Here are my tried and true tips to make planning your budget travel trip in Europe affordable and feasible: 

Adjust Your Destination: Check Neighboring Countries for the Cheapest Flights

You can save some serious cash by flying into a neighboring country or city. When we first planned our family trip to Germany, we saved hundreds of dollars by flying into Paris. And bonus, we were able to experience two countries! If you’re planning to rent a car and love to explore other places, this is a great option. If, however, you’re relying on train trips and planes, it might not save you much money. Take some time and play around with the routes. 

And you should also check the prices for differing arrival and departure cities. This is a great way to save money, especially if you’re booking flights with points or airmiles. 

Book Budget Accommodations with Kitchens 

This is huge, friends. If you can cook breakfast and pack some lunches, you’ll save 30-50% on food costs. We’re not talking about giving up all the amazing local cuisine – we still typically eat out at least once a day! But making our own breakfast and grabbing groceries for a picnic lunch or dinner frees up money for those nicer meals and treats throughout the week. 

Even if you don’t have a kitchen available, find a hotel or hostel with breakfast included. And you can still grab a supermarket lunch each day to cut down on food expenses. 

Explore Different Ways to Travel Around Europe

Living in Fort Worth, Texas, we have one easy way to get around, and that’s by car. And when I say easy, I actually mean sitting in 10 minutes of traffic just to get out of your neighborhood. So naturally, one of my favorite things to do in other cities is take public transportation. Taking the bus or rail can save you a lot of money versus expensive taxis or other ride-sharing services.

If you’re traveling with a large family or group or are planning to travel through multiple cities or countries, you might consider renting a car. We’re planning to spend a week next summer traveling across Germany and down into Austria, and train tickets for five people would really break our budget. So, in our case, renting a car will be the more affordable way to go and give us the flexibility we need. But it really depends on the number of travelers in your group, where you’re going, and your level of comfort.

Many countries offer city cards that bundle transportation and attraction entry. Do the math before you buy, but often these can save you serious cash, especially if you’re planning to hit multiple museums.

Let me break down the programs that actually deliver value for families, based on the latest rankings and my own research into what works when you’re booking for multiple people.

Best Airline Rewards Programs

Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan (Now Called Atmos Rewards)

Alaska Airlines took the number one spot for best airline rewards program again this year, and for good reason. What makes this program special for families is that you earn miles based on the distance you fly, not how much you spend on your ticket. This is HUGE if you’re booking basic economy to save money – you still earn the same miles as someone in first class. And starting in 2026, you’ll have the option to choose whether you want to earn points based on distance, price paid, or segments flown. This should appeal to both business and economy travelers!

The Atmos Rewards program offers some seriously useful perks once you reach elite status, including free upgrades, checked bags, and same-day flight changes. Plus, Alaska Airlines is part of the oneworld alliance, which means you can earn and redeem miles on partner airlines like American Airlines and British Airways. That flexibility is clutch when you’re trying to find four seats together on the same flight.

And as of October 2025, Hawaiian Airlines has joined the Atmos rewards family and will help you build up those Atmos loyalty points!

United MileagePlus

United jumped to the number two spot last year, and it’s an excellent choice if you live near a United hub. The airline has an absolutely massive route network – over 40 airline partners through the Star Alliance – which gives you tons of options for using your miles.

What I love about United for families: they launched a partnership with JetBlue in late 2025, which will make it even easier to earn and redeem miles on flights your family actually wants to take. Plus, you can use MileagePlus miles for hotel stays with major brands like Marriott, Hyatt, and others, giving you more flexibility in how you redeem.

American Airlines AAdvantage

American Airlines AAdvantage ranks third, and it’s a solid program with access to over 900 destinations through oneworld partners. The program offers loyalty point boosts that help you achieve elite status faster, which can make family travel so much more comfortable with perks like priority boarding and free checked bags.

One tip: if you fly American frequently, those free checked bags alone can save a family of four around $120-$240 per round trip. That adds up fast.

Southwest Rapid Rewards

Now, Southwest didn’t rank in the top three overall, but I have to mention them because they’re phenomenal for families. Southwest has no blackout dates – literally every seat on every flight is available to book with points. And they offer the famous Companion Pass, which lets one person fly free (just paying taxes and fees, usually around $5.60 each way) for up to two years.

For families, this is game-changing. Earn the Companion Pass, and suddenly you’re only paying for three tickets instead of four. Southwest also lets families with children under 6 board early, which makes getting seats together much easier.

Best Hotel Rewards Programs

Choice Privileges

Choice Privileges took the number one spot for hotel rewards programs in 2025, and honestly, I think it’s because they just get it. Choice Hotels operates over 7,400 properties ranging from budget-friendly Econo Lodge to upscale Cambria Hotels, and even includes Radisson properties now.

What makes Choice Privileges great for families is how quickly you can earn a free night. The earning structure is straightforward, and you can reach elite status after just 10 nights, which gets you perks like room upgrades, early check-in, and late checkout. 

Marriott Bonvoy

Marriott Bonvoy is the behemoth of hotel loyalty programs, and while it can be complex, it offers incredible value for families. With 30+ brands and thousands of properties worldwide, you’ve got options for every budget and travel style. It’s the first loyalty program we joined 15 years ago, and we have booked literally dozens of rooms on points.

Here’s what matters for larger families: many Marriott properties offer a 50% second-room discount when kids 16 and under occupy it. (Note: the discount is applied at arrival, not booking, so call the hotel ahead of time to verify they’ll honor it.) Also, when you book on points, the 5th night is always free. We’ve been able to extend many of our vacations by a day because of this perk!  In addition, once you have platinum status, you have access to the lounge, meaning free drinks, snacks, and breakfast during your stay. 

You can also earn Bonvoy points through a co-branded credit card and use those points for everything from budget hotels to luxury resorts. 

Hilton Honors

Hilton Honors covers over 7,000 properties across 22 brands in more than 170 countries. The program offers confirmed connecting rooms (huge for families who need to spread out), mobile check-in to skip lines with impatient kids, and the ability to pool points between family members.

Hilton’s family-friendly brands like Embassy Suites (all-suites, perfect for families) and their all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean make this program especially valuable if you’re planning beach vacations. 

World of Hyatt

World of Hyatt consistently ranks in the top three hotel loyalty programs, and travelers love it for good reason. While Hyatt has fewer properties than Marriott or Hilton, the quality is generally excellent, and the program is incredibly generous with perks.

Hyatt offers some of the best value when you redeem points for hotel stays, and they’re a popular transfer partner for Chase Ultimate Rewards points. If you’re strategic about earning and redeeming, you can score luxury hotel stays at a fraction of the cash price!

How to Actually Maximize These Programs (Without Losing Your Mind)

Okay, so you know which programs are worth joining. Now let’s talk strategy, because just signing up isn’t enough – you need to use these programs intentionally to get real value.

Start with One Flexible Credit Card

The fastest way to rack up enough points for family travel is through credit card sign-up bonuses. Cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred offer substantial welcome bonuses – often 75,000 points or more after you spend a certain amount in the first few months. (I was able to nab a 100k point bonus, so be on the lookout for promotions!)

