Hey there, fellow travelers!
If you’re a frequent traveler, chances are you’ve come across a budget airline at some point. These low-cost carriers, also known as discount airlines or ultra-low-cost carriers, have become increasingly popular in recent years. But let’s face it, flying with them can be a bit of a headache. From their complicated business model to the never-ending list of extra fees, it’s not always smooth sailing.
Luckily for you, we’re here to help! I’m actually quite a fan of low-cost carriers and their cheap flights, although I was scared to use them for years! In this ultimate guide, we’ll share all the tips and tricks we’ve learned that you need to survive and thrive when flying with low-cost airlines like Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines. So buckle up and get ready for a budget-friendly adventure!
Why are low-cost airlines both loved and hated?
Ah, low-cost airlines – the eternal love-hate relationship of frequent travelers. On one hand, they offer unbeatable deals and the promise of exploring more destinations without emptying your wallet. But on the other hand, they can be a real pain in the neck with their add-on fees and delays. So, what’s the deal with these budget carriers?
Well, for starters, low-cost airlines have revolutionized the way we travel by making airfare more accessible to a wider range of people. They’ve opened up a whole new world of possibilities for those who couldn’t afford to fly before. Plus, their aggressive pricing strategy and lower operating cost structure keep the competition on their toes, ultimately benefiting consumers.
However, with decreased ticket prices come sacrifices. These airlines often cut corners in various aspects to keep their costs down. Think cramped legroom, minimal in-flight services, and an array of additional fees. And let’s not forget about those infamous delays and cancellations that can wreak havoc on your travel plans. (*Note: this does not mean they cut safety corners! These low-cost carriers are just as safe as other airlines.)
But for many budget-conscious travelers, the pros outweigh the cons. With a little bit of planning and a few tricks up your sleeve, you can navigate the world of low-cost airlines like a pro. That’s exactly what we’re here to help you within this ultimate guide – to make sure your experience with these carriers is more love than hate. So let’s dive into the nitty-gritty and discover the tips and tricks that will make your next low-cost airline adventure a breeze!
Tips and tricks to score the cheapest tickets
Now that we’ve established the pros and cons of low-cost airlines, it’s time to get down to business and find out how to snag the cheapest tickets possible. After all, the whole point of flying with a budget carrier is to save money, right? Well, don’t worry, because we’ve got you covered.
Tip #1: Be Flexible
Flexibility with your travel dates is a must. Low-cost airlines often have fluctuating prices depending on the day of the week and time of year. By being open to different departure and return dates, you increase your chances of finding an incredible deal. We scored $38 round-trip flights from Dallas to San Diego by being flexible. It’s worth it!
Tip #2: Set Up Fare Alerts
Set up fare alerts. Many travel websites and apps allow you to set up notifications for specific routes and prices. This way, you’ll be instantly informed when there’s a drop in fares, giving you the opportunity to pounce on the best deals. I love setting up Google alerts and using the Hopper App.
Tip #3: Pack Light
Pack smart by packing light. Low-cost airlines usually charge extra for checked baggage. To avoid these fees, try to pack everything you need in a personal item bag. Opt for versatile clothing items that you can mix and match, and make use of packing cubes to maximize space.
With these tips in your arsenal, you’ll be well-equipped to find the cheapest tickets available. So, don’t let the price tag stop you from exploring new destinations – embrace the world of low-cost airlines and start planning your next adventure!
Packing light – the ultimate survival skill
Now let’s talk a little more about one of the most important survival skills when flying with low-cost airlines – packing light. We all know that these airlines charge extra for checked bags and carry-on bags, so it’s vital to pack strategically to avoid those pesky fees.
When it comes to packing light, there are a few key principles to keep in mind. First, focus on essentials only. Leave behind items that you can easily purchase at your destination or can do without. This will not only save you money on baggage fees but also make your journey much more hassle-free.
