The fabrics you choose make a huge difference when packing for a trip abroad. Prioritize lightweight, breathable, wrinkle-resistant materials that look great even after hours rolled up in your suitcase. While I tend to avoid polyester most of the time, there’s no doubt that it is more wrinkle-resistant than cotton. If you don’t want to spend your mornings ironing your clothes,  look for cotton blends with polyester. If you prefer more natural, look for rayon, jersey or nylon.

Linen is a classic for  European summer outfits – it’s breathable, breezy, and gets softer with every wear. Yes, it will be wrinkled in your luggage, but honestly? But here’s the thing – with some intentional planning and a well-stocked sensory kit, road trips can actually be fun. My daughter has significant sensory needs, and after years of trial and error (and yes, a few a lot of epic meltdowns along the way), I think I’m finally catching on to some life savers for sensory-friendly travel.

Today, I’m sharing some tips I’ve learned so far and all the essentials to create a road trip-friendly sensory kit so you can bypass some of the stress and instead enjoy that true crime podcast on your AirPods while you cruise the open roads.

Before we dive into packing tips, let’s talk about why family road trips can be particularly challenging for kids with sensory issues. And if you’re a highly sensitive parent, it can be incredibly challenging for you, too! The confined space, constant motion, engine noise, changing scenery, and inability to move freely can create the perfect storm for sensory overload in even a non-sensory sensitive child. Add in excitement, anxiety about the destination, lack of sleep, or disrupted routines, and it’s no wonder our sensitive kids majorly struggle on long car rides.

The KEY is recognizing that what others might deem “bad behavior” is often your child’s nervous system trying to cope with too much stimulation and alerting you to your child’s needs. Once I understood this about my daughter, everything changed. Instead of feeling frustrated, impatient, and full of dread, I started approaching our travels with empathy and preparation.

Creating the Ultimate Road Trip-Friendly Sensory Kit

Your sensory kit is going to be your secret weapon. Think of it as a portable calm-down corner that travels with you. I keep ours in a dedicated backpack that stays packed and ready to go – because let’s be honest, sometimes those spontaneous ice cream runs turn into longer adventures!

Sensory Toys and Tactile Items That Work Wonders

Start with items that provide comforting tactile input:

• Weighted lap pad – Absolutely game-changing for long car rides and flights. The gentle pressure can help your child feel grounded and calm when everything else feels chaotic.  I have a 5-pound version for me, as well. It’s my number one travel essential!

• Stress balls (various textures) – Pack both smooth and bumpy varieties. This variety pack checks all the boxes. Some kids crave smooth surfaces while others need more intense tactile input. Large pom poms are some of my favorites because they’re super cheap when you have to replace them, and they won’t hurt anyone when they inevitably get chunked at someone’s head because they’re chewing too loudly. 

• Squishy fidget toys – Mochi squishies are great sensory toys for kids who need something to squeeze and manipulate with their hands and are fun for imagination play, as well. Their low price point makes them great for surprising kids with a new one each day of the trip.

• Smooth stones or textured fabric pieces – For older kids and teens,  a little mesh bag filled with smooth rocks that your kid can shake around or move her fingers through is relaxing. (Please remain vigilant and do not give to young children due to the risk of choking.) For younger kids, fabric touch and feel books, tag security blankets, simple cut pieces of varying fabrics, or bean bags made of differing fabrics are a great addition to the sensory bag.  

• Soft travel blanket – Non-negotiable in our family! Even in summer, having that familiar smell,  weight, and texture within reach provides instant comfort. Choose one that’s small enough not to overwhelm your car space but large enough to provide that cozy feeling. My kids are tweens and teens now, and still bring their favorite travel blanket with them on every trip. 

Managing Sound and Noise

Noise can be a huge trigger during car rides:

• Noise-canceling headphones – Invest in good quality ones! The engine, road noise, siblings talking, or music can quickly lead to sensory overload. We got Apple Airpod Pros to help with my at the time tween daughter’s misophonia, and they’ve been worth every penny. They literally are a lifesaver on

• Earplugs – Perfect option for sound reduction when you don’t want to use the headphones. My daughter prefers these Curvd brand earplugs over the other popular brands. For kids aged 6-12, these Loop Engage earplugs help block unwanted noises without silencing everything around them. And for babies and toddlers, you can find lots of options here. 

 • Soft hat or ear warmers – Sometimes just having something soft covering the ears can help. This cute and cozy fleece headband also doubles as headphones for your kiddo!

• Playlist or audiobooks – Some kids actually need more auditory input, not less. Having their favorite songs or stories downloaded and ready gives you control over the auditory environment.

