Here are my tried and true tips to make planning your budget travel trip in Europe affordable and feasible: 

Adjust Your Destination: Check Neighboring Countries for the Cheapest Flights

You can save some serious cash by flying into a neighboring country or city. When we first planned our family trip to Germany, we saved hundreds of dollars by flying into Paris. And bonus, we were able to experience two countries! If you’re planning to rent a car and love to explore other places, this is a great option. If, however, you’re relying on train trips and planes, it might not save you much money. Take some time and play around with the routes. 

And you should also check the prices for differing arrival and departure cities. This is a great way to save money, especially if you’re booking flights with points or airmiles. 

Book Budget Accommodations with Kitchens 

This is huge, friends. If you can cook breakfast and pack some lunches, you’ll save 30-50% on food costs. We’re not talking about giving up all the amazing local cuisine – we still typically eat out at least once a day! But making our own breakfast and grabbing groceries for a picnic lunch or dinner frees up money for those nicer meals and treats throughout the week. 

Even if you don’t have a kitchen available, find a hotel or hostel with breakfast included. And you can still grab a supermarket lunch each day to cut down on food expenses. 

Explore Different Ways to Travel Around Europe

Living in Fort Worth, Texas, we have one easy way to get around, and that’s by car. And when I say easy, I actually mean sitting in 10 minutes of traffic just to get out of your neighborhood. So naturally, one of my favorite things to do in other cities is take public transportation. Taking the bus or rail can save you a lot of money versus expensive taxis or other ride-sharing services.

If you’re traveling with a large family or group or are planning to travel through multiple cities or countries, you might consider renting a car. We’re planning to spend a week next summer traveling across Germany and down into Austria, and train tickets for five people would really break our budget. So, in our case, renting a car will be the more affordable way to go and give us the flexibility we need. But it really depends on the number of travelers in your group, where you’re going, and your level of comfort. 

Buy City Tourist Cards

Many countries offer city cards that bundle transportation and attraction entry. Do the math before you buy, but often these can save you serious cash, especially if you’re planning to hit multiple museums.

Note: This is my favorite fancy date night spot in Fort Worth! If you’re looking for the best spot for a drink and unforgettable dinner while in Fort Worth, can’t miss the Wicked Butcher at The Sinclair.

Their Refinery 714 rooftop lounge offers city views that pair perfectly with their craft cocktails. You can also indulge in house-made pasta at Il Modo. All guest rooms feature luxury Frette linens and Ateiler Bloem bath amenities. Pet friendly with zero fees (yes, really!), evening social hour, and a 24-hour fitness center. There’s a reason this hotel is listed in the Michelin Guide. 

The Worthington Renaissance

Talk about Fort Worth royalty! This grande dame of downtown hotels knows how to treat you right. Toro Toro, their Pan-Latin steakhouse, is worth the visit alone. The recently renovated rooms give you that perfect blend of Texas charm and modern luxury. Pet friendly (up to 75 pounds!), indoor pool, spectacular Sundance Square views, and a lobby that’s basically the living room of downtown Fort Worth. 

We recently visited for my birthday with an unexpected upgrade to a one-bedroom suite and a 4 pm late check-out. Every aspect of our visit was spectacular, just like you’d expect from the Worthington. 

Pro tip: Their Club Level rooms include access to a private lounge with a complimentary breakfast buffet (delish!) and evening appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages. 

Hilton Fort Worth

History meets modern comfort at this downtown landmark. Most famous as JFK’s last stop before Dallas, this hotel balances its historic significance with contemporary amenities. Their recently renovated rooms offer Hilton’s signature comfort with city views worth bragging about. Cafe Texas serves breakfast and lunch, while Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse handles dinner in style. Executive floor rooms include lounge access with free breakfast and evening appetizers. Pet friendly (under 75 pounds), fitness center, and a location that puts you steps from Sundance Square. The hotel offers suite options and some rooms feature corner views that showcase downtown Fort Worth. Bonus: their newly refreshed lobby is a perfect meeting spot for both business and pleasure.

There are no suites and rooms can accommodate no more than 4 people, so large families would have to spring for a couple of rooms. 

The indoor splash pool is perfect for any time of the year, and their free coffee and Re:fuel grab-and-go keeps you energized 24/7. Pet friendly (only $25/ pet), and their location puts you steps from all the downtown action. Definitely one of the more affordable yet really fun hotels Downtown, especially if you’re traveling with pets.

Embassy Suites Downtown

Space, style, and free breakfast? Yes, please! Every room is a suite (hence the name), giving you room to spread out and live your best life. This an ideal hotel for traveling families! Their nightly manager’s reception means free drinks and snacks (you’re welcome). Indoor pool, fitness center, and a location that puts you in the heart of everything. It’s a pet-friendly space ($75 for stays of 1-4 days; $125 for longer stays). And their cooked-to-order breakfast will make you a morning person. You work off all that bacon in the on-site fitness center.

Stockyards Fort Worth Hotels: Western Heritage, Modern Comfort

For a taste of real Cowtown History, choose a place to stay in the Stockyards Historic District. From Mule Alley to the Billy Bobs, you’ll love your Stockyards stay.

Ranch life gets a luxury makeover here in Mule Alley. This is probably the most famous hotel in Fort Worth. Their 97 West Kitchen & Bar serves up elevated Texas cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and the outdoor space includes fire pits perfect for evening s’mores. Pet friendly (they love your four-legged cowpokes), multiple suite options, and a pool that seriously feels like a desert oasis. The lobby bar’s craft cocktails will make you forget about your usual drinks order. In the cooler months cozy up their uber comfortable seating by blazing stone fireplaces with a warm drink from the lobby bar. 

Springhill Suites Stockyards

Smart, stylish, and surprisingly spacious. This is my favorite Stockyards Hotel if you’re looking to capitalize on comfort, style, and price. All rooms are suites (hello, extra space and sleeping space for 5 people!), and they include free breakfast that’s actually worth waking up for. The outdoor pool feels private and quiet. No pets are allowed so leave the critters at home. The location puts you steps from the daily cattle drive and Mule Alley. Enjoy dinner with a view at Chef Tim Love’s award-winning rooftop tapas bar Atico. 

We staycationed for my daughter’s birthday in the summer and had the best time swimming, relaxing and enjoying the Stockyards.

Added bonus: Affordable parking at $15 a day, which is pretty cheap for the Stockyards.

Cultural District Fort Worth Hotels: Vibrant and Modern

The Fort Worth Cultural District offers art, music, dining, shopping experiences, and nature for guests with a little more privacy and quiet than other areas of town. 

The Crescent

Upscale comfort meets downtown convenience. Their rooms feature smart TVs, luxury linens, and views that remind you why you love city life. The hotel restaurant Emilia’s serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner  (not included, but worth the splurge). Stop in for brunch on the weekends, complete with live music and a mimosa trolley (Could life be any better?!) Fitness center, business center, and meeting spaces make it perfect for business travelers who like their comfort with a side of style. And it’s literally steps from several museums and a plethora of restaurants. 

Hotel Dryce

Industrial chic meets Texan soul in the Cultural District– former dry ice warehouse, now a 21-room boutique hotel. Bar Dryce has become a local favorite, serving creative cocktails and good vibes with a DJ on the weekends. Grab a meal from the food truck, and a drink from the bar and enjoy this locally-owned favorite.  The location puts you within walking distance from Dickies Arena and the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo and a short drive to museums. No pool, but their social spaces and location more than makeup for it.

Hotel Revel

Another boutique beauty has joined Fort Worth’s hotel scene. The Hotel Revel serves up a style that draws both travelers and locals. Savor a cocktail at Sugarman’s speakeasy-inspired lounge and stay for the sunset on the SkyDeck, with fabulous Fort Worth views.  Rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, local art, premium linens, and thoughtful touches like Nespresso machines. Pets aren’t allowed, but with digs this nice, you won’t be sad about it.  And the free parking is almost unheard of. The location puts you steps from Magnolia Avenue and is only minutes from both the museum district and downtown.

Chef Tim Love is bringing Amalfi Coast vibes to the River District section of the Cultural District. This is the most unique hotel experience in Fort Worth! Their shipping containers turned bungalows create a micro resort experience. Rooms have luxurious linens, Hermès bath amenities, in-room coffee and bar, and a daily complimentary cocktail hour.