Next, invest in a good personal item bag that meets the size and weight requirements of the airline. For budget airlines, like Spirit or Frontier, you’ll need a bag that measures 18x14x8 inches. This will ensure that you can bring your bag on board without any issues, and avoid any additional charges.
Lastly, consider packing versatile clothing items that you can mix and match to create different outfits. This will allow you to pack fewer items while still having options for different occasions. Additionally, make use of packing cubes or compression bags to maximize space and keep your belongings organized.

By mastering the art of packing light, you’ll not only save money but also have more freedom and flexibility in your travels. So, remember to pack smart and enjoy the benefits of traveling light with low-cost airlines. Stay tuned for more tips and tricks on how to survive and thrive when flying on a budget!
Seat Selection- To choose or not to choose
One thing to know when booking your tickets is that choosing your seat comes with an extra cost. Even those seats at the back of the plane are going to cost you. The only way to get a free seat is to let the system choose for you. I’ve lucked out a couple of times and gotten a window or aisle seat. And if you’re traveling with a child under 13 years old, the airlines will do their best to seat you with your child. We had no problems with this when we flew with our kids on Frontier and even received our seating assignments days before our flight.
If you’re ok with sitting anywhere, this won’t be a big deal to you. If those airplane seats are restricting for your size, you might consider a seat selection beforehand if you are on a packed flight. Otherwise, you can wait and upgrade at the gate or even on the plane. If you have accommodating flight attendants, they may take mercy on you and allow you to move for free.
One way that low-cost airlines keep their lower fares is by having a coach-only fleet. While you won’t find any business class or even first-class cabin on low-cost carriers, you can still find more comfortable seating, such as Spirit’s Big Front Seat or the Allegiant Extra on Allegiant Air. Depending upon your initial ticket cost, it might be worth the upgrade if it’s in your budget.
Surviving the onboard experience: Bring your own entertainment
You may or may not know that, unlike most full-service airlines, budget airlines rarely offer complimentary in-flight entertainment, so it’s essential to come prepared.
One of the easiest ways to keep yourself entertained during the flight is to bring your own entertainment options. Load up your tablet or e-reader with your favorite books, magazines, movies, or TV shows. Download your favorite podcasts or audiobooks to keep you engaged during the journey.
If you’re not a fan of screens, consider bringing a good old-fashioned paperback book, coloring book, or a travel journal to jot down your thoughts and experiences. Bringing card games or travel board games is also a great way to pass the time, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Just remember, you’ll have to fit it in your personal item bag if you’re trying to avoid the cost of a carry-on bag.
Also, remember to bring a good pair of noise-canceling headphones to block out any unwanted noise. And I want to emphasize that you should pack a portable charger or power bank to ensure your devices stay juiced up throughout the flight. The ultra-low-cost carrier flights I’ve been on have not had any outlets available for charging.
By bringing your own entertainment, you’ll be able to make the most of your flight time and avoid any boredom or restlessness. So, don’t forget to pack your favorite form of entertainment and make your low-cost airline journey much more enjoyable.
Food and drinks on a budget – How to avoid those sky-high prices
After flying American Airlines for most of my life, I’ve gotten used to those mid-air cranberry juices and Biscoff cookies. When I was tempted to buy a snack on my Spirit Airlines flight, that $10 price tag for a canned drink and a snack had me thinking twice. I learned my lesson on that trip and have found some ways to avoid those sky-high prices and still satisfy your hunger.
First and foremost, pack your own snacks at home. I usually toss a granola bar and some pretzels or nuts in my bag. Not only will this save you money, but it will also ensure that you have something to munch on when hunger strikes or you need something to quell the turbulence-induced nausea.
Another option is to buy food before you get to the airport. As long as you’re not bringing anything liquid like soup or a smoothie, you can bring your food through security. So pack an easy lunch or stop by a grocery store or a deli on your way to the airport and grab a sandwich or a salad. This way, you’ll have a tasty and affordable meal to enjoy during your flight.
