<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Planning a family road trip? Let me guess – the thought of a long car ride with your sensory-sensitive kiddo makes you want to hide under a weighted blanket and never come out? Trust me, I&#8217;ve been there more times than I can count. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But here&#8217;s the thing – with some intentional planning and a well-stocked sensory kit, road trips can actually be fun. My daughter has significant sensory needs, and after years of trial and error (and yes, <s>a few</s> a lot of epic meltdowns along the way), I think I&#8217;m finally catching on to some life savers for sensory-friendly travel. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, I&#8217;m sharing some tips I&#8217;ve learned so far and <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/best-toddler-travel-gear-essentials" data-type="post" data-id="4789">all the essentials</a> to create a road trip-friendly sensory kit so you can bypass some of the stress and instead enjoy that true crime podcast on your AirPods while you cruise the open roads.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-kadence-advancedbtn kb-buttons-wrap kb-btns6645_3ac7c6-f8"><a class="kb-button kt-button button kb-btn6645_14d4f5-e6 kt-btn-size-standard kt-btn-width-type-auto kb-btn-global-fill kt-btn-has-text-true kt-btn-has-svg-false wp-block-kadence-singlebtn" id="sensory-kit" href="#sensorykit"><span class="kt-btn-inner-text">Jump to Road-Trip Friendly Sensory Kit</span></a></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Understanding Your Child&#8217;s Road Trip-Friendly Sensory Challenges on the Road</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before we dive into packing tips, let&#8217;s talk about why <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/traveling-with-a-neurodivergent-child" data-type="link" data-id="https://meredithadkisson.com/traveling-with-a-neurodivergent-child">family road trips can be particularly challenging for kids with sensory issues</a>. And if you&#8217;re a <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/highly-sensitive-parent-travel-tips" data-type="post" data-id="4127">highly sensitive parent</a>, it can be incredibly challenging for you, too! The confined space, constant motion, engine noise, changing scenery, and inability to move freely can create the perfect storm for sensory overload in even a non-sensory sensitive child. Add in excitement, anxiety about the destination, lack of sleep, or disrupted routines, and it&#8217;s no wonder our sensitive kids majorly struggle on long car rides.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <strong>KEY</strong> is recognizing that what others might deem &#8220;bad behavior&#8221; is often your child&#8217;s nervous system trying to cope with too much stimulation and alerting you to your child&#8217;s needs. Once I understood this about my daughter, everything changed. Instead of feeling frustrated, impatient, and full of dread, I started approaching our travels with empathy and preparation.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Creating the Ultimate Road Trip-Friendly Sensory Kit</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph" id="sensorykit">Your sensory kit is going to be your secret weapon. Think of it as a portable calm-down corner that travels with you. I keep ours in a dedicated backpack that stays packed and ready to go – because let&#8217;s be honest, sometimes those spontaneous ice cream runs turn into longer adventures!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Sensory Toys and Tactile Items That Work Wonders</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/tactile-1.png" alt="tactile items for sensory kit" class="wp-image-6659" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/tactile-1.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/tactile-1-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/tactile-1-768x461.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Start with items that provide comforting tactile input:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Weighted lap pad</strong> &#8211; Absolutely game-changing for long car rides and flights. The gentle pressure can help your child feel grounded and calm when everything else feels chaotic.&nbsp; I have a <a href="https://amzn.to/4nlyvj0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">5-pound version</a> for me, as well. It&#8217;s my number one travel essential!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Stress balls (various textures)</strong> &#8211; Pack both smooth and bumpy varieties. <a href="https://amzn.to/4gEKDZJ" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">This variety pack</a> checks all the boxes. Some kids crave smooth surfaces while others need more intense tactile input. <a href="https://amzn.to/4gCn97D" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Large pom poms</a> are some of my favorites because they&#8217;re super cheap when you have to replace them, and they won&#8217;t hurt anyone when they inevitably get chunked at someone&#8217;s head because they&#8217;re chewing too loudly.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Squishy fidget toys</strong> &#8211; <a href="https://amzn.to/46ASRxo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Mochi squishies</a> are great sensory toys for kids who need something to squeeze and manipulate with their hands and are fun for imagination play, as well. Their low price point makes them great for surprising kids with a new one each day of the trip.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Smooth stones or textured fabric pieces</strong> &#8211; For older kids and teens,&nbsp; a <a href="https://amzn.to/47WltUj" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">little mesh bag</a> filled with smooth rocks that your kid can shake around or move her fingers through is relaxing. (Please remain vigilant and do not give to young children due to the risk of choking.) For younger kids, <a href="https://amzn.to/4pwG2gd" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">fabric touch and feel books</a>, <a href="https://amzn.to/4gBaDp3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">tag security blankets</a>, simple cut pieces of varying fabrics, or&nbsp;<a href="https://amzn.to/3W5vMOs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">bean bags made of differing fabrics</a> are a great addition to the sensory bag.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Soft travel blanket</strong> &#8211; Non-negotiable in our family! Even in summer, having that familiar smell,&nbsp; weight, and texture within reach provides instant comfort. Choose one that&#8217;s small enough not to overwhelm your car space but large enough to provide that cozy feeling. My kids are tweens and teens now, and still bring their <a href="https://amzn.to/4gBaDp3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">favorite travel blanket&nbsp;</a>with them on every trip.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Managing Sound and Noise</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/noise-silencing.png" alt="sound sensitivity management" class="wp-image-6658" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/noise-silencing.