It’s also great for summer babysitters! It takes the pressure off them entertaining the kids all day and guarantees the kids won’t have endless screentime. 

Why Your Kids (and You) Actually NEED a Weekly Summer Schedule

Before we dive into these game-changing templates, let’s talk about why unstructured summer chaos isn’t actually the carefree childhood experience we think it is.

Kids thrive on knowing what comes next. This is especially true if you have a neurodivergent kiddo. It’s like how you feel when your favorite bakery closes unexpectedly – disoriented, betrayed, and suddenly unable to function as a normal human being. (I’m still mourning you, Pearl Snap Kolaches. ) 

Research shows that kids with some structure during the summer months…

• Retain more academic skills (bye-bye, summer slide!)
• Experience less anxiety (fewer meltdowns = less gray hair)
• Develop better independence (hallelujah!)
• Spend less time glued to screens (so long self-imposed guilt trips)

Plus, a good daily schedule means you’ll stop hearing “What are we doing today?” every 3.7 minutes, which honestly is reason enough for me.

That’s why I’ve sketched out a basic, daily summer schedule that you can tailor to your family’s wake-up time. It’s divided into 5 blocks that can be adjusted to fit your family’s needs. It’s just enough structure to give your summer some predictability and routine without making you feel tied down to the clock. If you’re a Type B like me, this one’s for you!!!

So let’s jump into the schedule!

Block 1: Rise and Shine

First up in our daily summer schedule for kids is the morning routine block. Because how the day starts pretty much determines the trajectory of the afternoon and evening. 

First 1- 1.5 Hours of the Day: Morning Routine

• Rise and Shine: Feed the pets, breakfast, get dressed, brush teeth, etc.
• Morning Chores: 20ish minutes of age-appropriate responsibilities 

I REALLY enjoy a slow morning routine, as do my girls. Sitting, reading, and drinking coffee in the morning is probably my favorite activity of the day. So I’ve included plenty of time for that. Let the kids enjoy a slow morning, too. Just because there are chores to do doesn’t mean there isn’t time to first enjoy a slow breakfast and play with the kitties before scooping poop out of  the litter box. 

Pro tips:

• Create a visual checklist for younger kids with pictures of each task.
• For tweens and teens, resist the urge to wake them before 9 AM unless absolutely necessary. The hormone-fueled creatures need their beauty sleep and trust me, NO ONE wants to deal with a sleep-deprived 13-year-old. If you don’t believe me, I’ll loan you mine for a day. 

Block 2: Move Yo Body

Next up: Move your body and play. Those video games and iPad screens will win unless we set the expectation to get outdoors and move around.

I planned this block for early in the day because I live in Texas, and we are literally dying outdoors by 10 am. If this block needs to wait until evening when the summer sun isn’t melting you alive, then alter accordingly. But you’d be surprised how well a sprinkler and some lemonade can keep the kiddos cool and comfy outdoors. 

1.5 Hours: Get Moving!

• Outdoor play, bike rides, sports, yard games, playground, walk the dog, etc.
• Wet Wednesday Special: Water play activities, swimming, etc. 
• Field Trip Friday: Museums, splash pads, water parks, the movies, the skating rink, etc. Beat the heat and have fun all day!

An outdoor block is non-negotiable, no matter the time of day you plan it. The science is clear: physical activity improves focus, mood, and cognitive function. Sunshine gives you all that vitamin D you need for a healthy immune system. Time in nature boosts mood and reduces stress for EVERYONE. This block is for you, too, grownups! 

Block 3: Brain Time (That’s Actually Fun!)

There’s no need to separate “learning time” from “creative time. They’re two sides of the same developmental coin. The goal is to make this fun, so the kids have no idea their brains are working. It’s like hiding vegetables in brownies. You can fill this block with arts and crafts and other activities from your summer bucket list.

Theming your days gives kids something specific and novel to look forward to while providing the predictability that their developing brains love. Plus, it makes it a lot easer on you to plan! Win, win for everyone.