• White noise machines and apps – Great for kids who need a consistent background sound to feel calm. I love how this white noise machine doubles as a customizable nightlight.

Many kids with sensory challenges need oral input during stress or excitement:

• Chewable jewelry or necklaces – Safe, wearable chewable jewelry options that won’t get lost in the car.

• Chewy toys (various textures) – Pack both smooth and bumpy chewy toy varieties. Some firm, some softer – what works one day might not work the next.

• Thick straws or chew tubes – Great chewy toy alternatives that provide the oral input they’re seeking.

Visual and Focus Tools

Keep hands busy and provide visual input with these essentials:

• Coloring books – A classic for a reason! They provide focused visual input while keeping hands busy. Perfect for both littles, teens, and adults!

• Sticker books – Less messy than crayons and equally engaging. These reusable sticker books are my favorite. 

• Drawing boards – These LCD drawing boards are lightweight, reusable, and mess-free for creative expression.

• Simple fidget toys with visual elements – Toys that light up, change colors, or have interesting visual patterns. These light-up fidget spinners are favorites. 

• Color-specific items – Consider the color of items you’re packing. Some kids are calmed by certain colors, while others might be overstimulated by bright or busy patterns.

Smart Packing Tips for Success

The way you organize your road trip-friendly sensory kit can make or break your trip:

• Keep essentials within reach – Everything your child might need should be accessible from their seat, not buried in a suitcase. I learned this the hard way during a memorable meltdown flying home from Denver.

• Use a dedicated sensory travel bag – This expandable tote bag is perfect! It’s easy to carry and has a large capacity for storing everything you need. Some kids need to increase sensory input when they’re overwhelmed – they might need to squeeze a stress ball, chew on something, or put on their weighted lap pad. Others need to decrease stimulation – dim lights, quiet voices, and smooth textures might help them reset.

Practice these calming strategies at home before your trip. The middle of a highway isn’t the time to discover that your child hates the new fidget toy you packed or that the backup chewable item has a texture they can’t tolerate.

Also, pay extra attention to physical needs. Travel means disrupted schedules and environments. Keeping snacks and drinks on hand will help combat the hangry. Allow for extra rest/nap time, too. Sensory-sensitive kiddos need us to help monitor and anticipate their needs before the overwhelm hits. 

Managing Meltdowns on the Road

Let’s be real – sometimes, despite all our preparation, meltdowns happen. And that’s okay! Having sensory needs doesn’t mean your family can’t travel; it just means you travel differently.

When a meltdown occurs, prioritize safety first. Pull over as soon as it’s safe to do so. Don’t try to power through or wait for the next rest stop if your child is in severe distress. 

Once stopped, resist the urge to talk too much or offer too many solutions at once. Sometimes kids need to work through their big feelings before they can accept comfort. Keep sensory items nearby, speak softly, and wait for cues about what might help.

Road Trip Ready: The Magic of Routine and Predictability

One thing that has dramatically improved our road trips is creating predictable routines around travel. For example, pack the sensory kit the night before. Make the same first stop for snacks. For my daughter, that means Starbucks as soon as we get through security at the airport or McDonald’s on a road trip. Listen to the same “travel playlist” for the first thirty minutes. You get the picture.

Predicability can be a great comfort for sensory-sensitive kids. Routines help signal to the nervous system that even though we’re doing something different, some things stay the same. It’s like giving a sensory system a roadmap for what to expect.

By some miracle, I didn’t totally lose my sh%$, AND the sweetest flight attendant took mercy on me by bringing me a complimentary bottle of wine and free snacks for the girls. And while the online description doesn’t say “packable”, it’s very easy to compress in your luggage and comes out still looking great!

Packable snow pants

We all know winter clothing is bulky, but you can pack light with these compressible water-resistant ski pants that include their own travel bag. These will work for men or women and are just what you need to keep you dry during a day playing in the snow.

Ski bibs

Instead of ski pants, you might opt for these ski bibs that provide full body protection. You won’t have any snow sliding down the back of your pants in these overall-style bibs. The shoulder straps are adjustable to your height, so they even work for tall girls like me. 

Fleece leggings

I don’t travel anywhere without a pair of leggings and these fleece leggings are at the top of my packing list for cold weather! That inner fleece layer keeps my legs extra warm in chilly temps and make a great base layer for under ski bibs. This pair has over 23k 5-star ratings for a reason! I’d suggest having at least 2 pairs of these for your winter wardrobe. 