Here’s why this matters: those 75,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points could cover three nights at a great hotel in a major city, or multiple domestic round-trip flights. That’s not pocket change – that’s a family vacation. You can redeem them 1:1 at hotel and airline transfer partners or on the Chase Travel Portal. They also offer “point boosts” at certain times, so watch for any promotions to get even more bang for your buck.

Use your rewards credit card for everything you’re already buying: groceries, gas, bills, and back-to-school shopping. The points add up quickly, especially if you choose a card that offers bonus earning in categories where your family spends the most.

Focus Your Hotel and Airline Loyalty

Once you’ve got a solid credit card rewards program, pick one airline loyalty program and one hotel loyalty program to focus on. We started with the American Airlines AAdvantage program (we’re near the main hub in DFW) and the Marriott Bonvoy program. This is key – spreading yourself too thin across six different programs means you’ll never earn enough points in any single program to actually redeem for meaningful rewards.

Choose your airline based on which one has the most flights from your home airport. If you live near a Delta hub, Delta SkyMiles makes sense. Near American Airlines? Go with AAdvantage. The goal is to concentrate your earnings so you can actually reach elite status and unlock better perks.

For hotels, if you’re aiming for budget travel, I’d recommend starting with a program like Choice or Hyatt, where you’ll get more bang for your buck. While I love the Marriott program and am very invested in it after 15 years of travel, if I were to start all over, I’d definitely go with Choice or Hyatt. 

Take Advantage of Point Pooling

Several programs allow family members to pool points or miles, which is incredibly useful when you need enough points to book for multiple people. JetBlue and United both allow this for airlines. On the hotel side, Hilton makes pooling super easy with one-to-one transfer ratios.

Some families even set up a strategy where one person’s account becomes the “family bank” – everyone funnels their points there, and that account is used to book family trips. It requires coordination, but it works.

Don’t Ignore Elite Status Benefits

I know, I know – “elite status” sounds pretentious and cringy. But hear me out. Many programs offer their first tier of elite status after just 10-25 nights or flights per year. If your family travels even semi-regularly, you might hit this naturally. And if you have certain travel credit cards, like the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express, they automatically provide you with elite status. 

The perks at even basic elite status levels can make a huge difference in family travel comfort: free checked bags (saving $30-$50 per bag, per person, each way), priority boarding, free upgrades when available, late checkout, and sometimes complimentary breakfast or lounge access. For a family of four taking just three trips a year, those free checked bags alone could save you $1000+ annually.

Book Strategically to Stretch Your Points Further

Not all redemptions are created equal. Sometimes using 50,000 points gets you a $400 hotel stay, while other times it only covers $200 worth of value. Learning to evaluate redemption values helps you maximize what you’ve earned.

Also, be flexible when possible. Traveling during off-peak times often requires fewer points for the same flights or hotel stays. You can often get great deals for “business” hotels on weekends when the demand is lower, while “tourist” hotels often offer lower rates on Sunday-Thursday evenings.

Award availability for families of four can sometimes be challenging during peak seasons, but if you can shift your travel to shoulder season, you’ll find better options and often need fewer points to book.

My Top Tips for Getting Started

If you’re new to this whole world, start simple:

Month One: Sign up for one travel rewards credit card with a good sign-up bonus. Make sure you can comfortably meet the minimum spending requirement. Enroll your entire family in your chosen airline loyalty program and sign one of the grownups up for a hotel loyalty program (or both if they offer family points poolings).

Month Two: Start using that credit card for all purchases you’d normally make anyway. Don’t change your spending habits just to earn points – that defeats the purpose. The goal is to earn rewards on spending you’re already doing. And be sure you pay that credit card off at the end of the month! If you’re accruing interest on that credit card, it totally defeats the purpose of budget rewards travel. 

Month Three: By now, you should have earned your sign-up bonus. Start researching how to redeem those points for your next family trip. If you need more points, see if they offer a referral bonus, and have your partner or spouse sign up and rake in some points, too!

Common Questions I Hear All the Time

“Do points expire?” Most programs require some activity every 12-18 months to keep points from expiring, but this is easy to avoid. Make one purchase with a co-branded credit card, book one flight, or stay one night at a hotel in that loyalty program, and your points stay active.

“Can my kids earn their own points?” Absolutely! Children can have their own frequent flyer accounts and hotel loyalty accounts from birth. They won’t earn points through credit cards until they’re 18, but any flights they take or hotel stays under their name can earn them points.

“What if I don’t have enough points for everyone?” You don’t have to book everything with points. We often use a hybrid approach – book three tickets with miles and pay cash for the other two, or use points for hotels and pay cash for flights. Even covering part of your trip with rewards significantly reduces out-of-pocket costs.

Look for hotels in business districts of major cities – they’re usually well-maintained but desperate for weekend guests.

Bonus tip: Book Sunday night stays for extra savings, as these are typically the slowest nights for hotels.

2. Join Hotel Loyalty Programs

Don’t wait until you’ve planned multiple trips – sign up before your first stay. Even basic memberships often include:

• Free WiFi (saving $12-15 per day)
• Late checkout options
• Points on every stay
• Member-exclusive rates
• Room upgrade eligibility
• Gain access to lounges after earning status

For example, Hilton Honors members can use a digital key through their app, choose their exact room, and often get free breakfast even at hotels that typically charge.

3. Request Corner Rooms

Corner rooms typically offer 20-30% more space than standard rooms and are typically quieter, due to being farther away from elevators. 

These rooms often feature extra windows and better views, plus they share fewer walls with neighbors – perfect for families worried about noise. Some corner rooms even have space for a rollaway bed without feeling cramped.

You may have to pay extra for the corner room, but if you’re part of a hotel loyalty program, you may receive the upgraded room for free. You can request the room when you call to book or ask if they have one available when you’re checking in. 

4. Pack Magnetic Hooks

These inexpensive magnetic hooks (usually under $10 for a pack) can transform your room’s storage capabilities. They work on any metal surface, including most hotel room doors, air conditioning units, and fridges. You can use them for:

• Creating a drying station for swimsuits and towels
• Hanging backpacks and purses
• Organizing outerwear 

5. Bring a Portable Sound Machine

A compact sound machine can be the difference between a good night’s sleep and a disaster. Even if you don’t sleep with one at home, you’ll want to drown out any road or hallway noise. Choose one that:

• Runs on batteries or USB power
• Offers multiple sound options (white noise, rain, fan sounds)
• Is lightweight (under 1 pound)

Pro tip: Download a backup white noise app on your phone as a backup. I love the White Noise Ambience Lite app! It’s free and has tons of sounds to choose from. 

6. Use Packing Cubes as Drawer Organizers

Transform standard hotel drawers into organized spaces for each family member:

• Use different colored cubes for each person
• Designate specific cubes for types of clothing (swim gear, pajamas, etc.)
• Keep one empty cube for dirty laundry
• Use smaller cubes for socks and underwear

7. Request a Mini-Fridge and Microwave

Most hotels provide fridges and microwaves free in the rooms, but some only provide them upon request. 