1.5 Hours: Brain and Create Time:

• Make-it Monday: Extended craft, art project, or DIY Building project. (I love Kiwi Kits for this! My dad has been doing these with all the grands, and it’s been a great bonding and creative activity that’s minimal prep.)
• Try-It Tuesday: Learn about something new, then try it! (think recipes, art techniques, gardening, coding, sewing skills, etc.)
• Wordy Wednesday: Reading adventure day! This is a great time to head to your local library or used bookstore. Join a reading challenge at your local library, Half Price Books, Barnes and Noble. You can find a full list from Money Saving Mom. You can also incorporate language-based games for older kiddos, like Scrabble, Bananagrams, Scattergories, etc. 
• Thoughtful Thursday: Community service planning and creation (create cards, make a meal for someone, etc). Social-emotional learning is just as important as skills learning. Having a specific time each week to focus on this is integral to growing emotionally-healthy humans. 
• Field Trip Friday: Need I say more? If you’ve got littles, you might want to start wrapping it up, and heading back home for the next block. (My favorite!)

Block 4: The Afternoon Sanity Recoup

It’s time for lunch and a mandatory decompression time (aka nap time). Besides morning coffee time, this might be my favorite block of the day. Also known as iced coffee hour.

1+ Hours: Refuel and Recoup

• Lunch (pro tip: let the big kids make it and clean up!)
• Rest/Quiet time (for EVERYONE)

Eat a quick lunch and relish some rest time. If your kiddos are past the napping stage, encourage them to do some quiet activities wherever you prefer.

This is when I choose to pull out the screen time. If I want some guaranteed quiet to read a book or get some writing done, I know I’ll get fewer interruptions if they can watch a movie or play some Roblox. But you do you, and what’s best for your family.

Block 5: Free Play with Friends

If you’re lucky enough to live in a neighborhood with kids or can easily rotate play dates with friends, then this block that combines socializing with free play is easy and so good for kids’ develpment. 

2+ Hours: Free Play and Social Time

• Unstructured indoor or outdoor play with minimal parental helicoptering (ahem)
• Friend time (playdates, neighborhood activities, etc.)
• Solo hobby exploration

This is where the real childhood memories happen. Remember running through sprinklers with neighborhood kids until dinner? Making mud pies in the backyard? Recording cassette tapes full of your own original songs? (Just me?) This is that block. It’s a non-negotiable, magical time when kids can let loose their creativity, learn negotiation skills, conflict resolution, and creative problem-solving.

Putting It All Together (Without Losing Your Mind)

Now for the moment of truth: how to implement this schedule without becoming the summer drill sergeant your children will complain about to their future therapists.

1. Print it out and display it prominently

Stick on the refrigerator, not buried in a drawer of good intentions next to the Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown DVD your postpartum self bought back in 2010. 

2. Use verbal or visual cues for transitions

Maybe it’s a timer, or silly song or dance that signals “It’s time for the next thing!”

This doesn’t have to be hard and fast. If your ADHD kid is hyperfocused on a science project, if it’s possible, let them finish. But if it’s absolutely necessary to transition, don’t just spring it on them and exepct them to obey immediately. As a mom of a kid who STRUGGLES with transitions, I give multiple heads-ups, especially if we have to leave the house at a specific time or are expecting company.

And be sure to offer praise when they do transition well. It’s something to celebrate! 

3. Build in flexibility

This is a FRAMEWORK, not prison. The best summer schedule is one that is realistic. Some days you’ll nail every block. Other days, you’ll abandon ship by 10 AM and have a movie marathon. Both are fine! I’m naturally a fly by the seat of my pants kind of person, so adhering to a summer daily routine is TOUGH for me. I have to give myself some grace and know that it’s not always gonna happen, and that’s totally ok. 

If you don’t want to start full-out, maybe just have 2 days a week of schedule and the leave the rest open to whatever. You know yourself and your kids best, so do what works. 

4. Prep the day before

Make a Michaels order for those craft supplies, pack bags for outings, and generally become the overnight summer fairy your post-late-night Netflix marathon zombie self will thank you for. 

5. Lower your standards considerably

That Pinterest craft will not look like the picture, no sirree.  Your zoo field trip in the 95 degree heat might will likely end with ice cream bribes. Your child might take pool baths 8 days in a row. IT’S ALL FINE.

The real goal here isn’t perfect summer productivity. It’s finding the balance between structure and freedom where kids thrive, and parents maintain just enough sanity to make it to mid-August.

Remember, the most important thing isn’t checking every box on the schedule. It’s being present enough to notice when your kid makes up a ridiculous new dance move, builds something amazing with sticks in the backyard, or suddenly wants to tell you about their elaborate fantasy world while helping with dinner prep. Above all else, it’s minimizing the screentime and encouraging kids to experience the world and use their imaginations.