Heated vests

If you’ll be spending extended amounts of time outdoors in the cold, you might consider a heated vest. It includes an advanced battery pack for fast charging. It’s ideal for winter camping, hunting, cycling, etc. If you are extra sensitive to the cold like me, this is a lifesaver!

Leg gaiters

 There’s warm socks and then there’s merino wool socks. These 70% merino wool socks are moisture-wicking and provide incredible warmth to keep your feet toasty and dry. Plus they’re uber cute and available in several colors and and prints. 

Sheepskin fleece insoles

If you don’t want to spring for a new pair of winter boots, add warmth to existing boots with these sheepskin fleece insoles. They’ll keep your feet warm and cozy, no matter what shoe you’re wearing. 

Knit polar fleece beanie

This stylish beanie is knit on the outside and polar fleece on the inside, keeping your head extra warm. Its unisex design is perfect for anyone. And it’s machine washable, making it easy to care for. 

Ear warmers headbands

These knitted/fleece ear warmer headbands are a great alternative to a beanie if you prefer to wear your hair in a ponytail or bun. The wool/acrylic blend is soft, warm and stretchy. And they’re really cute! bring a pair of these for the perfect winter accessory.

Wind-chapped skin can ruin cold-weather travel. Cracked bleeding lips or painful chapped cheeks are miserable. This winter skin protector is a lifesaver and has to be on your winter travel checklist. It also includes an SPF, so you’re protecting your skin against sunburn, windburn, and chapping, and is sweat and water-resistant. If you’re looking for one product that can do it all in the cold winds, this is it!

Lip ointment

If you prefer a protectant that is specific for lips and easy to apply, this is my all-time favorite. I have several tubes around my house and always keep one in my purse. It’s taken my daughter’s cracked and bleeding lips and healed them in a couple of days. It really is the best ointment for healing chapped lips and the winter travel essentials I absolutely can’t do without!

Prevent those clingy winter clothes with a little bottle of static spray. You’ll be smelling fresh, too.

Moisturizing hand sanitizer

A germ killer that doesn’t suck all the moisture out of your hands? This is the one. The shea butter in this antibacterial gel will nourish your dry hands while killing 99.99% of germs. And with this 6-pack of travel-size bottles, there’s plenty for the whole family. 

Emergen-C

Hydration mix

If you find yourself in a winter emergency situation, having a mylar thermal blanket will help retain 90% of your body heat. Keep some in your car in case of travel during blizzard conditions, as well as a set in your house in case you find yourself without power for an extended time period. 

Thermal phone case

Help protect your phone battery for days out in the elements. These thermal pouches keep your phone warm and help extend the life of your battery. They’re also snowproof and water-resistant. 

Portable charger

Did you know that cold weather will drain your phone battery more rapidly? It’s true! Don’t get caught out with the dead phone. These are my favorite battery chargers: this fast charger can charge your phone 4-5 times before it needs to be recharged. 

Compression packing cubes

Winter gear is much bulkier than summer gear. To pack light for winter travel, you have to use compression packing cubes to make the most of your luggage space. This set will give you a  60% reduction when compressed! They’re a dream for stowing away those puffy vests, scarves, and sweaters. 

Waterproof bags

Waterproof bags aren’t just for summer travel. Keep your wet gloves, socks, and outwear from getting the rest of your luggage wet with these handy little waterproof bags. You can roll them up and toss them in a backpack or purse. If you have messy kids, they’re a must-have!

Quick-dry towels

These quick-dry microfiber travel towels are great for wiping down wet winter sports gear or cleaning up spills on the go. 

Collapsible shovel

I live in Texas, so it’s not often I need an ice scraper, but every time I do, mine is nowhere to be found. In addition to your main suitcase, a personal item is key to packing light. Even if you don’t need the extra space on the way over, you might want some extra room for those European souvenirs you’re bringing back. 

When I traveled to Europe my personal item bag was necessary for holding my travel documents, electronics, a change or two of clothes, toiletries, and anything else I needed to access quickly. Most airlines have a size limit of 18x14x8 inches and require that they fit under the seat in front of you. 

These personal item backpacks with multiple pockets can help keep you organized and distribute weight evenly, making it easier on your shoulders and back during long travel days. You can also opt for a personal item duffel bag or rolling bag that will fit under the seat in front of you.

Use Packing Cubes

Compression packing cubes are a traveler’s best friend. These handy organizers compartmentalize your suitcase, making it easier to find what you need without unpacking everything. They also help compress your clothes, so you can fit more into your carry-on. Assign different cubes for tops, bottoms, undergarments, and accessories to keep everything neat and accessible.