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/noise-silencing-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/noise-silencing-768x461.png 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Noise can be a huge trigger during car rides:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Noise-canceling headphones</strong> &#8211; Invest in good quality ones! The engine, road noise, siblings talking, or music can quickly lead to sensory overload. We got <a href="https://amzn.to/46uUYTu" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/46uUYTu" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Apple Airpod Pros</a> to help with my at the time tween daughter&#8217;s misophonia, and they&#8217;ve been worth every penny.&nbsp;They literally are a lifesaver on </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Earplugs</strong> &#8211; Perfect option for sound reduction when you don&#8217;t want to use the headphones. My daughter prefers these <a href="https://amzn.to/427QPUh" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Curvd brand earplugs</a> over the other popular brands. For kids aged 6-12, these <a href="https://amzn.to/47Wr4dh" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Loop Engage earplugs</a> help block unwanted noises without silencing everything around them. And for babies and toddlers, you can find <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/best-baby-noise-canceling-headphones" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lots of options here</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&nbsp;<strong>• Soft hat or ear warmers</strong> &#8211; Sometimes just having something soft covering the ears can help. This cute and cozy fleece <a href="https://amzn.to/3ID1DTw" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/3ID1DTw" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">headband also doubles as headphones</a> for your kiddo!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Playlist or audiobooks</strong> &#8211; Some kids actually need more auditory input, not less. Having their favorite songs or stories downloaded and ready gives you control over the auditory environment.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• White noise machines and apps</strong> &#8211; Great for kids who need a consistent background sound to feel calm. I love how this <a href="https://amzn.to/423s2AD" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">white noise machine doubles as a customizable nightlight</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Items for Oral Sensory Needs</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/oral-1.png" alt="oral items for sensory kit" class="wp-image-6660" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/oral-1.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/oral-1-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/oral-1-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many kids with sensory challenges need oral input during stress or excitement:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Chewable jewelry or necklaces</strong> &#8211; Safe, wearable <a href="https://amzn.to/4gG7YdC" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">chewable jewelry</a> options that won&#8217;t get lost in the car.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Chewy toys (various textures)</strong> &#8211; Pack both <a href="https://amzn.to/3VwsALK" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">smooth and bumpy chewy toy varieties</a>. Some firm, some softer &#8211; what works one day might not work the next.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Thick straws or chew tubes</strong> &#8211; Great <a href="https://amzn.to/46u26Q0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">chewy toy alternatives</a> that provide the oral input they&#8217;re seeking.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Visual and Focus Tools</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/visual-1.png" alt="visual items or sensory kit" class="wp-image-6661" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/visual-1.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/visual-1-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/visual-1-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Keep hands busy and provide visual input with these essentials:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Coloring books</strong> &#8211; A classic for a reason! They provide focused visual input while keeping hands busy. Perfect for both littles, teens, and adults!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Sticker books</strong> &#8211; Less messy than crayons and equally engaging. These <a href="https://amzn.to/4pCPKxC" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">reusable sticker books</a> are my favorite.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Drawing boards</strong> &#8211; These <a href="https://amzn.to/42agqf7" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">LCD drawing boards</a> are lightweight, reusable, and mess-free for creative expression.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Simple fidget toys with visual elements</strong> &#8211; Toys that light up, change colors, or have interesting visual patterns. These <a href="https://amzn.to/3KhEGWv" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">light-up fidget spinners</a> are favorites.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Color-specific items</strong> &#8211; Consider the color of items you&#8217;re packing. Some kids are calmed by certain colors, while others might be overstimulated by bright or busy patterns.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Smart Packing Tips for Success</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The way you organize your road trip-friendly sensory kit can make or break your trip:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Keep essentials within reach</strong> &#8211; Everything your child might need should be accessible from their seat, not buried in a suitcase. I learned this the hard way during a memorable meltdown flying home from Denver.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><a href="https://amzn.to/46UOL4y" target="_blank" rel=" noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="865" height="1024" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/expandable-tote-bag-865x1024.jpg" alt="expandable tote bag" class="wp-image-6657" style="width:375px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/expandable-tote-bag-865x1024.jpg 865w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/expandable-tote-bag-253x300.jpg 253w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/expandable-tote-bag-768x910.jpg 768w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/expandable-tote-bag.jpg 1161w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 865px) 100vw, 865px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Use a dedicated sensory travel bag</strong> &#8211; This <a href="https://amzn.to/46UOL4y" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">expandable tote bag</a> is perfect! It&#8217;s easy to carry and has a large capacity for storing everything you need. It expands open completely and has 15 differnt compartments to keep you organized. Keep it packed and ready to go for spontaneous trips or around town.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Pack doubles of favorites</strong> &#8211; If your child has a beloved squishy toy or chew item, pack a backup. Kids lose things, and gas station parking lots are not forgiving.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>• Create a small, easy-access car bag</strong> &#8211; The most critical items should sit right next to your child in a small bag they can reach and open independently. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Creating Calm in the Chaos</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even with the best preparation, challenging moments will happen. The key is having sensory regulation strategies to help your child find calm again quickly. This is where understanding your child&#8217;s specific sensory needs becomes crucial.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some kids need to increase sensory input when they&#8217;re overwhelmed – they might need to squeeze a stress ball, chew on something, or put on their weighted lap pad. Others need to decrease stimulation – dim lights, quiet voices, and smooth textures might help them reset.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Practice these calming strategies at home before your trip. The middle of a highway isn&#8217;t the time to discover that your child hates the new fidget toy you packed or that the backup chewable item has a texture they can&#8217;t tolerate.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also, pay extra attention to physical needs. Travel means disrupted schedules and environments. Keeping snacks and drinks on hand will help combat the hangry. Allow for extra rest/nap time, too. Sensory-sensitive kiddos need us to help monitor and anticipate their needs before the overwhelm hits.&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Managing Meltdowns on the Road</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let&#8217;s be real – sometimes, despite all our preparation, meltdowns happen. And that&#8217;s okay! Having sensory needs doesn&#8217;t mean your family can&#8217;t travel; it just means you travel differently.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When a meltdown occurs, prioritize safety first. Pull over as soon as it&#8217;s safe to do so. Don&#8217;t try to power through or wait for the next rest stop if your child is in severe distress.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once stopped, resist the urge to talk too much or offer too many solutions at once. Sometimes kids need to work through their big feelings before they can accept comfort. Keep sensory items nearby, speak softly, and wait for cues about what might help.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/kid-in-car.png" alt="" class="wp-image-6651" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/kid-in-car.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/kid-in-car-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/kid-in-car-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Road Trip Ready: The Magic of Routine and Predictability</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One thing that has dramatically improved our road trips is creating predictable routines around travel. For example, pack the sensory kit the night before. Make the same first stop for snacks. For my daughter, that means Starbucks as soon as we get through security at the airport or McDonald&#8217;s on a road trip. Listen to the same &#8220;travel playlist&#8221; for the first thirty minutes. You get the picture. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"> Predicability can be a great comfort for sensory-sensitive kids.&nbsp;Routines help signal to the nervous system that even though we&#8217;re doing something different, some things stay the same. It&#8217;s like giving a sensory system a roadmap for what to expect.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wrapping Up: Road Trip-Friendly Sensory Kit Ready!</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Planning a sensory-friendly road trip might feel overwhelming at first, but remember – you&#8217;re the expert on your child. You know what soothes them, what excites them, and what sends them over the edge. Trust that knowledge, pack thoughtfully, and give yourself grace.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Our family&#8217;s best memories have come from trips that didn&#8217;t go according to plan but taught us something new about flexibility, patience, and adventure. Your child&#8217;s sensory needs aren&#8217;t something to overcome – they&#8217;re just one part of who they are, and with the right preparation, they don&#8217;t have to limit your family&#8217;s adventures.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So make that road trip-friendly sensory kit checklist, throw in an extra stress ball and favorite toys, and hit the road. And don&#8217;t forget the snacks!&nbsp;</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Capsule Wardrobe Concept: Because Mama Ain&#8217;t Got Time for Overpacking</h2>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/capsule-wardrobe.png" alt="capsule wardrobe" class="wp-image-6786" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/capsule-wardrobe.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/capsule-wardrobe-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/capsule-wardrobe-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, before we dive into the good stuff, let me introduce you to your new best friend: the capsule wardrobe. What&#8217;s that, you might ask? It&#8217;s the art of mixing and matching a few key pieces to create a wardrobe that&#8217;s more versatile than a Southern woman with a casserole recipe.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think of it like this: instead of packing your entire closet (tempting as that may be), you&#8217;re gonna choose a handful of pieces that play well together. It&#8217;s like creating a little clothing family that all gets along, no matter how you pair them up. Trust me, it&#8217;s perfect for our road trip shenanigans because it means less time packing and more time living your best life.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The beauty of a capsule wardrobe is that it forces you to be creative. You might think, &#8220;But Meredith, won&#8217;t I get bored wearing the same things over and over?&#8221; But girl, let me tell you, with the right pieces and a little imagination, you&#8217;ll have more outfit combinations than a Waffle House has hash brown variations. And that&#8217;s saying something.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Comfortable and Versatile Road Trip Essentials</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, let&#8217;s talk about the stars of our road trip fashion show. These essential pieces of clothing are everything you need for multiple outfits to wear, and they&#8217;re all available on Amazon because ain&#8217;t nobody got time for multiple shopping trips when there&#8217;s an adventure waiting. Let&#8217;s start building those road trip outfits: </p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>The Perfect Maxi Dress: From Gas Station Chic to Fancy Dinner Ready</strong></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Y&#8217;all, this dress is the Swiss Army knife of your travel wardrobe. Look for something in a wrinkle-resistant fabric that can take you from a morning sunrise to a candlelit dinner without missing a beat. Bonus points if it has pockets, because where else are you gonna stash that Chapstick?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I&#8217;m talking about a dress that&#8217;s comfy enough to nap in (because let&#8217;s face it, someone&#8217;s gotta sleep while your husband insists on driving straight through), but stylish enough to make you look like you just stepped out of a fashion magazine when you&#8217;re actually just stepping out of a rest stop bathroom.</p>