The fabrics you choose make a huge difference when packing for a trip abroad. Prioritize lightweight, breathable, wrinkle-resistant materials that look great even after hours rolled up in your suitcase. While I tend to avoid polyester most of the time, there’s no doubt that it is more wrinkle-resistant than cotton. If you don’t want to spend your mornings ironing your clothes,  look for cotton blends with polyester. If you prefer more natural, look for rayon, jersey or nylon.

Here are my tried and true tips to make planning your budget travel trip in Europe affordable and feasible: 

Adjust Your Destination: Check Neighboring Countries for the Cheapest Flights

You can save some serious cash by flying into a neighboring country or city. When we first planned our family trip to Germany, we saved hundreds of dollars by flying into Paris. And bonus, we were able to experience two countries! If you’re planning to rent a car and love to explore other places, this is a great option. If, however, you’re relying on train trips and planes, it might not save you much money. Take some time and play around with the routes. 

And you should also check the prices for differing arrival and departure cities. This is a great way to save money, especially if you’re booking flights with points or airmiles. 

Book Budget Accommodations with Kitchens 

This is huge, friends. If you can cook breakfast and pack some lunches, you’ll save 30-50% on food costs. We’re not talking about giving up all the amazing local cuisine – we still typically eat out at least once a day! But making our own breakfast and grabbing groceries for a picnic lunch or dinner frees up money for those nicer meals and treats throughout the week. 

Even if you don’t have a kitchen available, find a hotel or hostel with breakfast included. And you can still grab a supermarket lunch each day to cut down on food expenses. 

Explore Different Ways to Travel Around Europe

Living in Fort Worth, Texas, we have one easy way to get around, and that’s by car. And when I say easy, I actually mean sitting in 10 minutes of traffic just to get out of your neighborhood. So naturally, one of my favorite things to do in other cities is take public transportation. Taking the bus or rail can save you a lot of money versus expensive taxis or other ride-sharing services.

If you’re traveling with a large family or group or are planning to travel through multiple cities or countries, you might consider renting a car. Let me break down the programs that actually deliver value for families, based on the latest rankings and my own research into what works when you’re booking for multiple people.

Best Airline Rewards Programs

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan (Now Called Atmos Rewards)

Alaska Airlines took the number one spot for best airline rewards program again this year, and for good reason. What makes this program special for families is that you earn miles based on the distance you fly, not how much you spend on your ticket. This is HUGE if you’re booking basic economy to save money – you still earn the same miles as someone in first class. And starting in 2026, you’ll have the option to choose whether you want to earn points based on distance, price paid, or segments flown. This should appeal to both business and economy travelers!

The Atmos Rewards program offers some seriously useful perks once you reach elite status, including free upgrades, checked bags, and same-day flight changes. Plus, Alaska Airlines is part of the oneworld alliance, which means you can earn and redeem miles on partner airlines like American Airlines and British Airways. That flexibility is clutch when you’re trying to find four seats together on the same flight.

And as of October 2025, Hawaiian Airlines has joined the Atmos rewards family and will help you build up those Atmos loyalty points!

United MileagePlus

United jumped to the number two spot last year, and it’s an excellent choice if you live near a United hub. The airline has an absolutely massive route network – over 40 airline partners through the Star Alliance – which gives you tons of options for using your miles.

What I love about United for families: they launched a partnership with JetBlue in late 2025, which will make it even easier to earn and redeem miles on flights your family actually wants to take. Plus, you can use MileagePlus miles for hotel stays with major brands like Marriott, Hyatt, and others, giving you more flexibility in how you redeem.

American Airlines AAdvantage

American Airlines AAdvantage ranks third, and it’s a solid program with access to over 900 destinations through oneworld partners. The program offers loyalty point boosts that help you achieve elite status faster, which can make family travel so much more comfortable with perks like priority boarding and free checked bags.

One tip: if you fly American frequently, those free checked bags alone can save a family of four around $120-$240 per round trip. That adds up fast.

Southwest Rapid Rewards

Now, Southwest didn’t rank in the top three overall, but I have to mention them because they’re phenomenal for families. Southwest has no blackout dates – literally every seat on every flight is available to book with points. And they offer the famous Companion Pass, which lets one person fly free (just paying taxes and fees, usually around $5.60 each way) for up to two years.