Lastly, if you absolutely must buy food on the plane, be strategic about it. Check the airline’s website beforehand to see if they offer any pre-order meal options. Often, you can find discounted meal deals if you order in advance. Also, ordering a kid’s meal or snack box is typically much cheaper than an adult meal or individual items. And you can always ask the flight attendants for a complimentary cup of water instead of springing for a soda or bottled water.
By being proactive and thinking ahead, you can avoid spending a small fortune on food and drinks during your low-cost airline journey.
Navigating the budget airline’s fine print
One of the trade-offs of flying with a low-cost carrier is that they often have stricter policies and additional fees compared to traditional airlines. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the fine print to avoid any surprises that may cost you extra money.
First, be aware of the baggage allowances. Budget airlines are notorious for their strict rules on baggage size and weight. I’ve seen them call out individuals at boarding and make them pay for a carry-on bag when their personal item was a little too large. Make sure to check the airline’s website for their specific baggage policy and pack accordingly or be prepared to fork up $$.
Secondly, keep an eye out for hidden fees. Low-cost airlines often charge extra for services that are typically included with other airlines, such as assisted check-in, seat selection, onboard entertainment, and priority boarding. These fees can sometimes be added on during the booking process or when checking in online, so be sure to read the fine print and factor in any additional costs.
Lastly, stay informed about any flight changes or cancellations. Budget airlines may have less flexibility when it comes to rebooking or providing compensation for disruptions. It’s always a good idea to check your flight status and stay in touch with the airline in case there are any last-minute changes to your itinerary.
Navigating the budget airline’s fine print may require some extra effort, but it’s essential for avoiding unnecessary expenses and surprises. Take the time to research and understand the airline’s policies, pack smartly within their baggage limits, anticipate additional fees, and stay updated on any changes to your flight. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well-prepared to make the most of your low-cost airline experience.
Avoid Delays- Book direct flights
While we gave the advice of being flexible, you still want to book smart. Ultra-low-cost airlines are often notorious for delays. When you’re choosing your flights, you’ll want to pay close attention to connecting flight times. If the flight shows less than an hour of connection time, I would avoid it if possible. It’s not uncommon for flights to run 30-45 minutes behind. That could mean a missed flight and hours of waiting at the airport for an alternate flight.
Flexibility is key – How to make the most of flight delays
Nobody likes flight delays, but when you’re flying with a low-cost airline, they can be even more frustrating. However, with a little bit of flexibility and some handy tips, you can make the most of these situations and turn them into a positive experience.
#1- Always stay informed. Download the airline’s mobile app or sign up for email or text notifications to stay updated. Be sure and check your email before leaving for the airport. We’ve gotten alerts about delays on Frontier through my email but never received an alert on the app or a text. You can avoid unnecessary stress and make alternative plans if needed if you regularly check for delays.
#2- Use the extra time wisely. While a frustration and inconvenience, it’s not always the end of the world. You can spend some extra time at your destination. Or if you’re already at the airport, you can use the time to catch up on work, explore the airport, or rest. Take advantage of amenities like lounges, free Wi-Fi, and charging stations. Treat yourself to a meal or snack at a local restaurant or browse through shops. Use the delay as a chance to have some “me” time or to indulge in activities you wouldn’t otherwise have time for.
#3- Make the most of airline policies. Some low-cost carriers offer compensation for flight delays or cancellations, such as vouchers for future travel or hotel accommodations. Check the airline’s website or contact their customer service to understand what options might be available to you. After a 5-hour delay on our recent Frontier flight, we were pleasantly surprised to all receive a $50 voucher for our next flight. Considering we only paid $38 for the flight, this was a pretty awesome deal.
#4- Maintain a positive attitude. Flight delays happen, and getting angry or frustrated won’t change the situation. Instead, practice patience and keep yourself entertained with a good book, a favorite movie, or some soothing music. Remember that your safety is the airline’s priority, and sometimes delays are unavoidable.
