Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan (Now Called Atmos Rewards)

Alaska Airlines took the number one spot for best airline rewards program again this year, and for good reason. What makes this program special for families is that you earn miles based on the distance you fly, not how much you spend on your ticket. This is HUGE if you’re booking basic economy to save money – you still earn the same miles as someone in first class. And starting in 2026, you’ll have the option to choose whether you want to earn points based on distance, price paid, or segments flown. This should appeal to both business and economy travelers!

The Atmos Rewards program offers some seriously useful perks once you reach elite status, including free upgrades, checked bags, and same-day flight changes. Plus, Alaska Airlines is part of the oneworld alliance, which means you can earn and redeem miles on partner airlines like American Airlines and British Airways. That flexibility is clutch when you’re trying to find four seats together on the same flight.

And as of October 2025, Hawaiian Airlines has joined the Atmos rewards family and will help you build up those Atmos loyalty points!

United MileagePlus

United jumped to the number two spot last year, and it’s an excellent choice if you live near a United hub. The airline has an absolutely massive route network – over 40 airline partners through the Star Alliance – which gives you tons of options for using your miles.

What I love about United for families: they launched a partnership with JetBlue in late 2025, which will make it even easier to earn and redeem miles on flights your family actually wants to take. Plus, you can use MileagePlus miles for hotel stays with major brands like Marriott, Hyatt, and others, giving you more flexibility in how you redeem.

American Airlines AAdvantage

American Airlines AAdvantage ranks third, and it’s a solid program with access to over 900 destinations through oneworld partners. The program offers loyalty point boosts that help you achieve elite status faster, which can make family travel so much more comfortable with perks like priority boarding and free checked bags.

One tip: if you fly American frequently, those free checked bags alone can save a family of four around $120-$240 per round trip. That adds up fast.

Southwest Rapid Rewards

Now, Southwest didn’t rank in the top three overall, but I have to mention them because they’re phenomenal for families. Southwest has no blackout dates – literally every seat on every flight is available to book with points. And they offer the famous Companion Pass, which lets one person fly free (just paying taxes and fees, usually around $5.60 each way) for up to two years.

For families, this is game-changing. Earn the Companion Pass, and suddenly you’re only paying for three tickets instead of four. Southwest also lets families with children under 6 board early, which makes getting seats together much easier.

Best Hotel Rewards Programs

Choice Privileges

Choice Privileges took the number one spot for hotel rewards programs in 2025, and honestly, I think it’s because they just get it. Choice Hotels operates over 7,400 properties ranging from budget-friendly Econo Lodge to upscale Cambria Hotels, and even includes Radisson properties now.

What makes Choice Privileges great for families is how quickly you can earn a free night. The earning structure is straightforward, and you can reach elite status after just 10 nights, which gets you perks like room upgrades, early check-in, and late checkout. 

Marriott Bonvoy

Marriott Bonvoy is the behemoth of hotel loyalty programs, and while it can be complex, it offers incredible value for families. With 30+ brands and thousands of properties worldwide, you’ve got options for every budget and travel style. It’s the first loyalty program we joined 15 years ago, and we have booked literally dozens of rooms on points.

Here’s what matters for larger families: many Marriott properties offer a 50% second-room discount when kids 16 and under occupy it. (Note: the discount is applied at arrival, not booking, so call the hotel ahead of time to verify they’ll honor it.) Also, when you book on points, the 5th night is always free. We’ve been able to extend many of our vacations by a day because of this perk!  In addition, once you have platinum status, you have access to the lounge, meaning free drinks, snacks, and breakfast during your stay. 

You can also earn Bonvoy points through a co-branded credit card and use those points for everything from budget hotels to luxury resorts. 

Hilton Honors

Hilton Honors covers over 7,000 properties across 22 brands in more than 170 countries. The program offers confirmed connecting rooms (huge for families who need to spread out), mobile check-in to skip lines with impatient kids, and the ability to pool points between family members.