<p class="has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><em>Sponsored</em></p>

<div class="wp-block-image">

Your biggest trouble will be just ordering one. </p>

<ol start="2" class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Yoga Pants That Don&#8217;t Scream &#8220;I&#8217;ve Given Up&#8221;: Comfort Meets Style</strong></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We&#8217;re talking about a pair of leggings that say &#8220;I&#8217;m comfortable, but I chic .&#8221; Find a pair with a little structure that can moonlight as real pants. You want something that hugs you in all the right places but doesn&#8217;t cut off circulation when you&#8217;ve been sitting in the car for hours.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><a href="https://amzn.to/4d5cfUS" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="607" height="1024" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/yoga-pants-607x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5361" style="width:371px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/yoga-pants-607x1024.jpg 607w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/yoga-pants-178x300.jpg 178w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/yoga-pants.jpg 679w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 607px) 100vw, 607px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These <a href="https://amzn.to/4d5cfUS" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">flared-leg</a> yoga pants with a fitted crossover waist look great dressed up or down, with sneakers, sandals, or heels. And they still have pockets for your phone. You&#8217;ll never want to take them off.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These aren&#8217;t your &#8220;I&#8217;m running to the grocery store and hoping I don&#8217;t see anyone I know&#8221; leggings. No ma&#8217;am. These are your &#8220;I could bump into Joanna Gaines at a gas station and feel confident enough to ask her for design tips&#8221; leggings.</p>