Outdoors you can take in Trinity River and garden views from the deck or lounge poolside in a personal cabana. You’re steps from the Trinity Trails and all it has to offer. The hotel’s award-winning restaurant Gemelle serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a focus on local ingredients. And you can’t leave without an Aperol Spritz. Your visit will make you want to move in permanently. If you’re looking for Fort Worth hotels that are unconventional, Hotel Otto should be at the top of your list.

In summer, cool off in Crown Fountain’s playful water displays; in winter, watch skaters glide across the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink against a backdrop of twinkling lights. Or just grab a blanket and enjoy a picnic in the gorgeous green space of Millennium Park.

Magnificent Mile

Just steps away from Millennium Park, the Magnificent Mile beckons. While the luxury shops might tempt your wallet, the real treasure is free: looking up. Chicago is a waterfront city with Lake Michigan to the east and the Chicago River winding through it. And water always brings lots of free activities that are fun for the whole family:

Chicago Riverwalk

Chicago’s relationship with water defines its character, starting with the award-winning Chicago Riverwalk. It’s your free ticket to experience the city’s connection to water. This 1.25-mile promenade offers some of the city’s best views and people-watching opportunities. Promontory Point, or “the Point”,  is a man-made peninsula offering some of the best skyline views of the city. It’s famously known as the location of Barack and Michelle Obama’s first kiss and is a popular spot for weddings and other events. The park is beautiful for relaxing or picnicking and in the warmer months, lake access allows swimming and other water activities. 

Museum Campus

Located in Grant Park, the Museum Campus is its own destination. It’s home to the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, and the Adler Planetarium. While the museums charge admission, the campus grounds are free to explore and offer beautiful views along Lake Michigan. And for Illinois residents, you can find free admission to the museums on specific days!

Lake Michigan Beaches

Chicago’s lakefront features 24 free public beaches spread along its impressive 26-mile shoreline along Lake Michigan. Each beach has its own character and these are our top picks: 

North Avenue Beach

The city’s most popular beach features an ocean liner-inspired beach house, exceptional skyline views, and free volleyball courts. It’s also a prime spot for watching the Air and Water Show in August. At North Avenue Beach you’ll find spots for eats and drinks, as well as bike and jet ski rentals.

Oak Street Beach

Nestled right next to downtown, this beach offers the surreal experience of swimming with skyscrapers as your backdrop. With eating options nearby and lifeguards on site, you can truly relax and enjoy a day on the water.

Montrose Beach

The largest beach in Chicago includes a dog-friendly area and quiet bird sanctuary, plus other amenities such as wi-fi, a boat launch, restrooms, showers, jet ski rentals, fishing, volleyball courts, kayak rentals, kiteboarding, and a full-service restaurant and bar.

57th Street Beach

A local favorite in Hyde Park, perfect for escaping tourist crowds. 

12th Street Beach

A small beach near the Adler Planetarium on Northerly Island with incredible downtown views. 

Rainbow Beach and Park

Chinatown invites visitors to experience a vibrant slice of Asian culture. Wander through Chinatown Square, where zodiac sculptures and traditional architecture transport you across the Pacific. Time your visit right, and you might catch the Chinese New Year parade or the Mid-Autumn Festival – both free and fantastically colorful celebrations.

Little Italy

The Little Italy neighborhood offers history and architecture, plus incredible food. Stroll down the streets and admire the gorgeous churches and buildings from the 1800s. You can wander the 100-year-old Maxwell Street Market every Sunday. The Little Italy Festival takes place in August and celebrates the rich history of the neighborhood. Also, you can 

Chicago Greeter Program

If you’re looking for a free guided tour, you’re in for a treat! Chicago offers free tours through the Chicago Greeter Program. They accommodate up to 6 guests and are completely free of charge. Expect a 2-4 hour tour with a Chicago local who will walk you through the history of the neighborhood of your choice. You must register ahead of time here.

If you didn’t make a reservation ahead of time, you can catch one of the free Instagreeter Downtown tours at the Chicago Loop or the Riverwalk. 

Smart Museum of Art

The Smart Museum of Art is located at the University of Chicago and is free every day for all visitors. It’s a smaller museum and won’t take a full day, but if you’re in the area, it’s a fabulous way to spend an hour or two at this thought-provoking gallery. 

National Museum of Mexican Art

The National Museum of Mexican Art houses one of the largest collections of Mexican art in the country. The museum and collection of art are both vibrant and rich in culture and history and will interest both adults and kids, with its ancient artifacts to its contemporary art. It’s a fabulous free art museum in Chicago!

National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture

The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is located in Humboldt Park and is the only museum in the United States that is solely dedicated to Puerto Rican art and culture. It truly is a one-of-a-kind museum and is free to visit every day. 

Mind Works

Mind Works isn’t your typical museum, It’s an active research center and lab where visitors can take part in research studies as they interactively learn all about how the mind works. It’s located just three blocks south of “the Bean” in Downtown Chicago, making it an easy stop to add during your Downtown adventures. Admission is always free. 

National Veterans Art Museum

The National Veterans Art Museum is located in Portage Park features stunning and thought-provoking art created by Veterans. The museum serves to help visitors experience and connect with war and military service through the art pieces. 

Museum of Contemporary Photography

Located at Columbia College Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Photography features over 16,000 pieces and is considered the top university photographic art museum in the world. Admission is always free and you can also attend special events and lectures for free, as well. 

Hyde Park Art Center

The Hyde Park Art Center features contemporary art by Chicago artists, with a special focus on promoting women and artists of color and helping them launch their artistic careers. The Art Center also offers “pay what you can” art classes, making art accessible to everyone in the community. 

Jane Addams Hull-House Museum

Since 1889, the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum has been open to visitors. It’s located on the University of Illinois Chicago campus and offers free admission for everyone. It’s a memorial to social activist Jane Addams, the first American Nobel Peace Prize recipient, who was a fierce advocate for social reformation. The Hull House Museum is a National Historic Landmark that has been beautifully preserved. 

Clarke House Museum

The Clarke House Museum was built in 1836 and is the oldest surviving house in Chicago. It has survived a fire and relocations and has been beautifully preserved for the public. It is now located in Prairie Avenue Historic District and is open for free public tours.

As a first-time visitor to Chicago, I was shocked by the plethora of outdoor and nature activities in and around nation’s third-largest city. 

Northerly Island

Northerly Island, a 91-acre peninsula alongside the Museum Campus, is Chicago’s hidden natural gem. Once an airport, it’s now a prairie restoration project offering spectacular skyline views and wildlife spotting opportunities. In spring, watch for migrating butterflies; in winter, spot snowy owls against the urban backdrop. It also offers some of the most picturesque views of Downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan.

Lincoln Park Zoo

The Lincoln Park Zoo remains one of the last zoos in the country that offer free admission, and it’s open 365 days a year. Watch polar bears swim, gorillas play, and lions lounge – all without spending a dime. During winter, the free ZooLights transform the grounds into a magical light display (though some special events during this time may charge admission).

Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary

Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary is touted as one of the best places in the world for bird watching. Bring your binoculars and arrive early to this nature escape. It’s located in Lincoln Park near the shores of Lake Michigan. 

Maggie Daley Park Play Garden

Maggie Dailey Park is unlike any city park I’ve ever visited. If you’re visiting Chicago with kids, you can’t miss this 

Lurie Garden

Located in Millennium Park, the Lurie Garden is a bit of a secret garden of gorgeous native blooms, shrubs, and grasses.

Garfield Park Conservatory

The Garfield Park Conservatory takes up 12 acres and has stunning indoor and outdoor gardens. If you’re looking to visit a botanic garden without spending a dime, this is the one for you. 

Lincoln Park Conservatory

Enjoy free admission to Lincoln Park Conservatory every day, as you step into a blooming wonderland in the middle of Chicago. While free to enter, you do need to reserve a timed entry ticket.

Free Things to Do in Chicago Every Season

Spring (March-May)

Spring awakens Chicago with free cultural events. The Chicago Cultural Center hosts free concerts and exhibitions as cherry blossoms paint Jackson Park pink. While Spring can still be quite frigid, you can still enjoy some time in nature with bird watching at Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary or fishing on Lake Michigan for Brown Trout, Steelhead, and Coho Salmon. 

Summer (June-August)

Summer is when Chicago truly shines. The Grant Park Music Festival offers free classical concerts under the stars at the Pritzker Pavilion. Movies in the Parks brings free outdoor screenings to neighborhood parks, while countless street festivals celebrate the city’s diverse communities. Millennium Park’s summer programming includes free live music, dance performances, and workout classes. 