Wear Your Bulkiest Items

To save space in your carry-on, wear your bulky items on the plane. This includes your heaviest shoes, jacket, and any layers you might need. Not only does this free up space, but it also keeps you cozy during the flight.

Utilize Every Inch

Maximize every nook and cranny of your suitcase. Stuff socks, underwear, and small accessories into your shoes to utilize the space efficiently. Place heavier items at the bottom of your suitcase, near the wheels, to maintain balance and make it easier to maneuver.

Lightweight, quick-drying fabrics are ideal for travel as they can be washed and dried overnight. I’ve even had to wash dirty jeans in the hotel sink and they only took a day to dry. 

If you’re traveling with your family, plan to wash a load of laundry. Most hotels and Airbnbs have access to laundry service.

So, I’ve actually had this backpack for years. I used it as my school backpack when I was teaching.  It is now my go-to, bag for practically every trip. I’ve stowed it under many an airplane seat. It is durable, roomy, and stylish (and my husband will willingly carry this one around!)

It measures 18.1 x 12.6 x 7.8 inches, which is technically over the size limit, but if not bulging with hard items, it can be squished into the bag checker.  It has a laptop sleeve and can hold a 17″ laptop. It has a secret anti-theft pocket, plus two side pockets and a front pocket. The inside of the bag is super spacious and has two smaller compartments, as well.

How to Pack in Only an 18x14x8 Backpack

If you’re looking at these bags and wondering, “How on earth am I going to fit everything?!” you’re not alone. I wondered the same thing the first time I attempted this! I was notorious for over-packing and lugging around giant suitcases with me everywhere.

Then, I learned how to pack for 10 days in Europe in only a carry-on when I had no other option. After that, I realized what I can get by without and how to streamline my packing list. And now I can easily pack for 3-5 days in a personal item bag. I’ll be putting it to the test this summer when we head to North Carolina for a 7 night trip with only our 18x14x8 backpacks!

As far as safety features go, it includes a 5-point harness, an easy pedal brake, a wrist strap, and a peek-a-boo mesh canopy so you can easily check on your child when out and about. This stroller is comparable to more expensive models and is a no-brainer buy, in my opinion!

Safety should never take a backseat, especially when traveling. But I refused to haul our bulky, very heavy convertible car seat around the airport and into Uber rides when flying with my toddlers. A portable travel car seat is essential for easy travel. And there are some affordable options that you’ll feel good about,

This car seat will work for your child from 5 lbs up to 40 lbs, making it an ideal car seat for both babies needing rear-facing and growing toddlers and preschoolers ready for forward-facing. The 5-point harness and 4-position shoulder harness keep your little one safe and secure.

This seat weighs only 9 pounds and is one of the lightest car seats on the market, making it a travel winner. It’s also compact, making it ideal when you need to fit multiple car seats in the back.  As for other winning features, It includes a removable cup holder, plus easy-to-clean fabric that is removable and machine washable.

It’s not the most cushy car seat on the market, but for the price, safety features, size, and weight, it’s a winning travel car seat that’s perfect for once-in-a-while use.

Favorite Car Seat and Booster Seat Combo: Safety 1st Grand 2-in-1 Booster Car Seat

This narrow, lightweight car seat is less than 11 pounds and will fit three across in most vehicles. If you’ll be carrying car seats around the airport or squeezing kiddos in the backseat of a rental car, then you’ll love the compact size. It’s also perfect for sending with grandparents or babysitters.

The five-point harness provides safety for kids as small as 30 pounds and then transitions to a booster seat for kids up to  65 pounds. This car seat is not ideal if your toddler is on the small size, but is perfect for growing toddlers and preschoolers. 

Favorite Packable Booster Seat: BubbleBum Inflatable Booster Seat

Once my daughter was 4 years old and able to sit in a backless booster, this became our go-to travel booster seat. We could toss it in a duffle bag or backpack and not worry about lugging a big booster seat around. Score! It’s also a lifesaver for school carpools or weekends with grandparents. 

It’s simple to inflate and deflate and will stay inflated for hours with a child sitting on it. We didn’t have any issues with it deflating on our hours-long drive. It has a seat belt clip to position the seatbelt correctly across her chest and shoulder. The foam padding makes it a comfy seat for extended travel. 

It’s designed for kiddos 40-100 pounds. We didn’t use it until our kids were mature enough to keep their shoulder belts in place, which for us was when they were in Pre-K (ages 4-5). I wouldn’t recommend this for anyone younger than 4 years old, even if they are 40+ pounds. 