• Request during booking AND confirm at check-in
• Confirm the fridge has a freezer section before buying cartons of ice cream (ask me how I know)
• Check that it’s plugged in and cooling BEFORE stocking it with groceries. We once filled a hotel fridge, without realizing that it had been unplugged. All of our groceries were ruined by the time we realized it the following day. 
• Money-saving strategy: Stock breakfast items (think yogurt, boiled eggs, instant oatmeal), snacks (string cheese, carrot sticks, fruit), and drinks from a local grocery store. A family of four can easily save $20-30 daily on beverages alone!

8. Choose Rooms Away From Noise

When booking, specifically request rooms away from:

• Ice machines (constant motor noise and late-night ice-getters)
• Elevators (ding sounds and guest chatter)
• Housekeeping stations (early morning cart noise)
• Vending areas (late-night snackers)
• Pool/fitness center (early morning swimmers/workout enthusiasts)
• Ask for a room between the 3rd and 6th floors – high enough to avoid street noise but low enough for quick stair access if needed! I love those top floors but ever tried to make it down 12 flights of stairs with kids in tow during a fire alarm? Me neither, and I really don’t want to. 

9. Pack a Streaming Stick

Bring either a Roku, Fire Stick, or Chromecast for TV entertainment options. You never know what kind of tv the room will have and if there are any streaming options available. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be stuck watching a Sponge Bob marathon on Cartoon Network.

• Load it with your subscriptions and log in to the streaming platforms before leaving home
• Bring an HDMI extension cord if you have one (sometimes hotel TV ports are hard to reach)

10. Bring a Power Strip

If you’re traveling with older kids and teens, pack a compact power strip with USB ports for charging multiple devices:

• Look for one with at least 3 outlets and 2-3 USB ports
• Position it on the desk or nightstand for easy access This prevents arguments over charging priority and makes sure all your devices are charged and ready for the next day. 

11. Pack Night Lights

If your kiddos are used to sleeping with a nightlight, don’t forget to pack one or two. 

• Consider battery-operated ones (no outlet hunting needed)
• Place one in the bathroom- hotel bathrooms are extra dark since there are typically no windows. Instead of blinding yourself with the overhead light or running into cabinets in the pitch black, keep a dim nightlight plugged in. 

12. Request Late Checkout

Maximize your final day by requesting a late checkout:

• Ask during check-in AND the night before departure
• Typical free extensions: 1-2 hours
• Loyalty members often get until 2 pm or later for free (Marriott Bonvoy gives us 4 pm late check-out!)
• Some hotels offer half-day rates for even later departures– perfect for families with naptime schedules or afternoon flights!

13. Use Grocery Delivery Services

Take advantage of delivery services to stock your room:

• Instacart or local grocery delivery (order before arrival)
• Amazon Fresh in major cities
• Target/Walmart delivery for snacks and supplies
• Common items to order:
  • Breakfast foods (cereal, milk, fruit, yogurt, boiled eggs)
  • Sandwich supplies, cut-up veggies, and chips for quick lunches
  • Individual snack packs 
  • Juice boxes and water bottles 

14. Pack a Collapsible Cooler

A soft-sided collapsible cooler (this one folds completely flat!) serves multiple purposes:

• Use for extra souvenir space during travel home
• Store drinks and lunch for picnics, beach days, etc. 
• Keep damp swimsuits and towels separate from other luggage

Size recommendation: 16-24 quart capacity fits easily in luggage when collapsed but holds enough for a family of four.

15. Take Advantage of Hotel Laundry Rooms

Self-service laundry can be a trip-saver when you’re trying to pack light. Especially if you have messy kids! 

• Pack travel-size detergent pods or laundry sheets
• Bring quarters or check if machines take cards
• Ask about peak usage times to avoid crowds
• Pack a pop-up mesh laundry hamper 
• In a pinch, the hotel sink works great for small loads! And those magnetic hooks I mentioned earlier will help with hanging and drying wet clothes!

16. Ask About Baby Gear

Hotels often provide more than just cribs. A few items you may find at your hotel include:

• Playpens or full-size cribs
• High chairs for in-room dining
• Strollers (less likely but becoming more popular)
• Baby-proofing kits
• Kid snacks

Just be sure to call ahead to reserve items – they’re often first-come, first-served.

17. Book Hotels with Free Breakfast

Maximize the free breakfast benefit:

• Check breakfast hours and arrive early
• Grab fruit, yogurt, or packaged items for snacks
• If you’re a hotel loyalty member, you may have access to the lounge with breakfast included. 

Average hotel breakfast costs $15-20 per person, so this can be a huge savings!

18. Create a Mini Kitchen Setup

If you’re planning to eat meals in a regular hotel room, you’ll want to pack a few things. Essential items for your hotel room kitchen:

• Collapsible silicone bowls
• Paper plates
• Reusable travel utensils or plastic ware
• Zip-top bags for sandwiches and snacks on-the-go
• Two-in-one compact can opener and bottle opener
• Paper towels
• Travel-sized dish soap

19. Bring a Roll of Painters Tape

No, we’re not redecorating the hotel rooms…the people on the internet have found tons of uses for painter’s tape that you might have not even thought of! 

• Use it for baby proofing:  cover outlets, tape drawers closed, tape up dangling cords, etc.
• Block out light: Put a strip of tape along the crack in the door and frame to block out light, tape curtains closed, cover annoying lights from clocks and electronics, etc
• Seal bags of chips and snacks
• Remove lint from clothing
• Use it to create games like hopscotch

Painter’s tape doesn’t leave sticky residue- that’s why it’s our tape of choice. Bring at least one roll on your next trip. 

20. Pack Door Stoppers

Stick a couple of these in your bag. Multiple uses for rubber door stoppers:

• Extra security for the main door
• Hold connecting doors open during family time
• Prop main door while moving luggage
• Keep bathroom door from slamming
• Improve air circulation

21. Bring Compact Games

Create a portable entertainment kit for the kids to keep them entertained in the hotel room:

• Card games (Uno, Skip-Bo, regular playing cards)
• Travel-sized board games
• Magnetic games that won’t lose pieces
• Coloring books and crayons
• Small LEGO sets in zip-top bags or travel Lego case

Organization tip: Use plastic pencil cases to create individual activity kits for each child.

22. Use Shower Caps for Shoes

Creative uses for those free hotel shower caps:

• Cover muddy shoes in suitcases
• Wrap wet swimsuits for travel
• Protect electronics from spills
• Cover TV remote (germ protection)

Ask housekeeping for extra caps – they’re usually happy to provide them.

23. Request Kid-Specific Amenities

Some hotels (especially upscale, resort properties, or hotels near theme parks) offer special perks for kids if you ask:

The best hotel we stayed at wasn’t fancy. But it was right next to the subway station in DC! We couldn’t have asked for better! Benefits of transit-friendly locations:

• Save $30-50 daily on parking fees
• Avoid rental car costs ($50+ daily)
• Easy access to attractions
• No traffic or navigation stress
• Often near restaurants and shops

Pro Tip: Research the area’s transit passes for families – many offer multi-day discounts or free transit for children.