You can also enjoy the dog days of summer lazying around at one of the many beaches on Lake Michigan. Between building sand castles, swimming, beach volleyball, and more there’s something for everyone. You can also find some Free beach yoga classes on the weekends. 

Summer is also the best time for a salmon run. Some of the best spots are at the Lincoln Park Lagoon or Jackson Park Inner and Outer Harbors. 

Fall (September-November)

Autumn brings Open House Chicago, offering free access to normally private architectural treasures. Park trails burst with fall colors, and Halloween transforms Navy Pier into a family-friendly spooky celebration. The Chicago Architecture Biennial (when scheduled) offers free exhibitions and events.

While too cold for swimming, you can still enjoy Lake Michigan activities, like beach combing for sea glass or fishing for large lake trout. 

Winter (December-February)

Chicago embraces winter with free ice skating (bring your own skates) at Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park’s ribbon. The Cultural Center becomes an especially welcome haven, offering warmth, beautiful architecture, and free events. ZooLights and holiday displays throughout downtown create magical evening walks. The Harold Washington Library Center welcomes visitors to explore its nine floors, including a beautiful winter garden atrium on the top floor. You can also find lots of free entry days to museums in the winter months. 

If you want to brave the frigid temps, you can experience the magic of a Chicago winter with its ice formations along the shore, winter bird watching, or winter surfing (or better yet, surfer watching )

Nature’s Playground: NC Hiking and Waterfalls

Hendersonville’s surrounding natural beauty is a TREASURE TROVE of free family fun. Pack some snacks, lace up those hiking boots, and get ready for adventure!

Jump Off Rock

Jump Off Rock, located in Laurel Park and adjacent to Hendersonville, offers one of the most stunning panoramic views in Western North Carolina. This free scenic overlook, perched at 3,100 feet, provides visitors with breathtaking vistas of the Blue Ridge and Pisgah mountain ranges.

Easily accessible by car, it features short walking trails and picnic areas, making it perfect for families and nature enthusiasts. Jump Off Rock is an ideal spot for watching sunsets, enjoying a picnic, or simply taking in the natural beauty of the region.

DuPont State Forest

Just a short drive from Hendersonville, DuPont State Recreational Forest is a paradise for waterfall enthusiasts and hikers of all levels. It’s one of our top recommended things to do in Hendersonville, NC!

Hooker Falls

 An easy 1/4-mile walk from the parking lot leads to a wide, gentle waterfall. It’s great for younger kids and offers a nice swimming hole in warmer months. Hooker Falls was featured in the movie The Last of the Mohicans and is named after a local man Edmund Hooker who owned and operated a mill at the bottom of the falls. 

Triple Falls

 If you’re a Hunger Games fan, you won’t want to miss Triple Falls! The falls are the setting for where Katniss finds Peeta camouflaged among the rocks after being wounded.

This moderate 3-mile round trip hike from the parking lot near Hooker Falls rewards you with views of three cascading waterfalls. It’s a great spot for taking a picnic and enjoying the view along the hike or at the waterfalls. 

High Falls

A bit more challenging, this 1.2-mile round trip hike offers spectacular views of a 150-foot waterfall, the largest in DuPont National Forest. You can access High Falls from a trail connecting to the High Falls Visitor Center or continue up the trail at Triple Falls.

Tip: Visit on weekdays or early mornings to avoid crowds, especially during summer.

Pisgah National Forest

Another gem near Hendersonville, Pisgah National Forest offers more natural wonders:

Looking Glass Falls

Easily accessible right from the roadside, the picturesque 60-foot Looking Glass Falls is perfect for families with small children or those with limited mobility.

Sliding Rock

A natural water slide that’s fun for older kids and adults alike. There’s a small fee to enter the Sliding Rock recreation area during peak season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), but it’s well worth it for the unique experience. The water is quite cold, so be prepared with a dry change of clothes!

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

Combine history and nature at the former home of poet Carl Sandburg:

• Visit the grounds and farm for free
• Five miles of hiking trails suited for various skill levels
• Kids will love the goat farm where kids can see the descendants of Mrs. Sandburg’s award-winning herd! You can pet and interact with the goats. 
• Tours of the historic home ($10 entrance for adults, $6 for 62 and older, free for children under 15)

Park It: Local Green Spaces

Hendersonville’s beautiful local parks offer free outdoor activities and fun for the whole family. Pack a picnic and spend the day enjoying one of these local green spaces. 

Jackson Park

212 acres of natural beauty with ADA-aware playgrounds, Jackson Park also features walking trails, basketball courts, disc golf, picnic areas, and more! It’s western North Carolina’s largest municipal park. 

Patton Park

Patton Park features a swimming pool operated by the YMCA (with a small entry fee), a playground, a skate park, racquetball, athletic courts, playing fields, and walking trails with greenbelt access.   

The Park at Flat Rock

The Park at Flat Rock is a newer ADA-aware park with a natural playground, walking trails, and a tranquil pond.

Downtown Delights: Exploring Hendersonville’s Heart

 The town of Hendersonville’s Main Street is a charming destination filled with free and low-cost activities for all ages. You can’t visit Hendersonville without spending some time in its idyllic downtown area.

Historic Main Street Hendersonville

Spend a day window shopping and people-watching along the historic Main Street. I love to wander around Main Street with an iced latte from Black Bear Coffee while I browse the shops and boutiques.

You’ll find a variety of shops to pique everyone’s interest, including a General Store, apothecary, pet store, toy store, craft vendor market, resale shops, apparel boutiques, art studios, jewelry store, and other specialty shops. If your stomach starts to rumble, you’re in luck– you’ll find an assortment of dining and drink options along Main Street.

Hands On! Children’s Museum

If you’re looking for things to do in Hendersonville with the kids, you won’t want to miss the interactive and engaging exhibits at Hands On! It’s a favorite attraction for kids. You can find reduced admission through the Museums for All Initiative for certain eligible guests, first Friday Nights where admission is $1, as well as daily military discounts. Or if you’ll be returning at least 3 times, consider a membership! 

Mineral and Lapidary Museum

If you have some free time, this small, unassuming museum is worth checking out. The Mineral and Lapidary Museum offers free admission to see fossils, gems, and minerals, as well as touch a fossilized dinosaur egg nest and view an actual leg bone from a wooly mammoth! 

Appalachian Pinball Museum

If you love playing games, the Pinball Museum is the place for you! For a $13 flat fee you can play more than 80 games all day! From classic pinball games to other favorite video games, this is a family-friendly favorite for all ages. You can also purchase sodas and snacks for $1, making this a super budget-friendly activity.

Team ECCO Aquarium & Shark Lab

A budget-friendly and educational aquarium experience in Downtown Hendersonville, Team ECCO Aquarium and Shark Lab was actually the first inland aquarium in North Carolina. It’s only open a few hours a week, so be sure and check their website for current hours. Admission is with military ID and discounted rates for military family members teachers / EMTs/ Police/ Fire. 

Art MoB Studios and Marketplace

Enjoy the incredible work by local artists at the Art MoB. From handcrafted jewelry to textiles to paintings, you’ll find an intriguing assortment of art for purchase. You can also pop in some of the artists’ on-site studios and experience their work firsthand. While I would hesitate to bring very young or rambunctious kids in, my older girls really enjoyed our visit. 

Sweet Treats and Eats

No family outing is complete without some delicious food, and Hendersonville definitely delivers. Here are a few of our budget-friendly favorites that you don’t want to miss:

HenDough

HenDough takes donuts to a whole new level. They’re totally drool-worthy. This local favorite serves up unique donut flavors and fried chicken biscuits and sandwiches, plus much more 7 days a week. Try their creme brule donut for a sweet, delectable treat or their homemade hot chicken biscuit for a spicy, savory breakfast. I’m pretty sure we visited 4 times in one week. It’s that good. 

Whit’s Frozen Custard

Creamier than ice cream and oh-so-delicious. Whit’s is another of our absolute favorites. As in we went there 5 times in one week so good! Choose from classic vanilla or chocolate, a special flavor each day, or their flavor of the week. Eat it plain or choose your favorite mix-ins or toppings. We are hooked!

Moe’s Original Barbeque

I might be a vegetarian now, but that doesn’t mean I don’t recognize some good BBQ. And Moe’s has it all. They have so many delicious sides to choose from, which makes my vegetarian daughter and myself really, really happy. And our party tried 4 different kinds of meat and they raved about it all. And while BBQ isn’t cheap, my big kids were able to share a meal and left feeling full. 