For families, this is game-changing. Earn the Companion Pass, and suddenly you’re only paying for three tickets instead of four. Southwest also lets families with children under 6 board early, which makes getting seats together much easier.

Best Hotel Rewards Programs

Choice Privileges

Choice Privileges took the number one spot for hotel rewards programs in 2025, and honestly, I think it’s because they just get it. Choice Hotels operates over 7,400 properties ranging from budget-friendly Econo Lodge to upscale Cambria Hotels, and even includes Radisson properties now.

What makes Choice Privileges great for families is how quickly you can earn a free night. The earning structure is straightforward, and you can reach elite status after just 10 nights, which gets you perks like room upgrades, early check-in, and late checkout. 

Marriott Bonvoy

Marriott Bonvoy is the behemoth of hotel loyalty programs, and while it can be complex, it offers incredible value for families. With 30+ brands and thousands of properties worldwide, you’ve got options for every budget and travel style. It’s the first loyalty program we joined 15 years ago, and we have booked literally dozens of rooms on points.

Here’s what matters for larger families: many Marriott properties offer a 50% second-room discount when kids 16 and under occupy it. (Note: the discount is applied at arrival, not booking, so call the hotel ahead of time to verify they’ll honor it.) Also, when you book on points, the 5th night is always free. We’ve been able to extend many of our vacations by a day because of this perk!  In addition, once you have platinum status, you have access to the lounge, meaning free drinks, snacks, and breakfast during your stay. 

You can also earn Bonvoy points through a co-branded credit card and use those points for everything from budget hotels to luxury resorts. 

Hilton Honors

Hilton Honors covers over 7,000 properties across 22 brands in more than 170 countries. The program offers confirmed connecting rooms (huge for families who need to spread out), mobile check-in to skip lines with impatient kids, and the ability to pool points between family members.

Hilton’s family-friendly brands like Embassy Suites (all-suites, perfect for families) and their all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean make this program especially valuable if you’re planning beach vacations. 

World of Hyatt

World of Hyatt consistently ranks in the top three hotel loyalty programs, and travelers love it for good reason. While Hyatt has fewer properties than Marriott or Hilton, the quality is generally excellent, and the program is incredibly generous with perks.

Hyatt offers some of the best value when you redeem points for hotel stays, and they’re a popular transfer partner for Chase Ultimate Rewards points. If you’re strategic about earning and redeeming, you can score luxury hotel stays at a fraction of the cash price!

How to Actually Maximize These Programs (Without Losing Your Mind)

Okay, so you know which programs are worth joining. Now let’s talk strategy, because just signing up isn’t enough – you need to use these programs intentionally to get real value.

Start with One Flexible Credit Card

The fastest way to rack up enough points for family travel is through credit card sign-up bonuses. Cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred offer substantial welcome bonuses – often 75,000 points or more after you spend a certain amount in the first few months. (I was able to nab a 100k point bonus, so be on the lookout for promotions!)

Here’s why this matters: those 75,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points could cover three nights at a great hotel in a major city, or multiple domestic round-trip flights. That’s not pocket change – that’s a family vacation. You can redeem them 1:1 at hotel and airline transfer partners or on the Chase Travel Portal. They also offer “point boosts” at certain times, so watch for any promotions to get even more bang for your buck.

Use your rewards credit card for everything you’re already buying: groceries, gas, bills, and back-to-school shopping. The points add up quickly, especially if you choose a card that offers bonus earning in categories where your family spends the most.

Focus Your Hotel and Airline Loyalty

Once you’ve got a solid credit card rewards program, pick one airline loyalty program and one hotel loyalty program to focus on. We started with the American Airlines AAdvantage program (we’re near the main hub in DFW) and the Marriott Bonvoy program. This is key – spreading yourself too thin across six different programs means you’ll never earn enough points in any single program to actually redeem for meaningful rewards.

Choose your airline based on which one has the most flights from your home airport. If you live near a Delta hub, Delta SkyMiles makes sense. Near American Airlines? Go with AAdvantage. The goal is to concentrate your earnings so you can actually reach elite status and unlock better perks.

For hotels, if you’re aiming for budget travel, I’d recommend starting with a program like Choice or Hyatt, where you’ll get more bang for your buck. While I love the Marriott program and am very invested in it after 15 years of travel, if I were to start all over, I’d definitely go with Choice or Hyatt. 

