Why a Capsule Wardrobe Is a Must for Your Trip to Europe in the Summer
Here’s the thing about packing for a European vacation during the summer months – you need pieces that can do double duty. The weather in Europe can range from drizzly, cool days in London to breezy coastal days in Nice to seriously sweltering days in cities like Athens or Barcelona. And you might want to transition from daytime sightseeing to a dressier evening out without changing your entire outfit.
A capsule wardrobe is all about choosing versatile, mix-and-match pieces in a similar color palette. Go for neutral tones like white, black, tan, or navy as your base, then layer in a couple of fun prints to keep things interesting. The goal is to pack fewer items that create more outfit combinations.
In my opinion, the best part of choosing a capsule wardrobe is all the space and potential money you save! No more paying for huge check-in suitcases that you have to lug through train stations. Everything can fit in a simple carry-on! It’s a game-changer for long-distance travel. In fact, I wrote a whole post about how to pack for 10 days in Europe in a carry-on, so make sure you check it out.
Must-Pack Bottoms: Versatile Pants, Skirts, and More
Let’s start from the bottom up (literally). You want bottoms that are lightweight, packable, and work dressed up or down.
One pair of black pants

Black Boot Cut Pants
These are just great staples. A pair of stretchy, high-waisted black travel pants, like this bootcut version, works for everything from overnight flights to dinner. I love this wrinkle-resistant, stretchy fabric that holds its shape for days while still looking fresh.
One pair of wide-leg jeans
Wide Leg Jeans
Wide-leg pants are still having their moment, and they’re perfect for Europe in the summer. They’re airy, chic, and look amazing with a simple tee tucked in. Go for a denim or gray look. I love this high-waisted, structured, wide-leg pair of Levi’s that will go great with sneakers, sandals, flats, or heels.
One maxi skirt

Maxi Skirt
A maxi skirt in a flowy, lightweight fabric adds instant versatility. It can go casual with a t-shirt and sandals or dressy with a nicer top and flats. A solid neutral or subtle stripe or floral print works beautifully. This chiffon, elastic-waisted maxi skirt is perfect for hot days. And bonus, it packs easily, and the pleated design hides wrinkles. And it has pockets!
One pair of linen-blend pants
Linen Pants
If you really want to look like a European, a pair of light colored linen pants is a must. While they do tend to wrinkle more easily than other fabrics, they are the perfect summer material. I prefer the flowy look of these wide-leg linen cotton blend drawstring pants.
Tops That Do the Heavy Lifting: Layering Essentials
Tops are where you get the most versatility in your capsule wardrobe. These are my favorites due to layering possibilities and the ability to dress them up or down.
Tees
Tees
A couple of solid colored tees, and maybe a cute striped one, are essential for your summer outfits for Europe packing list.
Look for lightweight cotton or gauze fabric that breathes well. GAP makes great, affordable options! A loose v-neck, a fitted, pointelle crew neck tee, or a mockneck tank you can tuck into high-waisted pants or a skirt instantly looks polished.
And depending upon the weather at your destination, switch to all tanks or even long-sleeve tees. They’re interchangeable in this capsule wardrobe
One or two breezy blouses
Crocheted vest
Something slightly dressy that elevates your look for evenings out, like this crocheted sleeveless vest. Pair it with a skirt and dressy flats for the theater or with jeans or linen pants for a day of sightseeing.
Cotton Guaze Oversized Top
An oversized cotton guaze top also works – wear it open over a tank top during the day and buttoned up and partially tucked into your black flared pants at night.
One nice camisole
Satin Camisole
A satin camisole in a neutral tone works as a layering piece or on its own when the heat is intense. A satin or other type of elevated fabric makes it dinner-appropriate, too.
The Perfect Dress: From a Maxi Dress to a Playful Midi
If there’s one thing I always pack for a European summer, it’s dresses. A dress is literally an entire outfit in one piece, which means less thinking and more exploring.
One versatile dress that goes day-to-night