White Duck Taco Shop

This Texas girl loves her tacos and the White Duck Taco Shop didn’t disappoint. We shared chips and queso and tried a few different tacos and it was good stuff. They offer some really unique flavors, so come hungry and try a few. Plus their sangrias are super tasty, too!

Southern Appalachian Brewery

This family-friendly brewery is a hit for adults and kids. Adults can enjoy the brewery offerings while kids have ample space to run and play. And while there are often food trucks you can purchase food from, you can also bring your own food, making this super budget-friendly!

West First Wood Fired Pizza

if you’re looking for a nice dining experience that won’t break the bank, give West First Wood Fired Pizza a chance! This super popular downtown restaurant offers only delicious, quality made-from-scratch options. Their pizza crust seriously has the perfect balance of chew and crisp.

My husband I ventured here for a date night, but you’ll find plenty of families dining, as well. We shared a large Caesar salad and their Hawaiian pizza. If you’re trying to stretch your dollars and feed a few people, I suggest ordering the garlic knots as an appetizer and a couple of pizzas to share. A cheese pizza could easily feed 2 or 3 kids, making this a more affordable fine

• Jeter Mountain Farm: A pick-your-own orchard that offers so much more,  including a bakery, coffee shop, indoor playground, a smokehouse, a farmers market and live bluegrass music every weekend,
• Justus Orchard: This 5th generation family-owned and operated farm and orchard offers pick-your-own apples, pears, and blackberries, as well as a bakery with their famous homemade baked goods, including fried apple pies and apple donuts. The kids will love visiting and enjoying the Cow Train and other fun activities. You can also enjoy a beverage in their new taproom, which sells local seasonal hard fruit ciders, craft beers, and wines.  
• Grandad’s Apples: Offers a quintessential fall farm experience for families. Visitors can enjoy pick-your-own apples in the orchard, explore a 5-acre corn maze, and take scenic wagon rides around the farm. The country store and bakery offer fresh apple products, including their famous apple cider donuts, pies, fresh cider, and local honey. For added fun, families can visit the barnyard area to see farm animals, play on the jump pad, or try their hand at gem mining.
• Creasman Farms: If you’re in Hendersonville in September or October, head over to Creasman Farms on a Sunday afternoon and pick your own apples from their expansive orchard of over 40 types of apples. This family-owned and operated farm also sells their homegrown produce at farmers’ markets throughout the year.

Hendersonville hosts several free or low-cost events throughout the year:

• North Carolina Apple Festival (Labor Day weekend): Celebrates the local apple industry with parades, rides, inflatables, music, food, a vendor market, plus more entertainment. It’s a huge event in Hendersonville and draws crowds from all around. 
• Garden Jubilee (Memorial Day weekend): A self-described “garden wonderland” with hundreds of vendors featuring plants, crafts, and garden accessories. You can also enjoy live music, delicious food, special guest speakers, and much more. Event organizers do ask that you leave pets at home, due to the large crowds and the potential for paw injuries due to all the garden carts
• Music on Main Street (summer months): Free concerts every Friday evening, along the Carolina Mountain Car Club weekly car show from June to August. Vendors will have food for purchase or you can save some money by bringing your own food and drink to enjoy. 
• Street Dances (summer months):  This Blue Ridge tradition dates back to 1918 after WWI to welcome back the town’s soldiers. This historic celebration features local bluegrass music, square dancing, and Appalachian clogging demonstrations. All are welcome to join in and dance or bring a lawn chair and enjoy the music. 
• Acoustic Jam Sessions (Fridays year round): Just west of Hendersonville in Etowah, Sideways Farm, and Brewery offers acoustic jam sessions all year long, no matter the temps. Bring your instruments or sing along with other local musicians while you enjoy their craft brews, non-alcoholic sips, and featured food trucks. 
• Treat Street Carnival (Halloween): A safe and fun trick-or-treating event up and down Main Street in downtown Hendersonville.

• Appalachian Pinball Museum: As mentioned above, for $13 you can play unlimited pinball and arcade games all day long. It’s the perfect rainy day activity. 
• Pisgah Forest Gem Mine: Try your hand at gem mining and see what beautiful gems and crystals you can discover! If you’re lucky, you might even find a ruby, sapphire, or emerald! Prices depend upon the bucket size you purchase. 
• The Hendersonville Theater: Check the Hendersonville Theater schedule for any family-friendly shows in production.

Here are my top tips for saving money on your last-minute Mother’s Day getaway. I use these tips every time I plan travel for my family, so hopefully they’ll save you some $$$, too!

• Choose a hotel within walking distance of attractions. This saves money on car rentals, and parking and saves you time! Opt for an Uber to and from the airport instead of renting a car, or take public transportation if it’s available!
• Choose a hotel that offers free breakfast. Load up on a big breakfast, snack for lunch, and eat an early dinner. This will save a lot of money on food, versus eating out for 3 meals a day.
• Look for free attractions. I prefer to stay in major cities and places of natural beauty, where you’ll find free attractions and activities like museums, markets, hiking, gardens, etc.
• Avoid expensive tours and other touristy activities with heavy price tags. While fun, these are not always budget-friendly, and you can thoroughly enjoy a trip without having to spring for expensive tours. Instead, take a self-guided audio tour that is much easier on the wallet!
• If you want to do multiple paid attractions, check for a CityPass for your destination. You can save a ton of money, versus paying for each attraction separately!

Charleston, South Carolina

Another Southern city that you don’t want to miss is Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston epitomizes Southern elegance and charm, making it a picturesque setting for a Mother’s Day escape. Known for its well-preserved architecture, an abundance of activities, shopping and dining, and friendly locals, Charleston offers a smart blend of relaxation and leisure.

Staying in historic downtown Charleston is going to cost you a pretty penny. So, if you’re looking for a more affordable option for lodging that’s in the vicinity of Downtown and just a quick drive to the historic district, you’ll like the Holiday Inn Express Suites Charleston Downtown.  You’ll enjoy a free hot breakfast buffet each morning, clean and comfy rooms, an outdoor pool, and a fitness center at this pet-friendly hotel.

If you’re willing to drive even further, you’ll find even better hotel deals. Personally, for a quick weekend trip, I prefer to stay closer to walkable areas, so this hotel already feels like a bit of a sacrifice. But when most other hotels are upwards of $400 a night, this feels like a reasonable compromise for price and location.

Things to Do in Charleston

Explore the cobblestone streets of the historic district on a free walking tour that covers significant sites and hidden gems. Afterward, enjoy a picnic at Waterfront Park, where you can stretch out for a picnic and watch ships pass by under the shade of oak trees. The park often hosts free public events, including live music and art exhibits, providing entertainment amidst a stunning backdrop.

For art enthusiasts visit the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art at the College of Charleston. You’ll enjoy works of contemporary art by new and overlooked artists.

And a visit to Charleston has to include the Angel Oak Tree on John’s Island. It’s said to be the oldest living thing east of the Mississippi River and is jaw-dropping. 

San Diego, California

San Diego’s reputation for warm weather, beautiful beaches, and a laid-back lifestyle makes it a fantastic destination for a stress-free Mother’s Day getaway. From sun-soaked shores to vibrant cultural experiences, San Diego offers a myriad of activities to fill your visit with joy and relaxation. I would never be disappointed with a getaway to San Diego!

San Diego is accessible via the San Diego International Airport, with multiple airlines offering budget-friendly options, including Frontier, Spirit, Jet Blue, and Southwest. The city is also a great endpoint for a California road trip if you’re coming from nearby states. The drive up and down the coast is phenomenal and an attraction in itself

Staying in San Diego

My favorite, affordable option in San Diego is Fairfield Inn and Suites in Old Town. My sisters and I stayed here on our sister trip to San Diego last October and had an ideal experience. It’s in charming, walkable Old Town, convenient to coffee shops, shopping, and plenty of restaurants. Its central location makes it a quick train or Uber ride to anywhere else in San Diego. The hotel has a beautiful outdoor pool area with fountains and lush greenery. It also offers a free hot breakfast each day. And you can not beat the price for San Diego! Seriously, I will recommend it again and again. 

Things to Do in San Diego

If you’re looking for free things to do in San Diego, you’ll have trouble fitting them all in on your weekend getaway. Everything is so gorgeous and enjoyable that you’ll want to spend hours just taking it all in. 