25. Bring Your Own Microfiber Towels 

Some hotels will charge you if the hotel room towels become stained. You can avoid this by bring a couple of microfiber towels from home that you can use for:

• Makeup removal
• Nosebleeds, cuts, etc.
• Messy spills
• Muddy shoes

Save the bath towels for bathing, so you’re not stuck paying exorbitant replacement fees. Stash one of these easy-to-pack travel microfibers instead. 

26. Pack Clothespins or Binder Clips

Stash a few clothespins or binder clips in your luggage for uses like:

• Closing the annoying gap in the drapes
• Closing open bags of snacks
• Hang multiple wet swimsuits on closet hangers

27. Pack Travel Sized Disinfectant Spray

Before your kiddos grab the remote, pull out that travel-sized Lysol or Clorox spray, and disinfect it. The same goes for any other surfaces or things in the room, that might not be regularly cleaned, like chairs, clock radios, drawer handles, etc. 

28. Create Makeshift Bed Rails with Rolled Towels

Traveling with wiggly preschoolers? You don’t need to pack bulky bed rails to keep your little one from rolling off the bed. Instead, ask for extra towels that you can roll up and wedge under the fitted sheet. It’s easy, saves luggage space, and is free.

Here are some booking strategies that can help elevate your next hotel stay:

• Call the hotel directly after finding the best online rate and see if they can beat it

• Confirm all special requests in writing

Extra Money-Saving Hotel Hacks for Families:

Here are a few extra tips that can help stretch your hotel budget:

• Sign up for hotel email newsletters for exclusive deals. Hotels will often offer extra points, free bonus nights, and other big savings! 
• Book refundable rates and check prices again closer to stay. This has saved me so much money! I’ll sometimes cancel and rebook 5-10 times before a stay, as the prices fluctuate so much. 
• Use cashback sites for booking. Some of my favorites are Rakuten, Capitol One, and Ibotta.
• Stack credit card rewards with hotel points. (Note: A travel rewards credit card is only worth it if you pay it off each month!)
• Check AAA, AARP, or military discounts, if applicable. (Note: Anyone can sign up for AARP! It’s $20 a year to join, but you can save a lot on

You can spend multiple days in Downtown Chicago enjoying all the free things it has to offer. Here are some of the top spots in the heart of the city: 

Millennium Park and “The Bean”

 Start your adventure at Millennium Park in Downtown Chicago, home to the iconic Cloud Gate (more famously known as “The Bean”). This massive mirrored sculpture reflects the city’s stunning skyline and creates the perfect photo op. Pro tip: visit at sunrise for the best photos and the smallest crowds. In summer, cool off in Crown Fountain’s playful water displays; in winter, watch skaters glide across the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink against a backdrop of twinkling lights. Or just grab a blanket and enjoy a picnic in the gorgeous green space of Millennium Park.

Magnificent Mile

Just steps away from Millennium Park, the Magnificent Mile beckons. While the luxury shops might tempt your wallet, the real treasure is free: looking up. The historic Water Tower, the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower, and the soaring John Hancock Center tell Chicago’s story through architecture. Clarence F. Buckingham Memorial Fountain

One of the largest fountains in the world is right in the heart of Downtown Chicago. If you’re able to visit in the evening after dusk you’re in for an even bigger treat with the accompanying lights and music. 

Willis Tower (Famously Known as the Sears Tower)

For 25 years, the Sears Tower was the tallest building in the world. While admission to its observation deck does cost, it’s still worth a visit to view this iconic skyscraper from the street. 

Free Things to Do On the Chicago Waterfront 

Chicago is a waterfront city with Lake Michigan to the east and the Chicago River winding through it. And water always brings lots of free activities that are fun for the whole family:

Chicago Riverwalk

Chicago’s relationship with water defines its character, starting with the award-winning Chicago Riverwalk. It’s your free ticket to experience the city’s connection to water. This 1.25-mile promenade offers some of the city’s best views and people-watching opportunities. In summer, catch free concerts and watch boats glide by; in winter, marvel at the river’s steam rising against the cold air while enjoying the Art on theMART light show. And there are plenty of spots to grab a drink or a bite along the Riverwalk. 

Navy Pier

One of the top attractions in Chicago, the Navy Pier offers free entrance and walking areas. (The rides and attractions do cost, so if you’re bringing kids, expect to spend some money or deal with some tears.) South Shore Nature Sanctuary

North of Rainbow Beach in the South Shore neighborhood lies the 6 acres of natural area that include a beach, dunes, a pond, wetland, woodland, prairie, savanna, and shrubland habitats. It’s not a traditional beach but is the perfect beach option for those looking to enjoy the water and native ecosystems. 

Grant Park

Grant Park, “Chicago’s Front Yard” hosts free festivals and events on its 319 acres of green along Lake Michigan. It’s the perfect place to spend the day walking or relaxing. 

Promontory Point

Promontory Point, or “the Point”,  is a man-made peninsula offering some of the best skyline views of the city. It’s famously known as the location of Barack and Michelle Obama’s first kiss and is a popular spot for weddings and other events. The park is beautiful for relaxing or picnicking and in the warmer months, lake access allows swimming and other water activities. 

Museum Campus

Located in Grant Park, the Museum Campus is its own destination. It’s home to the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, and the Adler Planetarium. While the museums charge admission, the campus grounds are free to explore and offer beautiful views along Lake Michigan. And for Illinois residents, you can find free admission to the museums on specific days!

Lake Michigan Beaches

Chicago’s lakefront features 24 free public beaches spread along its impressive 26-mile shoreline along Lake Michigan. Each beach has its own character and these are our top picks: 

North Avenue Beach

The city’s most popular beach features an ocean liner-inspired beach house, exceptional skyline views, and free volleyball courts. It’s also a prime spot for watching the Air and Water Show in August. At North Avenue Beach you’ll find spots for eats and drinks, as well as bike and jet ski rentals.

Oak Street Beach

Nestled right next to downtown, this beach offers the surreal experience of swimming with skyscrapers as your backdrop. With eating options nearby and lifeguards on site, you can truly relax and enjoy a day on the water.

Montrose Beach

The largest beach in Chicago includes a dog-friendly area and quiet bird sanctuary, plus other amenities such as wi-fi, a boat launch, restrooms, showers, jet ski rentals, fishing, volleyball courts, kayak rentals, kiteboarding, and a full-service restaurant and bar.

57th Street Beach

A local favorite in Hyde Park, perfect for escaping tourist crowds.

Time your visit right, and you might catch the Chinese New Year parade or the Mid-Autumn Festival – both free and fantastically colorful celebrations.