And did I mention this car seat is less than $40? It’s definitely a budget travel winner.

The Pamo babe travel crib is a lightweight sleep system for toddlers. If you’re looking for a travel crib that’s lighter and less bulky than a traditional playpen, you’ll love this option. It only weighs 12 pounds and when folded, it can easily fit in a 28″ suitcase. And it’s quick and simple to put it up and take it down. 

The weight limit is lower than a playpen. It’s designed for infants and toddlers up to 33 pounds. The deep sides keep your little ones from escaping. It includes a (thin) mattress and mattress cover. It’s definitely not the comfort level of a regular crib, but so many users love it and said their babies slept fine on it.

This inflatable travel bed holds up to 310 pounds and the vinyl is 40% thicker than traditional air mattresses, so it’s much less likely to get punctured when they’re wrestling or jumping in their boots. You can use any regular crib sheets on this mattress, which saves some money.

It’s made of breathable fabric and includes 4 adjustable ventilation panels, plus two compartments to add the mini fan that is sold separately. 

This portable blackout tent is easy to assemble with its pop-up tent design. When folded it easily fits in a carry-on bag and it weighs only 5.7 pounds. It’s a great addition to your other travel beds if light is an issue for your kiddo. I would have loved this for my middle child when she was tiny, as any bit of light kept her awake, making it a challenge in hotel rooms when we weren’t quite ready to go to bed. Toddlers are notorious for spills and accidents, so extra sets of clothes are essential. Pack lightweight, easy-to-clean items. Avoid those white cotton shirts and opt for darker colors. 

Comfort Items

Don’t forget your child’s favorite blanket, stuffed animal, or pacifier. And bring back-ups! We lost my 20-month-old daughter’s favorite little toy at the airport before boarding, and you can imagine how the flight went after that. Bless the flight attendant who delivered that bottle of wine to my seat.

Health and Hygiene

With toddlers (and older kids) it’s important to be prepared when messes or accidents strike!

First Aid Kit

A travel-sized first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and fever reducers allows you to quickly address any minor emergencies. You don’t want to be running for the drug store at 2 in the morning when fever strikes. 

Baby Toiletries

Pack travel-sized baby shampoo, lotion, diaper rash cream, plenty of diapers, wipes, and a waterproof changing pad. If I’m short on luggage space and traveling somewhere with access to diaper supplies, I’ll just pack a few for the travel day and purchase a package of diapers and wipes when we arrive. 

Hand Sanitizer and Wet Wipes

Keep those nasty germs at bay with hand sanitizer and use wet wipes for quick cleanups on-the-go. I love keeping a travel pack of disinfecting wipes on hand for wiping down my airplane seat and airplane tray table. The past two times we’ve flown, they had huge delays and didn’t have time to clean the plane before we boarded. Gross!

If you’ve ever booked a flight on a low-cost carrier like Spirit or Frontier Airlines, then you probably know that those cheap flights are only cheap if you don’t bring any extra baggage. Those carry-on bags and checked bags are going to cost you a pretty penny. If you’re like us and traveling with a family of 5, saving those $60 bag fees BOTH WAYS is a big deal.

When I booked my first Spirit Airlines Flight to Orlando this past year, I was excited to fly for less than $100! But once I got to checking out online, I was shocked at how much the cost would increase if I brought a carry-on bag.

I really wasn’t to spend the money on a bag to sit in an overhead bin, so I decided to do some research and see if I would be able to pack my luggage for a 3-day trip in an 18 x 14 x 8-inch personal item bag. (Note: My husband was traveling ahead of me and able to take a few things with him, like my formal wear, that I didn’t want to risk rolling up and cramming in my little bag.)

Now, if you’re traveling for a longer trip, I’m not sure that you can manage just a personal item bag, but if you’re like one of my kids who prefers to wear the same outfit 3 days in a row, you might have success! But if you’re flying out for 2 or 3 nights, then packing a personal item bag is definitely doable. I’m excited to share my personal item bag packing guide, so you can carry your luggage for free and save money on your next Frontier or Spirit Airlines flight.

You could also purchase travel-size toiletry items, like deodorant, dry shampoo, and sunscreen, when you reach your destination and save some packing space. Just know that you might be leaving behind anything that doesn’t fit in your bag on the way home, so purchase accordingly.

Here are a few things that I always bring with me from home:

• Makeup (just the basics)

• Razor

• Medicated face products

• Hand sanitizer (airports are gross)

• Flat iron ( I know it’s not a toiletry item, but it belongs in the bathroom)