Hilton’s family-friendly brands like Embassy Suites (all-suites, perfect for families) and their all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean make this program especially valuable if you’re planning beach vacations. 

World of Hyatt

World of Hyatt consistently ranks in the top three hotel loyalty programs, and travelers love it for good reason. While Hyatt has fewer properties than Marriott or Hilton, the quality is generally excellent, and the program is incredibly generous with perks.

Hyatt offers some of the best value when you redeem points for hotel stays, and they’re a popular transfer partner for Chase Ultimate Rewards points. If you’re strategic about earning and redeeming, you can score luxury hotel stays at a fraction of the cash price!

How to Actually Maximize These Programs (Without Losing Your Mind)

Okay, so you know which programs are worth joining. Now let’s talk strategy, because just signing up isn’t enough – you need to use these programs intentionally to get real value.

Start with One Flexible Credit Card

The fastest way to rack up enough points for family travel is through credit card sign-up bonuses. Cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred offer substantial welcome bonuses – often 75,000 points or more after you spend a certain amount in the first few months. (I was able to nab a 100k point bonus, so be on the lookout for promotions!)

Here’s why this matters: those 75,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points could cover three nights at a great hotel in a major city, or multiple domestic round-trip flights. That’s not pocket change – that’s a family vacation. You can redeem them 1:1 at hotel and airline transfer partners or on the Chase Travel Portal. They also offer “point boosts” at certain times, so watch for any promotions to get even more bang for your buck.

Use your rewards credit card for everything you’re already buying: groceries, gas, bills, and back-to-school shopping. The points add up quickly, especially if you choose a card that offers bonus earning in categories where your family spends the most.

Focus Your Hotel and Airline Loyalty

Once you’ve got a solid credit card rewards program, pick one airline loyalty program and one hotel loyalty program to focus on. We started with the American Airlines AAdvantage program (we’re near the main hub in DFW) and the Marriott Bonvoy program. This is key – spreading yourself too thin across six different programs means you’ll never earn enough points in any single program to actually redeem for meaningful rewards.

Choose your airline based on which one has the most flights from your home airport. If you live near a Delta hub, Delta SkyMiles makes sense. Near American Airlines? Go with AAdvantage. The goal is to concentrate your earnings so you can actually reach elite status and unlock better perks.

For hotels, if you’re aiming for budget travel, I’d recommend starting with a program like Choice or Hyatt, where you’ll get more bang for your buck. While I love the Marriott program and am very invested in it after 15 years of travel, if I were to start all over, I’d definitely go with Choice or Hyatt. 

Take Advantage of Point Pooling

Several programs allow family members to pool points or miles, which is incredibly useful when you need enough points to book for multiple people. JetBlue and United both allow this for airlines. On the hotel side, Hilton makes pooling super easy with one-to-one transfer ratios.

If your family travels even semi-regularly, you might hit this naturally. And if you have certain travel credit cards, like the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express, they automatically provide you with elite status. 

The perks at even basic elite status levels can make a huge difference in family travel comfort: free checked bags (saving $30-$50 per bag, per person, each way), priority boarding, free upgrades when available, late checkout, and sometimes complimentary breakfast or lounge access. For a family of four taking just three trips a year, those free checked bags alone could save you $1000+ annually.

Book Strategically to Stretch Your Points Further

Not all redemptions are created equal. Sometimes using 50,000 points gets you a $400 hotel stay, while other times it only covers $200 worth of value. Learning to evaluate redemption values helps you maximize what you’ve earned.

Enroll your entire family in your chosen airline loyalty program and sign one of the grownups up for a hotel loyalty program (or both if they offer family points poolings).

Month Two: Start using that credit card for all purchases you’d normally make anyway. Don’t change your spending habits just to earn points – that defeats the purpose. The goal is to earn rewards on spending you’re already doing. And be sure you pay that credit card off at the end of the month! If you’re accruing interest on that credit card, it totally defeats the purpose of budget rewards travel. 

Month Three: By now, you should have earned your sign-up bonus. Start researching how to redeem those points for your next family trip. If you need more points, see if they offer a referral bonus, and have your partner or spouse sign up and rake in some points, too!