Spend a morning at La Jolla Cove, where you can sunbathe, swim, swoon at all the sea lions, or simply enjoy the ocean views while you sip on your coffee and enjoy decadent pastries from one of the many local bakeries.  On Sunday morning you can also enjoy the La Jolla Open Aire Farmers Market. 

You could also go hiking or bird watching at Torrey Pines State Park, one of the most beautiful spots along the San Diego coastline.  Then head over to Balboa Park to explore its gardens, museums, and free pipe organ performance each Sunday at 2 pm on the world’s largest outdoor organ. The Spreckles Organ is   Many museums offer free days once a month, adding a cost-effective way to soak in culture and history.

Another must-visit is Coronado Island. It’s the ideal spot to lay out a blanket and soak up the sun on the gorgeous white sands of the Pacific Coast. You can also wander around this classic San Diego beach town and enjoy window shopping or take a self-guided tour of the famous Victorian-style Hotel del Coronado and its vast grounds. 

And let’s not forget Sea Port Village, with its quaint seaside buildings. If you enjoy walking and sightseeing, you’ll find so many idyllic spots in San Diego.

If I had to pick just one, I’d choose the Royal Sonesta Portland Downtown. This whimsical, boutique hotel is as magical as the city itself. From its quirky, playful wallpaper to thoughtful art and creative touches everywhere, you’ll be intrigued by this beautiful, award-winning hotel. And with holiday weekend prices at less than $150 a night, it’s a steal.

Begin your exploration at the Portland Rose Test Garden, the oldest public rose test garden in the United States, where you can stroll through thousands of rose bushes and enjoy breathtaking views of the city skyline. For book lovers, a visit to Powell’s City of Books, one of the largest independent bookstores in the world, is a must. Powell’s offers a rare blend of new, used, and rare books that can engage any literary enthusiast for hours.

The artsy spirit of Portland is palpable in its many galleries and street art installations, particularly in the vibrant Pearl District, which hosts numerous art walks and exhibitions. For a leisurely afternoon, take a walk along the Willamette River in Tom McCall Waterfront Park, which often features seasonal festivals and markets that can be enjoyed at no cost.

Portland’s array of eclectic coffee shops and farm-to-table restaurants also offer plenty of opportunities to relax and indulge in local flavors without spending a fortune. Boulder is the perfect atmosphere for an active Mother’s day excursion, a relaxing day in nature, or a day of shopping and dining. This beautiful city will make your Mother’s Day getaway an unforgettable adventure with Mom. 

Naples, Florida

Naples, Florida, with its great beaches and upscale atmosphere, is a luxurious destination with affordable options for a last-minute Mother’s Day celebration. This seaside town offers tranquility and relaxation amidst its tropical landscape and soft white sand beaches.

I had a hard time. narrowing it down to one accommodation, so I’ve got a couple for you. If you’re looking to be within walking distance from the beach, the Gondolier Inn is where you’ll want to stay without dropping several hundred dollars a night. This adorable, roadside inn is just the cutest. From its chic, modern furnishings to its incredible location just 3 blocks from the beach, it’s the best spot for a beach weekend with Mom.

If you’re looking for something a little more budget-friendly without compromising on comfort and beautiful views, you’ll love the Hyatt House Naples/5th Avenue. Philadelphia International Airport offers numerous direct flights, making it easily accessible. You can find affordable flights on low-cost carriers including Frontier, Spirit, Sun Country, Jet Blue, and Southwest Airlines. We’ve even found $100 flights to Philly on American Airlines before. The city is also well-connected by Amtrak and major highways, catering to those who prefer ground transportation. 

Staying in Philadelphia

To maximize on location, budget, and comfort, you can’t go wrong with the Motto by Hilton Rittenhouse Square. The price is a steal for a downtown hotel, the location is perfect for accessing favorite Philadelphia sights, shops, and restaurants in Center City, and the rooms are clean and modern and comfortable for a weekend stay. While you won’t have free breakfast or tons of space in the room, the value and location more than makeup for that. 

Things to Do in Philadelphia

Visit Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed, and explore the Liberty Bell Center. Walk through the historic Old City, where cobblestone streets and centuries-old buildings transport you back in time.

Visit the historic Reading Terminal Market, where you’ll find a plethora of shopping and fabulous food and dining options, including delectable baked goods from an Amish bakery, a variety of international fare, and much more. Eat there or take your food to go and enjoy it at one of the incredible parks in Downton Philly, such as Franklin Square.

For art lovers, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Barnes Foundation offer extensive collections, and many museums have “pay what you wish” days.

Austin, Texas

Austin, Texas, known for its vibrant live music scene and eclectic culture, offers a lively urban escape for your Mother’s Day weekend getaway. This city is perfect for those who enjoy music, great food, and a fun, Texas vibe.

The Downright Austin- A Renaissance Hotel is a recently renovated Marriott brand hotel in Downtown Austin with views of the State Capitol building. With a resort-style pool, bar, and restaurant onsite, a fitness center, and updated, comfortable rooms, this is the best deal for a downtown Austin hotel. It’s a few minutes walk from restaurants, live music, and shopping that Austin is famous for.

This hotel was a Sheraton when we stayed here at the start of the renovations, and I’m excited to go back and see all the gorgeous updates! In my experience, you can’t go wrong with a Renaissance Hotel.   

Things to Do in Austin

There’s so much to do in Austin! The Live Music Capital of the World. Kick off your visit by exploring the South Congress Avenue (SoCo) district, known for its bohemian vibe and an array of unique boutiques, art galleries, and eateries. Don’t miss the chance to experience Austin’s live music scene, which can be enjoyed at many venues across the city, often without a cover charge. Welcome to the heart of Texas! Waco is not just a city, it’s a treasure trove of fun in this bustling city with a small-town feel. It’s the perfect little getaway for families eager to make some lasting memories together without having to spend a fortune. It’s also a perfect getaway for moms looking for a girls’ weekend!

You can spend your days exploring everything from the bustling Magnolia Market to the expansive Cameron Park, all while soaking in the rich history and welcoming vibe that Texans are famous for. Our three days in Waco were filled with drool-worthy eats and drinks, fabulous shopping, and picturesque outdoor spots.  Let’s dive into our three-day itinerary that promises enjoyment for everyone in your crew without running you ragged or draining your pocketbook. Grab your family and let’s get started on planning your 3 days in Waco!

Get to Waco

We live in Fort Worth, so it’s an “easy” 1.5-hour trip south on I-35. (There’s a reason we Texans have a love/hate relationship with I-35).  If flying in from out of town, the closest airport is Waco Regional Airport. Currently, American Airlines is the primary passenger airline offering direct and connecting flights to Waco, linking Waco with major hubs and thereby to destinations worldwide. Once at the airport, you can easily rent a car or Uber to your destination. 

You could also check for flights to Austin, which is 90 miles south of Waco or fly into Dallas-Fort Worth, which is 90 miles north of Waco. With 3 airports less than a 2-hour drive from Waco, you’ve got plenty of options. 

Stay in Waco

There are plenty of places to stay in Waco. We are working on racking up our Marriott nights right now and knew we wanted to stay Downtown so we didn’t have to drive much during our 3 days in Waco. We picked an ideal location for our time in Waco! We stayed Downtown at the Courtyard by Marriott. It was perfect because we rarely had to get in the car. We could easily walk around Downtown, to Spice Village and the Suspension Bridge. It kept us more active and we could avoid fighting any traffic. And parking at the hotel was FREE! Score!

The hotel itself was quiet, pet-friendly, and clean. We reserved a suite and had plenty of room for our family of 5 (and a kitty), with the sofa and extra rollaway bed they provided. While it didn’t include free breakfast, they did offer free coffee and typically had some fresh fruit and fruit-infused water available for free, as well. 

The girls were hoping to swim in the “heated” outdoor pool, but it was definitely not heated, so that was out of the question with the 50-degree mornings we had that week. So if you want to swim, pick warmer months. 

As Marriott Bonvoy Elite members, we are fortunate to get late check-out at 4 pm. This is a huge benefit and allows us to enjoy our destination that final day without feeling like we have to rush out the door. We love the perks of being Bonvoy Elite members and credit card holders and all of the points and free hotel stays we have accumulated throughout the years. We’ve saved thousands of dollars!!! I highly recommend looking into Marriott Bonvoy for your family if you want to stay at amazing hotels for free! 

Eat in Waco

Waco is a foodie’s heaven, There’s no shortage of mom-and-pop cafes, breweries, food trucks, and trendy restaurants. There’s no way I could list them all or fit as many in as I would like to during our 3 days in Waco.