Little Italy

The Little Italy neighborhood offers history and architecture, plus incredible food. Stroll down the streets and admire the gorgeous churches and buildings from the 1800s. You can wander the 100-year-old Maxwell Street Market every Sunday. The Little Italy Festival takes place in August and celebrates the rich history of the neighborhood. Also, you can 

Chicago Greeter Program

If you’re looking for a free guided tour, you’re in for a treat! Chicago offers free tours through the Chicago Greeter Program. They accommodate up to 6 guests and are completely free of charge. Expect a 2-4 hour tour with a Chicago local who will walk you through the history of the neighborhood of your choice. You must register ahead of time here.

If you didn’t make a reservation ahead of time, you can catch one of the free Instagreeter Downtown tours at the Chicago Loop or the Riverwalk. 

Smart Museum of Art

The Smart Museum of Art is located at the University of Chicago and is free every day for all visitors. It’s a smaller museum and won’t take a full day, but if you’re in the area, it’s a fabulous way to spend an hour or two at this thought-provoking gallery. 

National Museum of Mexican Art

The National Museum of Mexican Art houses one of the largest collections of Mexican art in the country. The museum and collection of art are both vibrant and rich in culture and history and will interest both adults and kids, with its ancient artifacts to its contemporary art. It’s a fabulous free art museum in Chicago!

National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture

The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture is located in Humboldt Park and is the only museum in the United States that is solely dedicated to Puerto Rican art and culture. It truly is a one-of-a-kind museum and is free to visit every day. 

Mind Works

Mind Works isn’t your typical museum, It’s an active research center and lab where visitors can take part in research studies as they interactively learn all about how the mind works. It’s located just three blocks south of “the Bean” in Downtown Chicago, making it an easy stop to add during your Downtown adventures. Admission is always free. 

National Veterans Art Museum

The National Veterans Art Museum is located in Portage Park features stunning and thought-provoking art created by Veterans. The museum serves to help visitors experience and connect with war and military service through the art pieces. 

Museum of Contemporary Photography

Located at Columbia College Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Photography features over 16,000 pieces and is considered the top university photographic art museum in the world. Admission is always free and you can also attend special events and lectures for free, as well. 

Hyde Park Art Center

The Hyde Park Art Center features contemporary art by Chicago artists, with a special focus on promoting women and artists of color and helping them launch their artistic careers. The Art Center also offers “pay what you can” art classes, making art accessible to everyone in the community. 

Jane Addams Hull-House Museum

Since 1889, the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum has been open to visitors. It’s located on the University of Illinois Chicago campus and offers free admission for everyone. It’s a memorial to social activist Jane Addams, the first American Nobel Peace Prize recipient, who was a fierce advocate for social reformation. The Hull House Museum is a National Historic Landmark that has been beautifully preserved. 

Clarke House Museum

The Clarke House Museum was built in 1836 and is the oldest surviving house in Chicago. It has survived a fire and relocations and has been beautifully preserved for the public. It is now located in Prairie Avenue Historic District and is open for free public tours. 

Free Museum Days for Chicago Residents

If you’re a Chicago resident, you’re in luck! Many of the paid-entry Chicago museums offer free admission on certain days, including the Shedd Aquarium, Field Museum, Chicago History Museum, Adler Planetarium, Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago Children’s Museum, and more! 

Chicago Urban Nature

As a first-time visitor to Chicago, I was shocked by the plethora of outdoor and nature activities in and around nation’s third-largest city. 

Northerly Island

Northerly Island, a 91-acre peninsula alongside the Museum Campus, is Chicago’s hidden natural gem. Once an airport, it’s now a prairie restoration project offering spectacular skyline views and wildlife spotting opportunities. In spring, watch for migrating butterflies; in winter, spot snowy owls against the urban backdrop. It also offers some of the most picturesque views of Downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan.

Lincoln Park Zoo

The Lincoln Park Zoo remains one of the last zoos in the country that offer free admission, and it’s open 365 days a year. Watch polar bears swim, gorillas play, and lions lounge – all without spending a dime. During winter, the free ZooLights transform the grounds into a magical light display (though some special events during this time may charge admission).

Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary

Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary is touted as one of the best places in the world for bird watching. Bring your binoculars and arrive early to this nature escape. It’s located in Lincoln Park near the shores of Lake Michigan.

Garfield Park Conservatory

The Garfield Park Conservatory takes up 12 acres and has stunning indoor and outdoor gardens. If you’re looking to visit a botanic garden without spending a dime, this is the one for you. 

Lincoln Park Conservatory

Enjoy free admission to Lincoln Park Conservatory every day, as you step into a blooming wonderland in the middle of Chicago. While free to enter, you do need to reserve a timed entry ticket.

Free Things to Do in Chicago Every Season

Spring (March-May)

Spring awakens Chicago with free cultural events. The Chicago Cultural Center hosts free concerts and exhibitions as cherry blossoms paint Jackson Park pink. While Spring can still be quite frigid, you can still enjoy some time in nature with bird watching at Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary or fishing on Lake Michigan for Brown Trout, Steelhead, and Coho Salmon. 

Summer (June-August)

Summer is when Chicago truly shines. The Grant Park Music Festival offers free classical concerts under the stars at the Pritzker Pavilion. Movies in the Parks brings free outdoor screenings to neighborhood parks, while countless street festivals celebrate the city’s diverse communities. Millennium Park’s summer programming includes free live music, dance performances, and workout classes. 

You can also enjoy the dog days of summer lazying around at one of the many beaches on Lake Michigan. Between building sand castles, swimming, beach volleyball, and more there’s something for everyone. You can also find some Free beach yoga classes on the weekends. 

Summer is also the best time for a salmon run. Some of the best spots are at the Lincoln Park Lagoon or Jackson Park Inner and Outer Harbors. 

Fall (September-November)

Autumn brings Open House Chicago, offering free access to normally private architectural treasures. Park trails burst with fall colors, and Halloween transforms Navy Pier into a family-friendly spooky celebration. The Chicago Architecture Biennial (when scheduled) offers free exhibitions and events.

While too cold for swimming, you can still enjoy Lake Michigan activities, like beach combing for sea glass or fishing for large lake trout. 

Winter (December-February)

Chicago embraces winter with free ice skating (bring your own skates) at Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park’s ribbon. The Cultural Center becomes an especially welcome haven, offering warmth, beautiful architecture, and free events. ZooLights and holiday displays throughout downtown create magical evening walks. The Harold Washington Library Center welcomes visitors to explore its nine floors, including a beautiful winter garden atrium on the top floor. You can also find lots of free entry days to museums in the winter months. 

If you want to brave the frigid temps, you can experience the magic of a Chicago winter with its ice formations along the shore, winter bird watching, or winter surfing (or better yet, surfer watching )

Why Do I Need a Travel Budget Planner?

Maybe you’ve been traveling for years without a travel budget planner, and you wonder why start using one now? And if you’re staying on budget during your travels, then great! It sounds like you’re doing fine and you can skip on by. But if you’re like me, and not tallying up those daily purchases have you blowing your budget at the end of the week, then you need a travel budget planner.