Common Questions I Hear All the Time

“Do points expire?” Most programs require some activity every 12-18 months to keep points from expiring, but this is easy to avoid. Make one purchase with a co-branded credit card, book one flight, or stay one night at a hotel in that loyalty program, and your points stay active.

“Can my kids earn their own points?” Absolutely! Children can have their own frequent flyer accounts and hotel loyalty accounts from birth. They won’t earn points through credit cards until they’re 18, but any flights they take or hotel stays under their name can earn them points.

“What if I don’t have enough points for everyone?” You don’t have to book everything with points. We often use a hybrid approach – book three tickets with miles and pay cash for the other two, or use points for hotels and pay cash for flights. The nylon is easy to keep clean and will keep your things dry, while still looking high quality. I love the versatility of this bag, as you could easily use it for travel, as well as a backpack for around town, school, business, etc.

So, I’ve actually had this backpack for years. I used it as my school backpack when I was teaching.  It is now my go-to, bag for practically every trip. I’ve stowed it under many an airplane seat. It is durable, roomy, and stylish (and my husband will willingly carry this one around!)

It measures 18.1 x 12.6 x 7.8 inches, which is technically over the size limit, but if not bulging with hard items, it can be squished into the bag checker.  It has a laptop sleeve and can hold a 17″ laptop. It has a secret anti-theft pocket, plus two side pockets and a front pocket. The inside of the bag is super spacious and has two smaller compartments, as well.

How to Pack in Only an 18x14x8 Backpack

If you’re looking at these bags and wondering, “How on earth am I going to fit everything?!” you’re not alone. I wondered the same thing the first time I attempted this! I was notorious for over-packing and lugging around giant suitcases with me everywhere.

  • Note: For families with kids in school, I know it feels like you’re only limited to school holidays and summer break. But as a former teacher, I say miss school and take the trip! • Avoid major events and holidays: While President’s Day might not seem like a popular holiday, you’re going to pay premium prices to fly that day. Any holiday when the kids are out of school and banks are closed is going to mean higher prices.  Also, check for major events going on at your destination. You’ll spend a lot more on flights, hotels, and rental cars if the demand is high.
• Be climate flexible: Everyone wants to visit Costa Rica in the dry months and Aspen during the winter snows, but you can save a ton of money if you go when the weather is less than optimal. Of course, this won’t work for everyone, but it’s something to consider!
• Travel in the middle of the week: Airfare is typically cheaper on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with Sundays and Mondays usually being the priciest days to fly.

Location, Location, Location

Flexibility doesn’t just apply to timing. Being flexible in location is also key to finding cheap flight deals!

• Search for “cheapest flights from…”: a simple Google search will help you find the best deals from your location
• Search for “Everywhere”: Use Skyscanner and type “Everywhere” in the destination box. It will help you find the cheapest flights to anywhere during your specific time period. This is perfect if you’re limited to traveling at a specific time period. 
• Choose airline hubs: When you fly into an airline hub, you can often score cheaper flights. For example, taking a Frontier flight to and from Denver is often an affordable option, since they have so many flights to and from their hub.
• Try a nearby airport: Flexibility on your departing location can also score you a deal. For instance, we’re driving 4 hours to Houston this summer to catch flights on Allegiant to Asheville. This is saving us over $700!

Price Alerts

Utilizing tools like price alerts from travel apps can help you snag the best travel deals the moment they drop!

• Google Flights: I love Google Flights for fare alerts. I love the ability to easily scan prices via their monthly calendar and receive email alerts when they find lower prices within a specific time frame. It’s usually the first place I check for airfare since it sends me directly to the airline to book my flights. 
• Hopper: The Hopper app is another awesome tool for tracking flights. It allows you to freeze prices for a small fee when you find a great deal but still want to watch the prices.  You can also easily cancel or change your flight through Hopper, so you’re not out a ton of money in case of an emergency or change of plans.