Take Advantage of Point Pooling

Several programs allow family members to pool points or miles, which is incredibly useful when you need enough points to book for multiple people. JetBlue and United both allow this for airlines. On the hotel side, Hilton makes pooling super easy with one-to-one transfer ratios.

Some families even set up a strategy where one person’s account becomes the “family bank” – everyone funnels their points there, and that account is used to book family trips. It requires coordination, but it works.

Don’t Ignore Elite Status Benefits

I know, I know – “elite status” sounds pretentious and cringy. But hear me out. Many programs offer their first tier of elite status after just 10-25 nights or flights per year. If your family travels even semi-regularly, you might hit this naturally. And if you have certain travel credit cards, like the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express, they automatically provide you with elite status. 

The perks at even basic elite status levels can make a huge difference in family travel comfort: free checked bags (saving $30-$50 per bag, per person, each way), priority boarding, free upgrades when available, late checkout, and sometimes complimentary breakfast or lounge access. For a family of four taking just three trips a year, those free checked bags alone could save you $1000+ annually.

Book Strategically to Stretch Your Points Further

Not all redemptions are created equal. Sometimes using 50,000 points gets you a $400 hotel stay, while other times it only covers $200 worth of value. Learning to evaluate redemption values helps you maximize what you’ve earned.

Also, be flexible when possible. Traveling during off-peak times often requires fewer points for the same flights or hotel stays. You can often get great deals for “business” hotels on weekends when the demand is lower, while “tourist” hotels often offer lower rates on Sunday-Thursday evenings.

Award availability for families of four can sometimes be challenging during peak seasons, but if you can shift your travel to shoulder season, you’ll find better options and often need fewer points to book.

My Top Tips for Getting Started

If you’re new to this whole world, start simple:

Month One: Sign up for one travel rewards credit card with a good sign-up bonus. Make sure you can comfortably meet the minimum spending requirement. Enroll your entire family in your chosen airline loyalty program and sign one of the grownups up for a hotel loyalty program (or both if they offer family points poolings).

Month Two: Start using that credit card for all purchases you’d normally make anyway. Don’t change your spending habits just to earn points – that defeats the purpose. The goal is to earn rewards on spending you’re already doing. And be sure you pay that credit card off at the end of the month! If you’re accruing interest on that credit card, it totally defeats the purpose of budget rewards travel. 

Month Three: By now, you should have earned your sign-up bonus. Start researching how to redeem those points for your next family trip. If you need more points, see if they offer a referral bonus, and have your partner or spouse sign up and rake in some points, too!

Common Questions I Hear All the Time

“Do points expire?” Most programs require some activity every 12-18 months to keep points from expiring, but this is easy to avoid. Make one purchase with a co-branded credit card, book one flight, or stay one night at a hotel in that loyalty program, and your points stay active.

“Can my kids earn their own points?” Absolutely! Children can have their own frequent flyer accounts and hotel loyalty accounts from birth. They won’t earn points through credit cards until they’re 18, but any flights they take or hotel stays under their name can earn them points.

“What if I don’t have enough points for everyone?” You don’t have to book everything with points. We often use a hybrid approach – book three tickets with miles and pay cash for the other two, or use points for hotels and pay cash for flights. Even covering part of your trip with rewards significantly reduces out-of-pocket costs.

Making It Work for Your Family

But here’s what they absolutely can do: they can make travel that felt financially impossible suddenly realistic. They can upgrade your family’s travel experience without upgrading your budget. Pro tip: Check your pantry before shopping. I have enough thyme in my pantry for the entire neighborhood because I can never remember if I have any at home. The answer is Yes. Yes, I do . Learn from my mistakes and save yourself some money!

Another helpful hack? Shop for non-perishables a week or two early. This spreads out your spending and means you’re not trying to buy everything at once. Save the fresh produce and perishables for 2-3 days before your party.

Sensory Toys and Tactile Items That Work Wonders

Start with items that provide comforting tactile input:

• Weighted lap pad – Absolutely game-changing for long car rides and flights. The gentle pressure can help your child feel grounded and calm when everything else feels chaotic.  I have a 5-pound version for me, as well. It’s my number one travel essential!

• Stress balls (various textures) – Pack both smooth and bumpy varieties. This variety pack checks all the boxes. Some kids crave smooth surfaces while others need more intense tactile input. Large pom poms are some of my favorites because they’re super cheap when you have to replace them, and they won’t hurt anyone when they inevitably get chunked at someone’s head because they’re chewing too loudly. 