Here are a few Waco faves from this trip and past visits:

Health Camp

Contrary to its name, this place will set you back a couple of thousand calories easily. But it’s dang good! Think retro digs, old-time hamburgers, crispy fries, tots, onion rings, and over 30 flavors of malts and milkshakes. This place has been around since 1948 for a good reason! Health Camp is always at the top of our list when we’re in Waco. 

Vitek’s Market

We didn’t make it there on this trip, but this famous barbecue spot is a favorite for a reason. Their Gut Pak is legendary, despite the interesting name. And if your family has some vegetarians like us, you can still enjoy their giant spuds and delish sides. 

Southern Roots Brewing Company

When you’re itching for pizza and beer, Southern Roots Brewing has the hook-up. Order a couple of large pizzas to share and some of their flagship or seasonal beers brewed on-site.  Plus, you’ll love the relaxed and welcoming environment, with lots of card and board games available to play while you dine. It’s the perfect casual spot to hang out with the kids or friends and chow down on some legit pies. 

Magnolia Table

We unfortunately haven’t made it in yet, but if you’re headed to Waco, you might be dying to try Magnolia Table, Joanna Gaines’ restaurant in the Historic Elite Cafe Building. With a beautifully designed interior and tempting menu offerings, the rave reviews confirm this is a must-visit while in Waco. 

George’s

Another long-time Waco spot, George’s is a classic for a big American breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It’s not fancy but it sure is good! It has some typical greasy spoon offerings, like its award-winning chicken fried steak, and a huge assortment of traditional sports bar food, as well. With its full bar, it’s a great spot to catch a game or hang with a group of friends or the family. 

Union Hall

If you can’t agree on what to eat, head to Union Hall. This food court-style eatery has over a dozen vendors, so you can find food to make everyone happy. We stopped in for the gelato and it was divine. Food halls are always a go-to for our family, and we loved finding Union Hall when we were wandering around Downtown Waco. 

Bitty and Beau’s Coffee

While it’s not just specific to Waco, Bitty and Beau’s Coffee is a chain that you’ll love to get behind. They’re a self-described “human rights movement disguised as a coffee shop.” They’re dedicated to offering people with disabilities a place to work and to add value. It’s a beautiful little coffee shop that is empowering the special needs community while also educating the public on the inherent value of each individual no matter their abilities. It’s money well spent, in my opinion. And it’s dang tasty, too!

3 Days in Waco Itinerary

Here’s a quick recap of our 3 days in Waco. We left quite a bit of space for downtime and leisure. None of us love to pack our schedule full. We enjoy and value rest time on our vacations, but you could easily fit in more sights if that’s your family’s speed! We also choose to do activities that don’t require any spending. I prefer spending my vacation money on my belly (LOL) over activities with a big price tag, but you can tweak your activities for your own family’s budget and likes. We’re all different, so to each their own!

Day 1: Travel and Downtown Waco

Morning: Travel We packed up ourselves and the kitty cat and headed to Waco with plans to arrive after lunchtime. Since our hotel didn’t provide free breakfast, we decided to make a pitstop in West, Texas for some of this Czech town’s famous kolaches, so we could eat in the hotel room and save a bit of money. The Czech Stop didn’t disappoint! After we were armed with a couple dozen different kolaches for breakfasts and snacks, we headed on to check in at our hotel in Waco.

Afternoon: Coffee and Chill After we arrived, our girls and the kitty made themselves comfy in the room with no intention of leaving for the next few hours. The hubs and I were ready to get outdoors and explore around our hotel, so with my high schooler in charge of the kids and cat, we walked over to Bitty and Beau’s for an iced coffee. 

It was bustling and for a good reason! Not only is the coffee top-notch, but you are also supporting an incredible cause and helping to support special needs teens and adults. Plus, it’s the perfect location and environment for relaxing or working remotely. We made a note to come back before we left town and then headed back to check on the kiddos. 

Late Afternoon/Evening: Dinner and Dessert in Downtown I use the term evening loosely. We are early birds when it comes to dinner. So around 5 pm, when the tummies started to rumble, we wrapped up our first day back in Downtown Waco at Southern Roots Brewing Company for some pizza, a couple of rounds of Uno, and a beer and cider for the grown-ups. It was a 10-minute walk from our hotel, so we got to see a lot of Downtown and eye some cute little boutiques my 12-year-old and I were determined to visit before we left.

After dinner and the sweet tooth hit, we scoped out a gelato spot inside Union Hall. We tried a  few different flavors, but the favorite was the Sea Salt Caramel gelato. It was drool-worthy. And we were so excited to eat it that we didn’t even get a pic to show you how glorious it looked. But take my word for it: it’s divine. 

After all that eating, the food coma was hitting and the afternoon caffeine had worn off, so we wandered back to our hotel and stayed put for the night. 

Day 2: Shopping and Leisure

Morning: Magnolia Market When you visit Waco, it’s just a give-in that you should start your Waco adventure at the Magnolia Silos. The Magnolia Silos area is a must-visit for fans of Chip and Joanna Gaines. While I wouldn’t consider myself a huge fan, it was still impressive and a beautiful spot to explore in Waco. 

This market isn’t just a place to shop—it’s a whole experience for all ages. You could easily spend hours here. While parents might enjoy admiring the gorgeously crafted home decor, kids and adults alike can enjoy the spacious lawn for a game of cornhole or chase bubbles. And don’t miss the Silos Baking Company for a delicious cupcake or two! (Just be prepared for a long line!)

And if you’re arriving on a weekend or holiday, be prepared for crowds! If possible, plan your visit for a weekday in the off-season. You’ll be able to enjoy it so much more! 

If you have time after visiting the shops at the silos, you could easily plan a visit to the Dr. Pepper Museum, which is just down the street. I thought it would be fun to visit the museum but no one in my family had any interest, mostly since none of us are Dr. Pepper fans (I know, that is completely totally un-Texan.)  And I learned a long time ago that if no one wants to do it, don’t waste the effort or money. 

The Dr. Pepper Museum is open daily for tours for $10 a person and includes a Dr Pepper from their soda fountain. You can also just visit the soda fountain on sight without a tour ticket, so if you’re a Dr. Pepper fan, you’ll love this Waco gem!

Afternoon: Lunch and Shopping When we come to Waco, we always eat at Fazoli’s. It’s a fave from my childhood, and I’ve shared that love of their garlic butter-drenched breadsticks with my girls. Droooooool. Plus, it’s cheap and quick for when we need an affordable and fast little lunch. 

After you’ve engorged in all the carbs, you can attempt to keep yourself awake and burn off a bit of that bread with a walk downtown. We scoped out some shopping and enjoyed the gorgeous Spring weather. You can’t hardly beat springtime in Texas! By this time, we were all dragging and decided to deal with our over-full bellies the professional way: A NAP. 

After a quick nap, my twelve-year-old and I left the other 3 sleepy heads at the hotel and walked over to Spice Village, located in the 1908 Waco Hardware building.

This shopper’s paradise features over 60 boutiques under one roof, offering unique gifts, home decor, and fashion. It’s a fantastic place for finding souvenirs and supporting local artisans.

We are the only ones who enjoy shopping in our family, and we love to hunt for a deal. After digging around, my daughter found the cutest little ivory faux leather jacket on clearance and a precious houndstooth turtle neck that is just the cutest ever on her. And bonus, we only spent $35! 

After a successful shopping trip, it was back to the hotel to decide on dinner. 

Late Afternoon/ Evening: Suspension Bridge and Dinner Even though our hotel was practically across the street from the Waco Suspension Bridge and we had walked past it multiple times when we were headed Downtown, we still hadn’t walked across it. This iconic structure offers a glimpse into the city’s past and stunning views of the Brazos River. And it’s a great spot for family photos!

We had to hop in the car for dinner, so we could head over to Health Camp. This wasn’t our initial foray there, so we were already drooling at the thought of some crispy tots and one of their incredible milkshakes. This little burger shop gets pretty busy at mealtimes, so if you can get there early to beat the rush, you’ll be glad you did. 

We were completely worthless after that meal, so we called it a day and headed back to the hotel to hang out for the evening.

Day 3: Shopping/Outdoors/Head Home

Morning: Waco River Walk and Downtown Shopping The Waco River Walk is the perfect place for a leisurely stroll, run, or bike ride. It spans both sides of the Brazos River and connects Cameron Park to Downtown to  Baylor University. With plans for a 30-minute walk, we strapped the kitty cat on our backs in his cat backpack and headed out on the cool, spring morning.