Flight Booking Tips: How to Find the Best Deals on Flights Without Points

Booking cheap flights without credit card points is less about luck and more about strategy. Here are our top tips for booking airfare without breaking the bank:

• Use flight comparison tools: Use tools like Google Flights or Skyscanner to find a range of options, find deals,  and set up alerts for price drops.
• Book domestic flights about six weeks in advance and give yourself at least 2 months for overseas flights: It is hard to pinpoint the perfect time to book, but this is a good general rule. It typically offers a balance between last-minute hikes and the higher prices a year out from departure. But definitely use price alerts to monitor flights months in advance. 
• Consider alternative airports: Check for other airports near your departure and destination for potentially cheaper fares, and always be open to taking connecting flights, which can be significantly less expensive than direct routes.
• Read the fine print: When you find advertisements for flight deals, always read the fine print for specific travel days with lower prices. For example, Frontier Airlines will often post flight sales for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday travel, so you’ll want to book flights that leave or return on those days. 
• Stay longer: Sometimes staying longer will score you a better flight deal. If Tuesdays are the cheapest day for flying with an airline, staying until the following Tuesday will mean a cheaper flight. We have found this to be true a lot of the time, and typically try to plan a week at our destinations. 
• Take advantage of airline rewards: When you book your flights, make sure you register with the airline to start accruing those airmiles, especially if you’re doing international travel. It might take a while, but if you’re planning to become a frequent flier, you’ll eventually get free flights or first-class or business-class upgrades with those miles you’ve racked up!
• Check the ultra-low-cost carriers: I used to shy away from everything but full service airlines because of stories I’d heard. But when I couldn’t resist the bargain price any longer, I gave the ultra-low-cost airlines, like Spirit and Frontier a shot and am so glad I did! Now they are my first pick for domestic flights. You can save hundreds on one flight!
• Don’t pay for extras you don’t really need: Check before you pay extra for seat assignments, extra bags, wifi, etc. Do you really need it? Check the airline’s policies about seating families together. And consider fitting everything in the free luggage allotment. Cutting back on the extras is key to securing cheap flights.

Accommodation Hacks: Choosing Where to Stay to Save Big

Your choice of accommodation can drastically affect your travel costs. Here are some of our favorite ways to save on a place to stay:

• Choose hotels off the beaten path: You’re likely going to pay much more for hotels in a tourist area. For instance, Times Square is going to cost you much more than a hotel in the Lower East Side or Brooklyn. Location is one of the easiest ways to save money on accommodations.
• Get a suite and share: If you’re traveling with a group or have a larger family like us, a typical hotel room won’t fit everyone. Instead of booking multiple rooms, opt for a suite.
• Check out hostels: While very popular in Europe, they’re becoming more popular here in the States. Hostels are cheaper than traditional hotels and have different options for sleeping arrangements if you’re not comfortable with a room full of strangers. But if you’re looking it as a cheap place to sleep and aren’t worried about snoozing with strangers, this is a great way to save potentially hundreds of dollars. 
• House rental:  While not as affordable as it used to be (those pesky cleaning fees are high!), renting through Airbnb or VRBO can be a great option for large families or big parties traveling together who want to have an extended stay and save money on eating out. And if you look at neighborhoods a bit farther out from the main tourist attractions, you can find even more budget-friendly options. 
•  Choose hotels with free breakfast and free parking: If you decide to go the hotel route, choose one with free breakfasts and free parking. This can easily save you at least $50 a day, and sometimes much more! 
• Sign up for hotel rewards: When you become a hotel loyalty member, those hotel stays add to up big rewards like free hotel stays! We’ve been a Marriott Bonvoy Rewards member for the past 10 years and had dozens of free stays, plus awesome upgrades, like access to the concierge lounge and suites.  When you book directly with the hotel you’ll rack up points, which is a great way to earn free stays in the future.

One of the best ways to save is by packing light. Honestly, most people only need a few things for each day. Minimalism is the key to packing efficiently and saving money on baggage fees.