• Squishy fidget toys – Mochi squishies are great sensory toys for kids who need something to squeeze and manipulate with their hands and are fun for imagination play, as well. Their low price point makes them great for surprising kids with a new one each day of the trip.

• Smooth stones or textured fabric pieces – For older kids and teens,  a little mesh bag filled with smooth rocks that your kid can shake around or move her fingers through is relaxing. (Please remain vigilant and do not give to young children due to the risk of choking.) For younger kids, fabric touch and feel books, tag security blankets, simple cut pieces of varying fabrics, or bean bags made of differing fabrics are a great addition to the sensory bag.  

• Soft travel blanket – Non-negotiable in our family! Even in summer, having that familiar smell,  weight, and texture within reach provides instant comfort. Choose one that’s small enough not to overwhelm your car space but large enough to provide that cozy feeling. My kids are tweens and teens now, and still bring their favorite travel blanket with them on every trip. 

Managing Sound and Noise

Noise can be a huge trigger during car rides:

• Noise-canceling headphones – Invest in good quality ones! The engine, road noise, siblings talking, or music can quickly lead to sensory overload. We got Apple Airpod Pros to help with my at the time tween daughter’s misophonia, and they’ve been worth every penny. They literally are a lifesaver on

• Earplugs – Perfect option for sound reduction when you don’t want to use the headphones. My daughter prefers these Curvd brand earplugs over the other popular brands. For kids aged 6-12, these Loop Engage earplugs help block unwanted noises without silencing everything around them. And for babies and toddlers, you can find lots of options here. 

 • Soft hat or ear warmers – Sometimes just having something soft covering the ears can help. This cute and cozy fleece headband also doubles as headphones for your kiddo!

• Playlist or audiobooks – Some kids actually need more auditory input, not less. Having their favorite songs or stories downloaded and ready gives you control over the auditory environment.

• White noise machines and apps – Great for kids who need a consistent background sound to feel calm. I love how this white noise machine doubles as a customizable nightlight.

Many kids with sensory challenges need oral input during stress or excitement:

• Chewable jewelry or necklaces – Safe, wearable chewable jewelry options that won’t get lost in the car.

• Chewy toys (various textures) – Pack both smooth and bumpy chewy toy varieties. Some firm, some softer – what works one day might not work the next.

• Thick straws or chew tubes – Great chewy toy alternatives that provide the oral input they’re seeking.

Visual and Focus Tools

Keep hands busy and provide visual input with these essentials:

• Coloring books – A classic for a reason! They provide focused visual input while keeping hands busy. Perfect for both littles, teens, and adults!

• Sticker books – Less messy than crayons and equally engaging. These reusable sticker books are my favorite. 

• Drawing boards – These LCD drawing boards are lightweight, reusable, and mess-free for creative expression.

• Simple fidget toys with visual elements – Toys that light up, change colors, or have interesting visual patterns. These light-up fidget spinners are favorites. 

• Color-specific items – Consider the color of items you’re packing. Some kids are calmed by certain colors, while others might be overstimulated by bright or busy patterns.

Smart Packing Tips for Success

The way you organize your road trip-friendly sensory kit can make or break your trip:

• Keep essentials within reach – Everything your child might need should be accessible from their seat, not buried in a suitcase. I learned this the hard way during a memorable meltdown flying home from Denver.

• Use a dedicated sensory travel bag – This expandable tote bag is perfect! It’s easy to carry and has a large capacity for storing everything you need. It expands open completely and has 15 differnt compartments to keep you organized. Keep it packed and ready to go for spontaneous trips or around town.

• Pack doubles of favorites – If your child has a beloved squishy toy or chew item, pack a backup. Kids lose things, and gas station parking lots are not forgiving.

• Create a small, easy-access car bag – The most critical items should sit right next to your child in a small bag they can reach and open independently.

Some kids need to increase sensory input when they’re overwhelmed – they might need to squeeze a stress ball, chew on something, or put on their weighted lap pad. Others need to decrease stimulation – dim lights, quiet voices, and smooth textures might help them reset.

Practice these calming strategies at home before your trip. The middle of a highway isn’t the time to discover that your child hates the new fidget toy you packed or that the backup chewable item has a texture they can’t tolerate.