• Transportation (flights, rental cars, ride share, or train tickets)
• Places to stay (hotels, vacation rentals, or hostels)
• Daily expenses (meals, activities, and souvenirs)
• A small emergency fund (because life happens, even on vacation!)

If you love Excel Spreadsheets, here’s a fabulous free one from Kwantlen Polytechnic University. You can estimate your expenses and then use the same spreadsheet to track your actual vacation expenses. 

Pro tip: Add about 15% to your initial estimate as a buffer. If you don’t end up needing it, great – you’ve got extra spending money or can set the extra money aside for your next trip!

Here’s a secret that successful savers know: automation is your best friend. Set up a new account you can designate as your “vacation fund” and arrange automatic transfers for every payday. Even small amounts add up – $50 per week becomes $2,600 in a year! Think of it as paying your future self first. This is a key step of your vacation savings plan!

Saving For Your Next Trip with a Travel Savings Account

 Having a separate account will make it easier to track and know exactly how much you need to save. Plus, getting your travel fund out of your checking account will help you avoid spending it and help you reach your savings goal faster! Just make sure you know the rules for your bank or credit union.

Some traditional savings accounts and high-yield savings accounts charge monthly if you don’t maintain a minimum balance. You don’t want to throw your hard-earned money away, so look for accounts that are free or have the lowest fees. • Love writing? Try freelancing.
• Good with social media? Many small businesses need help managing their social media accounts.
• Enjoy teaching? There are always openings for virtual tutoring.
• Have homemade or used items to sell? List them on Etsy, eBay, or FB Marketplace.
• Got time to chill? Even online surveys during your Netflix time can add up to a little vacation money.
• Have any digital products or services you can sell? The digital marketplace is huge and even selling $2 digital downloads add up!

Your community is full of opportunities to build up your savings:

• Pet sitting or dog walking can be a rewarding way to earn extra cash (plus, puppy cuddles!)

• Transform your green thumb into green bills by selling at farmers’ markets or craft fairs. Not so green thumb? Sell handmade wares, art, soap, jewelry, etc. It’s a time-consuming but simple way to make a few hundred dollars on the side. 
• Offer babysitting on weekends or holidays. You can set up a babysitting profile at Care.com or advertise on a local mom’s Facebook group. 
• Schools are always in need of substitute teachers! If you have a flexible daytime schedule, this is a great way to give back to the community while earning some side cash.
• Donating plasma might sound painful but it comes with its benefits! Not only are you providing life-giving plasma for those in your community who desperately need it, but you can bring in a few extra hundred dollars a month! (Must pass a medical screening and meet certain qualifications as a donor.)

The Sharing Economy

You’d be surprised what people will pay to borrow:

• That parking spot you’re not using
• The tools and equipment gathering dust in your garage. Not everyone wants to buy a jackhammer, trailer, or pressure washer. If you’ve got one, rent it out on Facebook Marketplace or on the Rent My Equipment app.
• An office you can lease out for weekend or evening appointments. 
• A car you don’t need all the time. Turo is surprisingly simple and safe for renting out your car
• Musical instruments stashed under your bed. Beginners often don’t want to pay for a brand-new one but would love to try out a quality instrument.
• Luxury pieces of clothing and accessories. Use Tulerie to lend out those gorgeous items just sitting in your closet. You’ll feel good about making a little money while justifying that pricey purchase in the first place. 
• Your grounded watercraft. Got a boat, kayaks, or jet skis? Then you’ve got potential money just sitting there!
• That camper or pop-up parked out front. Many people would love to try a camper without committing to owning their own. You can easily list yours on AirBnB.

Timing Is Everything

Being flexible with your travel dates can save hundreds on travel. For example, traveling to Europe in February instead of July could cut your costs by 30% or more. Plus, you’ll deal with fewer crowds and get a more authentic experience. 

Personal Note: I know this is tricky when you’ve got kids in school. You might feel tied down to the school calendar, but as a former teacher, I’m telling you to take the vacation if you can. Your child will learn so much more from the experience than from a week of sitting behind a desk.

While this is harder when your kids are in high school, most teachers I know are willing to work with your child if you communicate well and make a plan for getting schoolwork accomplished. What will your child remember when they’re an adult? That overseas vacation or that week of learning about aerobic respiration in Biology class?

Points and Miles Magic

Make your regular spending work harder for you:

• Use a travel rewards credit card for everyday purchases (but always pay it off monthly!) We rarely pay for hotels. Our Marriott credit cards have earned us countless free hotel stays and upgrades simply with everyday spending. I’ve also paid for 3 trips to Europe on points alone. If you’re already spending the money, you might as well make it work for you in the form of free travel!
• Join airline and hotel loyalty programs to earn status, and upgrades and accrue points toward free travel. 
• Shop through airline or hotel shopping portals for things you’re spending money on anyway. You’ll earn some airline miles or points on purchases made at restaurants and online retailers.

Nature’s Playground: NC Hiking and Waterfalls

Hendersonville’s surrounding natural beauty is a TREASURE TROVE of free family fun. Pack some snacks, lace up those hiking boots, and get ready for adventure!

Jump Off Rock

Jump Off Rock, located in Laurel Park and adjacent to Hendersonville, offers one of the most stunning panoramic views in Western North Carolina. This free scenic overlook, perched at 3,100 feet, provides visitors with breathtaking vistas of the Blue Ridge and Pisgah mountain ranges.

Easily accessible by car, it features short walking trails and picnic areas, making it perfect for families and nature enthusiasts. Jump Off Rock is an ideal spot for watching sunsets, enjoying a picnic, or simply taking in the natural beauty of the region.

DuPont State Forest

Just a short drive from Hendersonville, DuPont State Recreational Forest is a paradise for waterfall enthusiasts and hikers of all levels. It’s one of our top recommended things to do in Hendersonville, NC!

Hooker Falls

 An easy 1/4-mile walk from the parking lot leads to a wide, gentle waterfall. It’s great for younger kids and offers a nice swimming hole in warmer months. Hooker Falls was featured in the movie The Last of the Mohicans and is named after a local man Edmund Hooker who owned and operated a mill at the bottom of the falls. 

Triple Falls

 If you’re a Hunger Games fan, you won’t want to miss Triple Falls! The falls are the setting for where Katniss finds Peeta camouflaged among the rocks after being wounded.

This moderate 3-mile round trip hike from the parking lot near Hooker Falls rewards you with views of three cascading waterfalls. It’s a great spot for taking a picnic and enjoying the view along the hike or at the waterfalls. 

High Falls

A bit more challenging, this 1.2-mile round trip hike offers spectacular views of a 150-foot waterfall, the largest in DuPont National Forest. You can access High Falls from a trail connecting to the High Falls Visitor Center or continue up the trail at Triple Falls.

Tip: Visit on weekdays or early mornings to avoid crowds, especially during summer.

Pisgah National Forest

Another gem near Hendersonville, Pisgah National Forest offers more natural wonders:

Looking Glass Falls

Easily accessible right from the roadside, the picturesque 60-foot Looking Glass Falls is perfect for families with small children or those with limited mobility.