• Local eats: Embrace local food markets and street vendors, which often offer delicious and authentic meals at a fraction of the restaurant prices.
• Prepare meals: If you have kitchen access, try preparing some meals yourself, which not only saves money but also lets you experiment with local ingredients.
• Picnics: Pack some simple sandwiches and fruit and enjoy a picnic at a beautiful park or garden or on the steps of a museum. It’s much cheaper and healthier than grabbing overpriced fast food.
• Free hotel food:  See if your hotel offers free breakfast or evening snacks. Anything free significantly cuts down on your food budget!

I love visiting big cities or gorgeous nature getaways due to all the free attractions. You can experience A LOT without spending money! Here are some of the amazing free experiences you can look out for:

• Museums: Many big cities offer free admission to their museums each day or on specific days/times. This is always one of the first things I look for when planning our trips.
• Outdoor markets: I love to wander through farmers and vendor markets, even if I’m not spending a dime. It’s a great way to see local artists and crafters’ wares. You’ll sometimes find live music at these events, also.
• Gardens: Botanic gardens are a great way to spend an afternoon and are often free or very cheap admission.
• Beaches: Whether you’re near the coast or a lake, a day at the beach is a fabulous free way to spend the day
• Trails: Hiking is one of my favorite free activities. Not only are you enjoying local nature but you’re getting an incredible workout, a dose of Vitamin D, and some needed fresh air.
• Historical sites: Many historical sites are free to visit. The Historical Marker Database is an excellent resource for finding historical markers wherever you’ll be visiting.

Transportation can easily blow your travel funds. Expensive uber rides and rental car fees can really add up, but there are ways to get around town for less:

• Use public transportation: A lot of major cities have awesome public transportation. If you’re in a city with a subway system, light rail, trolleys, or extensive bus system, you get around for dollars a day. Check into day passes or weekly passes if you’re going to be making multiple trips a day. 
• Walk: Another reason I love staying in big cities is the walkability. Being able to walk to restuarants, shopping and activities means I’m getting exercise and saving money. 
• Try Turo: If you need a rental car, you can score cheaper rental car deals using Turo. Renting from an individual is often considerably cheaper and easier than renting from the major rental car companies. 
• Electric bikes or scooters: If you need to make it a few miles, you can also rent an electric bike or scooter. It will get you around way quicker than walking but is definitely more affordable than a rental car. 
• Ride-Share: While taking an Uber can be pricey at times, if you’re just needing a lift to and from the airport or have a short trip here and there, it can still be the affordable option when you take into consideration rental car and parking fees.

The answer is yes! These methods won’t accumulate points as quickly as you would with a travel rewards credit card, but they can still help you earn lots of travel benefits over time:

Note: When we’ve flown on Frontier Airlines with our kids, we have been assigned seats next to them upon check-in. My fourteen-year-old was not seated next to us, so my hubby switched with her so she wasn’t seated alone. And while some flight crews are accommodating with moving people, don’t bet on it! If you really need to get a seat with someone, it’s best to pay the seat selection fee when booking for the best price.

Arriving early at the gate can ease some of that stress. We suggest arriving two hours early for domestic flights and three hours for international flights.

Take a deep breath and remind yourself that they are just doing their job. A smile can go a long way, especially when you’re navigating the quirks and queues of budget travel. • If you’re on a tight budget, saving the money on that extra seat can mean big savings and might be the only way you can afford to fly
• If you’re traveling with a baby plus older children who need to sit near you, letting your baby sit on your lap will allow you to keep all your kids close. When I was traveling alone with a baby, toddler, and kindergartener, this was a necessity for me.
• If have a fussy infant who prefers to be held, carrying them in your lap may give you peace of mind (and peace to the passengers around you). I was able to breastfeed my fussy baby through take-off and landing, which was comforting for my daughter through the pressure changes on the flight. 
• You don’t have a car seat that will fit and don’t want to buy a new one just for the flight.
• It’s predicted to be a not-full flight and there’s a possibility of having an empty seat near you. You may have a generous flight attendant or gate agent who can make this happen. It doesn’t hurt to ask!