Also, pay extra attention to physical needs. Travel means disrupted schedules and environments. Keeping snacks and drinks on hand will help combat the hangry. Allow for extra rest/nap time, too. Sensory-sensitive kiddos need us to help monitor and anticipate their needs before the overwhelm hits.

Let’s be real – sometimes, despite all our preparation, meltdowns happen. And that’s okay! Having sensory needs doesn’t mean your family can’t travel; it just means you travel differently.

When a meltdown occurs, prioritize safety first. Pull over as soon as it’s safe to do so. Don’t try to power through or wait for the next rest stop if your child is in severe distress. 

Once stopped, resist the urge to talk too much or offer too many solutions at once. Sometimes kids need to work through their big feelings before they can accept comfort. Keep sensory items nearby, speak softly, and wait for cues about what might help.

Road Trip Ready: The Magic of Routine and Predictability

One thing that has dramatically improved our road trips is creating predictable routines around travel. For example, pack the sensory kit the night before. Make the same first stop for snacks. For my daughter, that means Starbucks as soon as we get through security at the airport or McDonald’s on a road trip. Listen to the same “travel playlist” for the first thirty minutes. You get the picture.

Predicability can be a great comfort for sensory-sensitive kids. Routines help signal to the nervous system that even though we’re doing something different, some things stay the same. It’s like giving a sensory system a roadmap for what to expect.

I’ve learned that my daughter thrives when she knows what to expect, so to help prepare her, we create visual itineraries together using pictures from the internet. We include photos of hotel rooms, the airplane we’ll fly on, the airplane seating chart, photos of any other transportation we’ll be using, and the attractions we’ll visit. This isn’t just about logistics—it’s about building excitement while reducing anxiety.

Social stories have been game-changers for us. When she was younger, I would create simple narratives about what our travel day would look like: “First, we’ll go through security, then we’ll get a snack, then we’ll wait at our gate, and then we’ll board the plane.” For kids with autism or anxiety, this predictability can mean the difference between a smooth departure and a meltdown before you even leave home.

 If your child needs accommodations during travel or is traveling with an emotional or psychological support animal, get a note from your doctor detailing the accommodations needed.

Weighted lap pads are AMAZING for long flights, car rides, and sleeping in unfamiliar places. I even have one for my anxious, overwhelmed myself. They provide proprioceptive input that helps with self-regulation, and they’re much more portable than full-size weighted blankets. 

Fidgets and More

A compact sensory kit saved us countless times when she was younger. Ours included a fidget cube, silly putty, and a Pop-It. Everything fits in a ziplock bag for easy airport security screening. And on road trips, all my kids loved the Melissa & Doug reusable sticker pad books for lightweight entertainment that doesn’t require screens or sound.

Download movies, games, audiobooks, and calming apps before you travel to help keep your child entertained during long travel days or delays. I always pack extra charging cables and a portable battery pack because nothing derails a careful plan like a dead tablet during a layover. Don’t rely on airplane WiFi or international data plans when your child needs their comfort content.

Medication

Don’t forget the practical stuff either. If your child takes medication, bring extra along, just to be safe. An unexpected overnight travel delay can happen, and you don’t want to find yourself without necessary medications. Also, ask your doctor about the possibility of prescribing “as-needed” medication that could help your child with increased anxiety during travel. 

Transportation Strategies for Traveling With A Neurodivergent Child

Flying with neurodivergent kids requires some advance planning. Most airlines offer accommodations if you request them ahead of time and have a note from your doctor—things like pre-boarding, aisle seats for kids who need to move around, or assistance navigating security. TSA has a program called TSA Cares that provides additional screening assistance for travelers with disabilities. Public transportation can be tricky with sensory sensitivities. The crowded, often hot train cars in the subway were A LOT for my daughter, but we’ve developed strategies. We do our best to avoid rush hour travel time, come prepared with water and snacks for her, use noise-canceling headphones, and always have an early exit plan if things become overwhelming.

Hotel selection matters more than you might think. I look for properties with thicker walls, away from elevators and ice machines. Many hotels will note these preferences in your reservation if you call ahead. When she was young, we immediately set up her space with her comfort items, snacks, and a drink, and planned to stay put for a while, so she could acclimate. 

Maintaining routines while traveling is challenging but crucial. We try to keep meal times consistent to regulate her blood sugar and preserve bedtime rituals even in unfamiliar places. I always pack a white noise machine and a weighted lap blanket because new sleeping environments can be particularly difficult for neurodivergent kids.