Sliding Rock

A natural water slide that’s fun for older kids and adults alike. There’s a small fee to enter the Sliding Rock recreation area during peak season (Memorial Day to Labor Day), but it’s well worth it for the unique experience. The water is quite cold, so be prepared with a dry change of clothes!

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

Combine history and nature at the former home of poet Carl Sandburg:

• Visit the grounds and farm for free
• Five miles of hiking trails suited for various skill levels
• Kids will love the goat farm where kids can see the descendants of Mrs. Sandburg’s award-winning herd! You can pet and interact with the goats. 
• Tours of the historic home ($10 entrance for adults, $6 for 62 and older, free for children under 15)

Park It: Local Green Spaces

Hendersonville’s beautiful local parks offer free outdoor activities and fun for the whole family. Pack a picnic and spend the day enjoying one of these local green spaces. 

Jackson Park

212 acres of natural beauty with ADA-aware playgrounds, Jackson Park also features walking trails, basketball courts, disc golf, picnic areas, and more! It’s western North Carolina’s largest municipal park. 

Patton Park

Patton Park features a swimming pool operated by the YMCA (with a small entry fee), a playground, a skate park, racquetball, athletic courts, playing fields, and walking trails with greenbelt access.   

The Park at Flat Rock

The Park at Flat Rock is a newer ADA-aware park with a natural playground, walking trails, and a tranquil pond.

Downtown Delights: Exploring Hendersonville’s Heart

 The town of Hendersonville’s Main Street is a charming destination filled with free and low-cost activities for all ages. You can’t visit Hendersonville without spending some time in its idyllic downtown area.

Historic Main Street Hendersonville

Spend a day window shopping and people-watching along the historic Main Street. I love to wander around Main Street with an iced latte from Black Bear Coffee while I browse the shops and boutiques.

You’ll find a variety of shops to pique everyone’s interest, including a General Store, apothecary, pet store, toy store, craft vendor market, resale shops, apparel boutiques, art studios, jewelry store, and other specialty shops. If your stomach starts to rumble, you’re in luck– you’ll find an assortment of dining and drink options along Main Street.

Hands On! Children’s Museum

If you’re looking for things to do in Hendersonville with the kids, you won’t want to miss the interactive and engaging exhibits at Hands On! It’s a favorite attraction for kids. You can find reduced admission through the Museums for All Initiative for certain eligible guests, first Friday Nights where admission is $1, as well as daily military discounts. Or if you’ll be returning at least 3 times, consider a membership! 

Mineral and Lapidary Museum

If you have some free time, this small, unassuming museum is worth checking out. The Mineral and Lapidary Museum offers free admission to see fossils, gems, and minerals, as well as touch a fossilized dinosaur egg nest and view an actual leg bone from a wooly mammoth! 

Appalachian Pinball Museum

If you love playing games, the Pinball Museum is the place for you! For a $13 flat fee you can play more than 80 games all day! From classic pinball games to other favorite video games, this is a family-friendly favorite for all ages. You can also purchase sodas and snacks for $1, making this a super budget-friendly activity.

Team ECCO Aquarium & Shark Lab

A budget-friendly and educational aquarium experience in Downtown Hendersonville, Team ECCO Aquarium and Shark Lab was actually the first inland aquarium in North Carolina. It’s only open a few hours a week, so be sure and check their website for current hours. Admission is with military ID and discounted rates for military family members teachers / EMTs/ Police/ Fire. 

Art MoB Studios and Marketplace

Enjoy the incredible work by local artists at the Art MoB. From handcrafted jewelry to textiles to paintings, you’ll find an intriguing assortment of art for purchase. You can also pop in some of the artists’ on-site studios and experience their work firsthand. While I would hesitate to bring very young or rambunctious kids in, my older girls really enjoyed our visit. 

Sweet Treats and Eats

No family outing is complete without some delicious food, and Hendersonville definitely delivers. Here are a few of our budget-friendly favorites that you don’t want to miss:

HenDough

HenDough takes donuts to a whole new level. They’re totally drool-worthy. This local favorite serves up unique donut flavors and fried chicken biscuits and sandwiches, plus much more 7 days a week. Try their creme brule donut for a sweet, delectable treat or their homemade hot chicken biscuit for a spicy, savory breakfast. I’m pretty sure we visited 4 times in one week. It’s that good. 

Whit’s Frozen Custard

Creamier than ice cream and oh-so-delicious. Whit’s is another of our absolute favorites. As in we went there 5 times in one week so good! Choose from classic vanilla or chocolate, a special flavor each day, or their flavor of the week. Eat it plain or choose your favorite mix-ins or toppings. We are hooked!

Moe’s Original Barbeque

I might be a vegetarian now, but that doesn’t mean I don’t recognize some good BBQ. And Moe’s has it all. They have so many delicious sides to choose from, which makes my vegetarian daughter and myself really, really happy. And our party tried 4 different kinds of meat and they raved about it all. And while BBQ isn’t cheap, my big kids were able to share a meal and left feeling full. 

White Duck Taco Shop

This Texas girl loves her tacos and the White Duck Taco Shop didn’t disappoint. We shared chips and queso and tried a few different tacos and it was good stuff. They offer some really unique flavors, so come hungry and try a few. Plus their sangrias are super tasty, too!

Southern Appalachian Brewery

This family-friendly brewery is a hit for adults and kids. Adults can enjoy the brewery offerings while kids have ample space to run and play. And while there are often food trucks you can purchase food from, you can also bring your own food, making this super budget-friendly!

West First Wood Fired Pizza

if you’re looking for a nice dining experience that won’t break the bank, give West First Wood Fired Pizza a chance! This super popular downtown restaurant offers only delicious, quality made-from-scratch options. Their pizza crust seriously has the perfect balance of chew and crisp.

My husband I ventured here for a date night, but you’ll find plenty of families dining, as well. We shared a large Caesar salad and their Hawaiian pizza. If you’re trying to stretch your dollars and feed a few people, I suggest ordering the garlic knots as an appetizer and a couple of pizzas to share. A cheese pizza could easily feed 2 or 3 kids, making this a more affordable fine

Farm Life: Pick-Your-Own Apples and More

One of the top things to do in Hendersonville is visit the local farms and orchards. From pick-your-own fruits to special seasonal events to children’s activities and more, you can step away from the bustle of the downtown area and enjoy a few hours of experiencing the farm life at one of Hendersonville’s top farms.

• Jeter Mountain Farm: A pick-your-own orchard that offers so much more,  including a bakery, coffee shop, indoor playground, a smokehouse, a farmers market and live bluegrass music every weekend,
• Justus Orchard: This 5th generation family-owned and operated farm and orchard offers pick-your-own apples, pears, and blackberries, as well as a bakery with their famous homemade baked goods, including fried apple pies and apple donuts. The kids will love visiting and enjoying the Cow Train and other fun activities. You can also enjoy a beverage in their new taproom, which sells local seasonal hard fruit ciders, craft beers, and wines.  
• Grandad’s Apples: Offers a quintessential fall farm experience for families. Visitors can enjoy pick-your-own apples in the orchard, explore a 5-acre corn maze, and take scenic wagon rides around the farm. The country store and bakery offer fresh apple products, including their famous apple cider donuts, pies, fresh cider, and local honey. For added fun, families can visit the barnyard area to see farm animals, play on the jump pad, or try their hand at gem mining.
• Creasman Farms: If you’re in Hendersonville in September or October, head over to Creasman Farms on a Sunday afternoon and pick your own apples from their expansive orchard of over 40 types of apples. This family-owned and operated farm also sells their homegrown produce at farmers’ markets throughout the year. 