If you prefer something shorter, this monochrome square-necked midi dress can easily be dressed up or down, and is available in several neutral colors. And did I mention it has pockets?!
Shoes for Your European Vacation: Sandals, Sneakers, and Flats
Your shoes can make or break your trip to Europe. Those cobblestone streets are no joke, and you’ll walk WAY more than you think.
One pair of walkable sandals
Comfortable Sandals
Supportive sandals with a cushioned footbed will carry you through most of your trip. Pick a pair in a neutral tone that’s cute enough for lunch but can handle miles of walking.
One pair of comfortable sneakers
Comfortable Sneakers
White sneakers are a staple of European summer style – they go with everything and are endlessly wearable. Wear these on your heaviest walking days.
One pair of dressy flats
Dressy, Foldable Flats
For evenings or day dates, metallic or neutral flats elevate any outfit without sacrificing comfort. These pointed-toe ballet flats are trending hard right now and are foldable, meaning they take up almost no room in your suitcase!
Layers and Outerwear: Staple Pieces for Cool Evenings
Even during the summer months, certain parts of Europe are quite cool. We had a 50-degree rainy day in London in June and would have been freezing without our jackets!
One light-weight waterproof jacket
Waterproof Jacket
A lightweight, waterproof jacket or windbreaker with a hood. Something to keep you dry and warm in case of unexpected wind or rain.
One cardigan
Lightweight Shrug Cardigan
A lightweight shrug cardigan is essential for cooler evenings and overly air-conditioned trains if you’re prone to running cold like me. Choose a neutral shade that pairs with everything in your capsule.
Sunglasses and Summer Outfit Accessories
Summer in Europe can mean warm, sunny days, so don’t forget these must-have accessories.

Sunglasses
Oversized Sunglasses
An oversized pair adds instant style to any outfit and protects your eyes from that blazing summer sun. I love this square-shaped Burberry dupe!
A lightweight scarf or sarong
Scarf
Use this lightweight scarf as a shoulder wrap, a beach cover-up, or even a hair accessory. It takes up little luggage space and adds so much versatility.
A crossbody bag or tote
Crossbody Purse
Keep your hands free and belongings secure with this darling crescent crossbody. It’s perfect for a day of sightseeing, as it’s large enough for your phone, wallet and a small water bottle without adding too much bulk. It’s available in multiple colors and patterened straps.
s or bring a packable tote for beach days and market shopping.
Packable Tote
Bring a packable tote for beach days and market shopping. When folded, this heavy dute tote is about the same size as the palm of your hand. Stow it in your crossbody bag so you have it on hand when you need it!
Lightweight, Wrinkle-Resistant Fabrics: Packing Smart Summer Outfits for Europe Travel
The fabrics you choose make a huge difference when packing for a trip abroad. Prioritize lightweight, breathable, wrinkle-resistant materials that look great even after hours rolled up in your suitcase. While I tend to avoid polyester most of the time, there’s no doubt that it is more wrinkle-resistant than cotton. If you don’t want to spend your mornings ironing your clothes, look for cotton blends with polyester. If you prefer more natural, look for rayon, jersey or nylon.
Linen is a classic for European summer outfits – it’s breathable, breezy, and gets softer with every wear. Yes, it will be wrinkled in your luggage, but honestly? It’s going to be wrinkled halfway through the day. Cotton gauze is another fantastic option that’s soft, airy and comfortable on hot days, and it hides wrinkles well. I have a pair of cotton guaze shorts and they are my favorite!
Summer Outfits for Europe Travel: Mix and Match Your Capsule
Now that you have your pieces, it’s time to mix and match to create styles for whatever activity you have planned. I’ve created a few ideas for you, but these aren’t the only options. The plethora of options is the beauty of a capsule wardrobe!
Final Packing List Tips for Your Summer Outfits for Europe Travel
Before you zip up that suitcase, a few reminders. Stick to two to three neutral shades so everything coordinates. Roll your clothes instead of folding. Wear your bulkiest items (sneakers, jacket) on the plane. And resist the urge to throw in “just in case” pieces – if you haven’t planned a specific outfit for it, it stays home. We all know it’s almost impossible to resist buying a gorgeous outfit in Europe, so save some packing space for that.
Happy packing and take lots of photos of your European adventures!