Don’t underestimate the power of familiar foods. While trying local cuisine is part of travel’s joy, having backup snacks your child enjoys can prevent hunger-induced meltdowns. I always take her shopping pre-trip to pick out her favorite travel snacks. 

Daily Adventure Management

The key to successful daily adventures when traveling with a neurodivergent child is building flexibility into your plans. We have a non-negotiable scheduled downtime each afternoon between activities. No one is too old for naptime! And I always have a “Plan B” if our original idea becomes overwhelming. We don’t expect to do every activity together, and sometimes it’s best if my husband and I split up the kids and take them to do separate activities. Museums during school hours are usually less crowded than on weekends. Many attractions offer sensory-friendly hours or quiet spaces—research these options in advance.

Timing is everything. My daughter does best with morning activities when her energy and coping skills are fresh. By afternoon, we’re often back at our accommodation for rest time before going out for dinner and whatever we feel up to that evening. This might mean missing some sights, but that’s totally ok with us. It ensures the experiences we do have are positive ones.

Crowds can be the biggest challenge for many neurodivergent kids. We’ve learned to identify escape routes immediately upon arriving anywhere new. Knowing where the nearest bathroom, quiet space, or exit is located gives both my daughter and me peace of mind. Sometimes just knowing we can leave if needed is enough to help us stay.

2. Choose Destinations the Entire Family Will Enjoy

This is where you channel your inner cruise director and find that magical place where your 8-year-old and your 80-year-old can both have a blast. Think beyond the obvious theme parks (though they work, too) and consider destinations with natural wow-factors.

This makes for a perfect balance and offering of activities for every family member. Plus, you’ll also find it more affordable than many other European cities. 

Beach destinations or cruises are absolute winners because they naturally accommodate different energy levels. The kids can build sandcastles and snorkel close to shore while grandparents read under umbrellas, and the adventurous can enjoy some other outdoor excursion, like deep-sea fishing or surf lessons.

If you’re planning an unforgettable winter vacation, a ski trip is perfect for the entire family. Whether you want to hit the slopes all day, enjoy a day of relaxation in the cozy lodge with hot cocoa and a book, or a mixture of both, it’s an ideal trip for multiple generations.

Plus, there’s something magical and cozy about three generations cooking together, even if it’s just cinnamon toast and scrambled eggs for breakfast.

Just make sure to call ahead and explain your situation – hotel staff are usually incredibly helpful when they understand you’re trying to keep a multigenerational group happy.

Here’s where your multigenerational trip planning superpowers really shine. You need to think like a logistics coordinator and a diplomat rolled into one. Research accessibility options at every destination – and I mean really research, not just glance at the website.

Call ahead to attractions and ask specific questions: How long is the walk from the parking?  Is there a shuttle available? Are there benches along the way? Can wheelchairs and strollers navigate the terrain? Most places are happy to provide detailed information when they know it’ll help make your visit successful.

Build buffer time into every activity. If the museum website says it takes two hours to see, plan for three. This gives your slower walkers time to keep up and prevents that stressed feeling when someone needs a bathroom break right when you’re supposed to be at the next attraction. And if you’re finished in an hour, it gives you time to hit up that coffee shop you passed on the way there. 

5. Set a Realistic Budget and Discuss Financial Arrangements

Money conversations are about as fun as root canals, but they’re absolutely necessary. Different generations often have very different financial situations and expectations about vacation spending. Your bougie brother might want to splurge on nice dinners, while your twenty-five-year-old cousin is counting every dollar.

Have an honest family discussion about the multigenerational trip budget before you book anything. Decide upfront who’s covering what – are accommodations, gas, and food split evenly? And my favorite bit of advice is to always schedule in naptime if at all possible. Think your kids are too old for naps? Think again, my friend. Having time for naps during a vacation will save your sanity.

Remember, you’re not running a military operation – you’re creating memories. Some of the best family stories come from the unplanned moments when you had to improvise. That time you all got caught in the rain and ended up playing cards in a random café for three hours? That’ll be the story everyone tells for years.

7. Plan Activities That Encourage Multigenerational Bonding

While togetherness is beautiful, sometimes we all need a break from the whole family during a multigenerationalonal trip. Can I get an amen???

And please don’t expect the grandparents to be babysitters the entire trip. Let them enjoy their downtime, too.