We started at Washington Avenue, crossed over on the Suspension Bridge, and wandered over to Martin Luther King Jr Park. You’ll see an impressive mural of MLK Jr. and the March on Washington.

There was also an incredibly beautiful Memorial for Waco-born Doris Miller, a WWII hero from the Attack of Pearl Harbor.

If you’re looking for a relaxing way to enjoy Waco and take in the scenery around the Brazos, you could book a Brazos Morning or Sunset Boat Tour. This 2-hour tour makes multiple stops to allow you time to capture photos and explore the landmarks. It was out of the budget for our family this time, but if you’re short on time, it would be a great way to take in more of the beauty and history of Waco

After our walk, we dropped the kitty off at the hotel and then headed downtown for a last little jaunt. Mae and I hadn’t forgotten about those boutiques we scoped out on our first night there, so we convinced everyone to head downtown so we could shop a bit. They lasted about 10 minutes at the first boutique before we shooed them out the door and promised to meet up for lunch in a bit. There are so many charming little boutiques in Downtown Waco, and I can’t wait to go back when we have more time to wander around. 

Afternoon: Lunch, Coffee Stop, the Bear Habitat and Cameron Park

The girls were craving some Asian food for lunch, and we previously spotted a little Japanese spot near Spice Village,  just a 5-minute walk from our hotel. It was quick and tasty and satisfied everyone. And since we highly value napping on vacation in our family, we headed back to the hotel for some shut-eye. 

I knew we were leaving that afternoon, and I was dying to head back to Bitty and Beau’s one more time, so I promised my youngest a smoothie if she’d come with me. We sat outside on their patio and savored our drinks before we knew we needed to head back to pack up and check out by 4 pm.

A little before 4, we checked out of the hotel with two more spots on our list: the Baylor Bear Habitat and Cameron Park. My husband said he’d drop us off by the Bears because parking is a struggle around there! We were so bummed to find out that they weren’t out that afternoon!  Womp womp. Next time!

So, on to Cameron Park, one of my favorite places in Waco! We were happy to find another tuxedo cat in a backpack carrier. (Yay, cat. moms!) The two younger girls played on the Pecan Bottom playground for a bit while the rest of us enjoyed the views of the Brazos and the natural scenery.

The 416-acre Cameron Park offers so much to visitors, including multiple playgrounds, splash pads, hiking on trails like the well-known Jacob’s Ladder, mountain bike trails, an incredible zoo, and more. You could easily spend an entire day here if your family loves the outdoors. (I’m still working on my crew.) 

After an hour, we knew we needed to get back and check on our other kitties, so we loaded up the car and made the 1.5-hour trek back to Fort Worth. So long, Waco!

Wrapping Up- 3 Days in Waco

As our 3 days in Waco came to a close, we left with happy kids, full bellies, and some fun memories. It’s one of my favorite Texas towns, with its blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. With so much to see and do, there’s something for everyone here. It’s ideal for day trips from Fort Worth, Dallas, and Austin, or longer getaways. When I’m really wanting to go out but a dinner out isn’t in the budget, a coffee shop is a great compromise! I can enjoy a coffee and pastry for about $10. And lingering at a coffee shop is never an issue. You’ll find no shortage of fabulous cafes and coffee shops in San Diego.

If you find yourself in La Jolla, visit Il Giardino di Lilli for massive Italian pastries and rich espresso drinks in beautiful surroundings.

And if you’re in Old Town, you can’t pass up Garden Coffee. It’s a hidden gem that is actually quite different from the Old Town Vibe. This gorgeous little outdoor oasis is the perfect spot to stop for an inexpensive pick-me-up during your time in Old Town.

Picnic

With the gorgeous San Diego weather, you can’t beat a picnic at the beach or the park. Grab a blanket and visit one of the local farmers’ markets or supermarket delis to pick up a lunch to eat outdoors. This is a surefire way to save on food spending while enjoying that amazing San Diego sunshine.

So, whether you’re craving a quick and tasty bite or looking to unwind with a cold brew, San Diego offers a wide range of budget-friendly options that will leave you satisfied.

Free or Cheap Things to Do in San Diego

San Diego offers a fantastic array of free or low-cost attractions that are a must-see for any budget-conscious traveler.

Balboa Park

First on the list is Balboa Park, a sprawling cultural oasis that boasts stunning gardens, gorgeous architecture, and a variety of museums, plus the famous San Diego Zoo. You can’t visit San Diego without a stop at Balboa Park. While most of the museums have an admission fee, you can still explore the park’s expansive grounds and trails for free.

One jewel of a museum that always offers free general admission is the Timken Museum of Art. Featured in their collection are European and American masterpieces that span from medieval to modern exhibitions.

And if possible, you must visit Balboa Park on a Sunday when they have free live performances at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion, courtesy of the largest outdoor pipe organs in the world. Check in the summer for extra performance dates and times.

For an affordable, self-guided tour of Balboa Park, all you need is your cell phone! WeGoTrip offers an hour-long audio tour of the grounds of Balboa Park, so you can learn more about the history, architecture, and everything Balboa Park offers guests. And it will cost you less than $10. (Museum entry is not included.)

If you do want to visit more of the museums and the zoo without having to fork up too much cash, you should consider the San Diego Go City Pass. The all-inclusive lets you visit tons of attractions in San Diego. You choose how many days you want your pass to last, and the price adjusts from there. It will save you A LOT of money versus paying for each attraction separately.

Cabrillo National Monument

For history and nature enthusiasts, a visit to Cabrillo National Monument is a must. Located at the tip of Point Loma, this park offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the opportunity to learn about the history and natural wonders of the area. Entrance to the park is $20 a car or $10 a person if you’re walking in. It’s free if you have a National Parks annual pass.

La Jolla Cove

If you’re looking to enjoy picturesque views of the crystal clear Pacific coast while watching herds of sea lions and seals set in the most beautiful beach town, you can’t pass up visiting La Jolla and spending a few hours around La Jolla Cove. It is my very favorite place to visit in San Diego! I would be satisfied to spend all of my time here. If you’re visiting San Diego on a budget, La Jolla Cove is a must-see!

Street parking is free, as well as entrance to the beach. There are signs and boundaries that prohibit you from getting too close to the sea lions, but you’ll have plenty of space to watch them from afar.

If you visit on a Sunday, you can wander through the La Jolla Open Aire Market, where you can enjoy treats from local vendors and enjoy a picnic and free entertainment. It’s an inexpensive way to dine in a city that is famous for its high cost of living.

Old Town San Diego

Don’t forget to check out Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. This charming area of San Diego is rich in history. You can explore the preserved adobe buildings, browse through unique shops, enjoy eats and drinks at the various cafes and restaurants, and enjoy live entertainment. Admission to the park is free, and it’s a great opportunity to experience the charm of old San Diego without emptying your wallet. You can easily find free street parking or park in one of the many lots for free after 5 pm or all weekend.

Coronado Beach

If you’re looking for a relaxing day at the beach in San Diego, a visit to Coronado Island might be in order. We love picnicking on the soft, white sand or coming out to watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

We also enjoy walking around the grounds at the Hotel del Coronado. This all-wood-constructed beachside resort is a dream to walk around and explore.

We love to wander around the grounds and inside the resort and take in the architecture and entertainment. It’s definitely not a budget-friendly hotel to stay at, but you can still enjoy some of it for free!

Another thing I love about Coronado Island is the free parking. You can drive into Coronado and park on the street or in the beach parking for free anytime. If you prefer not to drive onto the island, you can park at the Coronado Ferry Landing near Seaport Village Trolley Stop and ride the ferry across San Diego Bay onto the island. A round-trip ticket is $18, making it a fun and somewhat affordable way to get to Coronado Island. It’s an experience in itself! It’s one of the best-paid things to do in San Diego on a budget.

Mission Bay Park

Mission Bay Park is a San Diego jewel. It is the largest aquatic park of its kind in the US. This sprawling beach park has 19 beaches and miles and miles of shoreline. It’s the place to go for water sports, swimming, hiking, camping, etc. Mission Bay Park seems to have it all. I suggest you start out at the Mission Bay Visitor Center and make your plan from there.

