Essential Packing List for Your Fall Travel Capsule Wardrobe
Before we jump into specific outfit ideas, let’s break down the key pieces that’ll form the backbone of your fall travel wardrobe:
LAYERING BASICS
These tops and jackets will be all you need to pull off multiple outfits for casual to dressy occasions.
Long-Sleeve Tees
Two or three soft, long-sleeve tees (or short sleeves if the weather will be warm-ish)- Choose one in white and then one or two others that fit your wardrobe color palette.
I love these ribbed, fitted crewneck tees, which are an instant upgrade to your everyday long-sleeve tee.
Oversized Sweater
A chunky, oversized sweater can be worn over leggings or tucked into jeans or a skirt.
I love the batwing sleeves and detailing on this casual oversized sweater. It feels high-quality at a really affordable price point. Plus, it’s available in 30 different color options, so there’s something for everyone.
Denim Jacket
Whether you prefer a classic style or an oversized look, denim jackets are hot this fall and the perfect layering companion for those cool fall days.
This jean jacket is oversized with this season’s super popular quilted trend, making it a show-stopper of a jacket that looks great with just about anything.
Packable Waterproof Windbreaker
Fall weather is unpredictable, so be prepared with a waterproof rain jacket for those outdoor adventures.
I love that this option includes a small waterproof bag for packing your rain jacket. The longer length keeps your clothing drier, and the drawstring waist adds nice detailing and fit, so you don’t feel like you’re wearing a bag.
VERSATILE BOTTOMS
From casual to dressy, these three bottoms are all you need.
Dark Wash Jeans
It’s time to give those dark-wash jeans their place in the limelight again. Light rinse is fun and all, but the versatility of dark jeans means you can go from day to evening without changing your pants.
I love this classic pair of high-waisted mom jeans from Levi’s. They’re loose enough to be comfortable while also having enough structure to look dressy with a pair of flats and a sweater. ELLE Magazine claims they’re the jeans that everyone needs because they never go out of style. Sounds like a good investment to me.
Comfy Leggings
Need I say more? Everyone needs a solid pair of black leggings in their closet, even if you have plans to head to the gym.
This high-waisted pair with pockets will always be in my suitcase, no matter the season.
Leather Skirt
A leather skirt in black or brown will never steer you wrong. This timeless piece is a must-have for a capsule wardrobe for fall or winter.
This vegan leather option is affordable and is longer than your typical mini-skirt. The slit in the back allows for movement, and the high-waisted slim fit is super flattering.
COMFORTABLE FOOTWEAR
If there’s one thing you want to get right on a trip, it’s footwear. Keep those feet comfortable and ready for all occasions with these three favorite pairs.
Hiking Boots
Fall weather can turn out to be wet and cold, so having some waterproof hiking boots for outdoor activities is a must.
While lots of hiking boots are low in the looks category, this waterproof pair provides style, comfort, and function, with buyers raving about how well they kept their feet dry.
Leather Sneakers
Not only should your sneakers be uber comfy and supportive, but a pair of leather sneakers will keep your feet dry. Plus, they’re easy to wipe off when they get dirty. Ditch the canvas when you’re traveling and invest in a quality pair of leather sneakers that you can wear for years.
This pair of leather Veja Esplar sneakers is a timeless classic. The cushioned footbed will keep your feet comfortable all day. These are available in several different colors/styles, but I love the simplicity of this option. I also love Veja’s commitment to ethical production. And with so many different sneaker styles, you’re sure to find one you love.
Comfy Flats
Flats are big this year. And their small size makes them a perfect accompaniment to your capsule wardrobe. They pair perfectly with a skirt or jeans and are much more comfortable and packing-friendly than a pair of heels.
I love the flattering pointed-toe and two-toned look of this pair of flats. The memory foam sole makes them comfortable to wear for hours. And the knit is quite breathable. These will instantly take your style factor up a notch.
ACCESSORIZE
Just a couple of accessories will transform your outfit. I don’t take many accessories when I’m traveling, but in the cooler months, I opt for a warm scarf and a pair of statement earrings I can wear with almost any outfit.
Statement Earrings
Statement earrings are the perfect way to elevate any fall travel outfit from basic to bold. These eye-catching accessories can transform a simple sweater and jeans combo into a head-turning ensemble, adding a pop of personality and style without taking up precious luggage space.
I love this black and white set for this capsule wardrobe. Sure, I could go with silver or gold, but the boldness and color contrast on this pair really add a punch to each outfit.
Cozy Scarf
A cozy scarf is the ultimate multitasker in your fall travel wardrobe, serving as both a stylish accessory and an extra layer of warmth. Whether draped around your neck, wrapped snugly for chilly mornings, or even used as an impromptu blanket during long flights, a scarf is an absolute must-have for any autumn trip.
If I had to choose one scarf that would work for virtually any outfit in my closet, it’s this one. The soft beige color pairs perfectly with practically anything. And this one is oh so soft and cozy!
OPTIONAL EXTRAS
While your capsule wardrobe covers the essentials, consider tossing in these optional extras.
- A sling bag
- Sunglasses
- Hat or beanie
- Compact Umbrella
With these essentials in your suitcase, you’ll be ready to create a variety of fall travel outfits for women, no matter where your adventures take you.