While it is safer to have your child secured in an infant car seat, many fliers prefer to take the lap-child-route.

Here are some reasons why having a separate seat for your infant or toddler might be the best option for you:

• If safety is a major concern for you, then you’ll want to purchase a seat and bring an FAA-approved car seat on board for your infant or toddler. In the case of severe turbulence, you’ll have peace of mind that your child is strapped in safely. (Note: The risk of injury on an airplane is very low, but there is always some risk.)
• If you have a heavy baby that would be difficult to hold for hours or a very wiggly child you may want to bring a car seat. There’s a big difference between holding a newborn that will sleep most of the flight and a 25-pound toddler that can’t sit still. 
• If you have twins or multiple children under the age of two, only one child will be able to fly for free on your lap.
• It’s predicted to be a packed flight and you can’t count on an empty seat next to you on the plane. 

Onboard Amenities for Infants

Traveling with an infant can be a challenging experience, to say the least. The tight quarters and no-frills interior on a Spirit Airlines plane definitely make it extra challenging to meet your baby’s needs. But they do offer the following amenities for infants on board the flight:

Diaper Changing Facilities

Spirit Airlines provides diaper-changing facilities on all of its flights. At least one lavatory on board is equipped with a small changing table. I suggest you ask the flight attendant upon boarding for assistance in locating the nearest changing table. 

If you want to avoid the tiny diaper changing table if at all possible, change your baby’s diaper right before your flight. Another suggestion is to use an overnight diaper when flying. Of course, when nature calls and your infant has to go number two, having a small diaper-changing kit to use on board is super helpful. 

While it might seem easier, it is frowned upon to change your baby in your seat, especially if it’s more than a wet diaper. While as a mom I understand the inconvenience of an airplane bathroom, it’s super rude to other passengers around you to change them from your seat. No one wants to smell that when they’re trapped in a row near you. 

Stroller Handling

If you are traveling with a stroller, Spirit Airlines allows you to bring your stroller to the gate, where it will be checked in and returned to you at the gate upon arrival. You can check one stroller per child, or opt for a double stroller if you’re traveling with two children.

Oversized wagon strollers might not fly as a free stroller, depending upon the airline employee, so I suggest that you check ahead of time to make sure your wagon qualifies as a stroller with Spirit Airlines

If you purchased the WORKS when booking your flight, your cancellation fees are free and you have a one-year expiration date to book a new flight. Or you can opt to get your money back and request a refund by filling out this form.

If you think you may need to change your flight time, I suggest choosing Flight Flexibility when booking. It’s a small fee but really worth it. With flight flexibility, you’re able to change your flight one time for free, minus the difference in the flight fees. Otherwise, you’ll be hit with some change fees if your flight is less than 60 days away and you need to book a different flight.

If you need to cancel a Frontier Miles reward reservation, the points will be refunded to your account. However, the taxes and fees associated with the reservation are non-refundable.

If you’ve ever booked a flight on a low-cost carrier like Spirit or Frontier Airlines, then you probably know that those cheap flights are only cheap if you don’t bring any extra baggage. Those carry-on bags and checked bags are going to cost you a pretty penny. If you’re like us and traveling with a family of 5, saving those $60 bag fees BOTH WAYS is a big deal.

When I booked my first Spirit Airlines Flight to Orlando this past year, I was excited to fly for less than $100! But once I got to checking out online, I was shocked at how much the cost would increase if I brought a carry-on bag.

I really wasn’t to spend the money on a bag to sit in an overhead bin, so I decided to do some research and see if I would be able to pack my luggage for a 3-day trip in an 18 x 14 x 8-inch personal item bag. (Note: My husband was traveling ahead of me and able to take a few things with him, like my formal wear, that I didn’t want to risk rolling up and cramming in my little bag.)

Now, if you’re traveling for a longer trip, I’m not sure that you can manage just a personal item bag, but if you’re like one of my kids who prefers to wear the same outfit 3 days in a row, you might have success!