Sunset Cliffs

For some of the best views in San Diego, you must visit Sunset Cliffs. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is located on the western shoreline of Point Loma Peninsula. The gorgeous, rugged shoreline is a draw for locals and out-of-town guests. It’s the perfect spot to watch surfing or for a scenic drive down Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. And while its name suggests it’s a dreamy spot to catch a sunset, you’ll also have stunning views of a sunrise.

So you don’t miss a thing, I recommend GetYourGuide’s self-guided, narrated driving tour of the beaches and bluffs. This four-hour excursion starts north at Point Loma and takes you south along the coastline, stopping at the BEST scenic views in San Diego!

Hiking Trails

Visit Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve in San Diego County for free hiking trails with beautiful views of the nation’s rarest pine trees. Even inexperienced hikers can enjoy the trails at Torrey Pines. Many are less than a mile long and easy to fit into your morning or afternoon.

Another popular spot for hiking is Mission Trails Regional Park. You’ll find everything from easy to difficult trails in this 8,000-acre park. Before starting your hike, stop at the visitor center with a stunning view of Mission Gorge.

With these fun free things, you can make the most of your time in San Diego without worrying about breaking the bank.

Finding affordable accommodations in San Diego

If you’re traveling on a budget, finding affordable accommodations in San Diego is essential. And while a first glance at the hotel prices might send you reeling, there are a variety of budget-friendly options.

Hostels in San Diego

One of the best ways to save money on accommodations is by booking a stay at a hostel. San Diego has several hostels located in popular areas such as the Gaslamp Quarter and Ocean Beach. These hostels offer shared dormitory-style rooms at a fraction of the cost of traditional hotels. Plus, they often have common areas where you can meet fellow travelers and exchange tips and recommendations.

I haven’t stayed in one of San Diego’s hostels, but they come highly recommended and with great reviews. One such is the Samesun Ocean Beach hostel with its fun, eclectic vibe and fabulous location just a short walk from the beach.

If you want to explore the city, the Hi San Diego Downtown is in the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter at a fraction of the cost of hotels in the area. The Hi includes free breakfast and wifi and a variety of accommodation options from super cheap bunk rooms to still affordable private rooms.

Hotels in San Diego

If you prefer a bit more privacy, you can find some great hotels that offer comfortable and clean accommodations at affordable prices, perfect for travelers who want a cozy place to rest after a long day of exploring.

While it will be difficult to find affordable lodging near the beach or in the heart of downtown, if you’re willing to go out a little farther, you can find some great hotels in San Diego on a budget.

One of my favorite places to stay is in Old Town. Not only is it a recommended attraction, but I also highly recommend staying the night there. It’s such a great walkable area! On our last trip, we stayed at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Old Town. Since there were three of us, we either walked and ubered everywhere we needed to go and saved a lot of money on rental car fees and parking.

The Fairfield offers a hot breakfast each day that is delish and a relaxing pool area with a heated pool and hot tub. Their outdoor courtyard is beautiful at night with twinkling lights, lush greenery, and fountains. Our room was very clean, modern, and quiet. And did I mention we got a great rate?! On the Sunday night we were there, our room only cost $129. That’s pretty incredible for San Diego! I will absolutely plan on staying there next time we’re in La Jolla.

Other nice yet affordable hotels in San Diego can be found in Mission Valley and near San Diego Sea World.

Short Term Rental

Another option is to look for vacation rentals or guesthouses. Airbnb and VRBO offer a wide range of options, from private rooms to entire apartments or houses. Not only can these rentals be more cost-effective, but they also offer a home-like experience and cost savings, allowing you to cook your meals and reduce your dining costs.

This is especially helpful if you’re traveling with a group or have an extended stay. Having a private common area to hang out, a full kitchen, and multiple bedrooms really makes the trip so much more relaxing and enjoyable. And splitting the cost with your travel companions can make these rentals surprisingly affordable!

With a little research and planning, finding affordable accommodations in San Diego is completely doable. By saving money on your stay, you’ll have more to spend on the city’s exciting attractions and fabulous food.

Tips on transportation and getting around San Diego

Transportation and parking fees can eat up a significant portion of your budget. Luckily, San Diego is a modern city with plenty of options for transportation, including mass transit, bike rental, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, and, of course, options for ride-share and car rental.

Public Transportation

One of the best ways to navigate the city is by taking advantage of San Diego’s public transportation system. The Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) operates an extensive network of buses and trolleys that can take you to all the major attractions at a fraction of the cost of taxis or ride-sharing services. Plus, the trolley system is a fantastic way to get a scenic tour of the city while getting from point A to point B.

For those who plan to visit multiple attractions throughout the week or explore more distant areas of the city, it may be worth considering a multi-day pass for public transportation. These passes offer unlimited rides on buses and trolleys and can save you money in the long run.

Bike Rental

Another affordable transportation option is biking. San Diego is a bike-friendly city with numerous bike lanes and paths. You can rent a bike from one of the many rental shops located throughout the city. Not only will this save you money on transportation, but it’s also a fantastic way to see the sights and get some exercise in the process.

Walking

If you prefer to explore on foot, you’re in luck. San Diego’s downtown area and many neighborhoods are pedestrian-friendly, with plenty of sidewalks and crosswalks. It’s my favorite way to feel like a local, enjoy the city’s unique vibe, discover hidden gems, and soak up the scenery at my own pace. And it’s the free way to travel in San Diego on a budget.

Ride-Share

Ride-sharing can add up, but we found it quite affordable for most of our excursions. (They price gouge you on those rides from the airport!)

So many of the popular attractions in San Diego are in close proximity to each other, making a lot of our Uber rides only $10-$15 dollars. There were three of us splitting the cost, so this was definitely a cost-effective way to travel! Plus, it allowed us to avoid any parking fees and save quite a bit of time. We could quickly get from point A to point B.

Car Rental

If you’re traveling with a large family or are planning on visiting areas outside of San Diego, like La Jolla Cove or Carlsbad, you’ll probably want to opt for a car rental. When we traveled with our girls, we knew the ride-share prices would be too high, and we wanted a car to be able to tote around food and drinks. We were staying in La Jolla, which also meant that riding the trolley wouldn’t be an easy option.

You can find the best car rental prices with Discover Cars. They’ll negotiate the lowest car rental prices for you. And the prices you’re quoted are the actual cost. There are no hidden taxes or fees, and cancellations are free, as well. It’s the first place I check when I’m looking for a rental car.

Getting around San Diego on a budget is completely doable if you plan ahead and are willing to take advantage of walking in that gorgeous sunny weather.

Free Things to Do in Dallas: Cultural Experiences

Dallas is a treasure trove of cultural experiences that won’t cost you a dime. From world-class art collections to vibrant marketplaces, you can immerse yourself in the cultural richness of the city for free.

Dallas Museum of Art

At the Dallas Museum of Art, located in the Dallas Arts District, you’ll find a vast collection of over 24,000 works from America and around the globe. Entrance is complimentary, so take your time exploring the art that spans 5,000 years of human creativity. While there are paid galleries, there is so much incredible art to see in the free exhibits that I think you’ll leave more than satisfied. It’s one of the best free things to do in Dallas, in my opinion!

If you’re visiting with kids, take advantage of the free family programs and activities, like Wee Wednesdays, Art to Go Tote bags, Arturo’s Library Totes, Open Art Studio, Pop-Up Art Spot, plus other events. This is a very family-friendly museum, and since it’s just a short walk to Clyde Warren Park, you can visit the museum and then take your picnic to the park for a fun family day! 

When you’re planning your visit, make sure you note that they are closed on Mondays. 

Crow Collection of Asian Art

Just a short walk from the Dallas Museum of Art in the Dallas Arts District, the Crow Collection of Asian Art at the University of Texas at Dallas offers a focused but impressive assortment of pieces from China, Japan, India, and Southeast Asia. Admission is free, offering you a window into the intricate art and culture of Asia. This museum offers free admission, while it welcomes donations. 

If you’re visiting with kids, know that this museum doesn’t provide family activities, and might not be as engaging for younger visitors. 

The Crow Collection is open every day except for Mondays. 

The African American Museum

The African American Museum is a treasure located in Dallas Fair Park. This museum is one of a kind in the southwest. It is rich in history, and its mission is to preserve and display this history through African American cultural documents and artifacts. It also has one of the most vast collections of African American folk art on display in the United States. 

This free museum also offers programs, lectures, and field trips, as well as summer art camps for kids and the South Dallas Children’s Choir.  Some special exhibitions and events do cost, and tickets for those events are available online or at the museum.

The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays, so plan accordingly.