Seasonal Sensations: Local Events

Hendersonville hosts several free or low-cost events throughout the year:

• North Carolina Apple Festival (Labor Day weekend): Celebrates the local apple industry with parades, rides, inflatables, music, food, a vendor market, plus more entertainment. It’s a huge event in Hendersonville and draws crowds from all around. 
• Garden Jubilee (Memorial Day weekend): A self-described “garden wonderland” with hundreds of vendors featuring plants, crafts, and garden accessories. You can also enjoy live music, delicious food, special guest speakers, and much more. Event organizers do ask that you leave pets at home, due to the large crowds and the potential for paw injuries due to all the garden carts
• Music on Main Street (summer months): Free concerts every Friday evening, along the Carolina Mountain Car Club weekly car show from June to August. Vendors will have food for purchase or you can save some money by bringing your own food and drink to enjoy. 
• Street Dances (summer months):  This Blue Ridge tradition dates back to 1918 after WWI to welcome back the town’s soldiers. This historic celebration features local bluegrass music, square dancing, and Appalachian clogging demonstrations. All are welcome to join in and dance or bring a lawn chair and enjoy the music. 
• Acoustic Jam Sessions (Fridays year round): Just west of Hendersonville in Etowah, Sideways Farm, and Brewery offers acoustic jam sessions all year long, no matter the temps. Bring your instruments or sing along with other local musicians while you enjoy their craft brews, non-alcoholic sips, and featured food trucks. 
• Treat Street Carnival (Halloween): A safe and fun trick-or-treating event up and down Main Street in downtown Hendersonville.

Rainy Day Rescues

Don’t let a little rain dampen your fun:

• Appalachian Pinball Museum: As mentioned above, for $13 you can play unlimited pinball and arcade games all day long. It’s the perfect rainy day activity. 
• Pisgah Forest Gem Mine: Try your hand at gem mining and see what beautiful gems and crystals you can discover! If you’re lucky, you might even find a ruby, sapphire, or emerald! Prices depend upon the bucket size you purchase. 
• The Hendersonville Theater: Check the Hendersonville Theater schedule for any family-friendly shows in production. 
• Flat Rock Playhouse: Just 10 minutes from downtown Hendersonville, The Flat Rock Playhouse offers productions of favorite musicals throughout the year. Check their calendar page for more upcoming shows. 

Tips and Tricks for a Smooth Family Adventure

• Best times to visit: Spring and fall offer mild weather and fewer crowds. Summer is peak season but offers the most activities. 
• Packing essentials: Comfortable walking shoes, water bottles, sunscreen, umbrellas, and light jackets (mountain weather can be unpredictable).
• Money-saving hacks:
  • Pack picnic lunches for day trips. While Hendersonville has tons of fabulous eateries, it can get pricey! Save money on food by packing your meals.

When I traveled to Europe my personal item bag was necessary for holding my travel documents, electronics, a change or two of clothes, toiletries, and anything else I needed to access quickly. Most airlines have a size limit of 18x14x8 inches and require that they fit under the seat in front of you. 

These personal item backpacks with multiple pockets can help keep you organized and distribute weight evenly, making it easier on your shoulders and back during long travel days. You can also opt for a personal item duffel bag or rolling bag that will fit under the seat in front of you.

Roll, Don’t Fold

Rolling your clothes instead of folding them is a game-changer. Not only does it save space, but it also helps minimize wrinkles. Start with your bulkier items and roll them tightly to fit more into your suitcase.

Use Packing Cubes

Compression packing cubes are a traveler’s best friend. These handy organizers compartmentalize your suitcase, making it easier to find what you need without unpacking everything. They also help compress your clothes, so you can fit more into your carry-on. Assign different cubes for tops, bottoms, undergarments, and accessories to keep everything neat and accessible.

Wear Your Bulkiest Items

To save space in your carry-on, wear your bulky items on the plane. This includes your heaviest shoes, jacket, and any layers you might need. Not only does this free up space, but it also keeps you cozy during the flight.

Utilize Every Inch

Maximize every nook and cranny of your suitcase. Stuff socks, underwear, and small accessories into your shoes to utilize the space efficiently. Place heavier items at the bottom of your suitcase, near the wheels, to maintain balance and make it easier to maneuver.

Go Digital

Ditch the physical guidebooks and maps and opt for digital versions on your phone or tablet. This not only saves space but also keeps you from lugging around extra weight. Download travel apps and store digital copies of your travel documents for easy access.

Bring a small packet of travel detergent or Dr. Bronner’s liquid castille soap to wash clothes in your hotel room. Lightweight, quick-drying fabrics are ideal for travel as they can be washed and dried overnight. I’ve even had to wash dirty jeans in the hotel sink and they only took a day to dry. 

If you’re traveling with your family, plan to wash a load of laundry. Most hotels and Airbnbs have access to laundry service. 

Stay Organized with a Packing List

Keep a detailed packing list to ensure you don’t forget any essentials and to avoid overpacking. Check off items as you pack them and make adjustments based on your itinerary and weather forecasts.

So, I’ve actually had this backpack for years. I used it as my school backpack when I was teaching.  It is now my go-to, bag for practically every trip. I’ve stowed it under many an airplane seat. It is durable, roomy, and stylish (and my husband will willingly carry this one around!)

It measures 18.1 x 12.6 x 7.8 inches, which is technically over the size limit, but if not bulging with hard items, it can be squished into the bag checker.  It has a laptop sleeve and can hold a 17″ laptop. It has a secret anti-theft pocket, plus two side pockets and a front pocket. The inside of the bag is super spacious and has two smaller compartments, as well.

I can stuff it full and easily fit a pair of shoes, a laptop, my makeup, a flat iron, plus a couple of outfits in it. It’s also great for when you get to a destination, and need a casual backpack to carry items for you or the family. It’s an awesome bag for travel, and my favorite backpack ever.

How to Pack in Only an 18x14x8 Backpack

If you’re looking at these bags and wondering, “How on earth am I going to fit everything?!” you’re not alone. I wondered the same thing the first time I attempted this! I was notorious for over-packing and lugging around giant suitcases with me everywhere.

Then, I learned how to pack for 10 days in Europe in only a carry-on when I had no other option. After that, I realized what I can get by without and how to streamline my packing list. And now I can easily pack for 3-5 days in a personal item bag. I’ll be putting it to the test this summer when we head to North Carolina for a 7 night trip with only our 18x14x8 backpacks!