<ol start="3" class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>The Magical Convertible Shirt: More Looks Than You Have Rest Stops</strong></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Invest in a button-down that can be worn more ways than you can count. Tie it up, let it loose, layer it over your maxi dress &#8211; the possibilities are endless. Look for something in a light, breathable fabric that won&#8217;t wrinkle if you accidentally use it as a pillow during an impromptu car nap.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://amzn.to/3LFASvN" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="640" height="879" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/button-down.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5362" style="width:434px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/button-down.jpg 640w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/button-down-218x300.jpg 218w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I love the look and feel of <a href="https://amzn.to/4cMyRK9" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/4cMyRK9" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">this long-sleeve option</a>. It&#8217;s light enough for when it&#8217;s hot, it&#8217;s loose-fitted, and the crinkly fabric hides all the wrinkles. While the white is my favorite, they have tons of cute color options to suit your personal taste.</p>

<ol start="4" class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Jean Shorts: The Unsung Summer Fashion Hero</strong></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, let&#8217;s talk about jean shorts, or as I consider them, the faithful sidekick of summer wardrobes everywhere. You want a pair that&#8217;s not too short (because nobody needs to be picking denim out of their nether regions), but not too long (because we&#8217;re not filming a 90s sitcom, ladies).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Look for a mid-length pair with a bit of stretch. These cuties are gonna take you from casual walks through downtown to impromptu hikes when your husband decides he&#8217;s suddenly Bear Grylls. Plus, they pair perfectly with every top in your capsule wardrobe. It&#8217;s like they&#8217;re the Switzerland of bottoms &#8211; they get along with everybody.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="308" height="879" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/judyblue-shorts.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-6596" style="width:209px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/judyblue-shorts.jpg 308w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/judyblue-shorts-105x300.jpg 105w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These <a href="https://amzn.to/44V0qjx" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/44V0qjx" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Judy Blue denim shorts</a> are a great compromise in style and comfort. I love the loose yet stretchy feel that holds its shape after multiple wears and looks stylish, whether you pair it with a tank or an oversized top. And they&#8217;re long enough to cover all the goods without looking like you&#8217;re headed to church camp.&nbsp;There&#8217;s a reason these shorts are trending so hard. </p>

<ol start="5" class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Tennis Skirt: Not Just for Tennis Buffs</strong></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My new favorite wardrobe piece is a black fitted tennis skirt. I don&#8217;t know why it took me so long to jump on the bandwagon! When I wear my tennis skirt, I instantly feel like I upgraded my wardrobe. It is uber comfy, holds its shape, and makes your legs look gooood. Pair it with a tee, tank, sneakers, or sandals: this is going to be your fave versatile little number. You can go from hiking to shopping and to then to the gym and look fabulous everywhere you go. Yay for fewer outfit changes!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://amzn.to/3ycOprz" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="679" height="909" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/tennis-skirt.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5365" style="width:357px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/tennis-skirt.jpg 679w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/tennis-skirt-224x300.jpg 224w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 679px) 100vw, 679px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This one is an Amazon favorite for its longer length, color options, breathability, and comfort. It&#8217;s made of polyester and spandex for ultimate stretch. If, like me, you prefer something a little shorter, then you&#8217;ll love this option with pockets. It has all the features of the previous skirt, but it is made of nylon and spandex and has a higher rise, which, in my opinion, is more figure-flattering. </p>

<ol start="5" class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Tank Tops: Your Layering BFFs</strong></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tank tops are the unsung heroes of any travel wardrobe. If you check my suitcase at any time of the year, you&#8217;ll never find it without at least a couple of tanks. I swear half of my closet is tank tops. They&#8217;re my every-season go-to for layering. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pack a few in neutral colors that&#8217;ll go with everything and can be worn solo or as a base layer. These are perfect for those sweltering days when the AC in your car decides to take a vacation of its own. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://amzn.to/3Yawmg8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="528" height="879" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/tank.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5366" style="width:312px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/tank.jpg 528w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/tank-180x300.jpg 180w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These <a href="https://amzn.to/3Yawmg8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cotton, racerback tanks</a> are perfect for pairing with shorts, jeans, yoga pants, or a skirt. Just roll them in your luggage and then pull them out and wear them with minimal wrinkling. And they&#8217;re priced at less than $15 (at the time this was written), which is a deal.&nbsp;</p>

<ol start="6" class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Classic Tees: The Staple That Keeps On Giving</strong></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A well-fitted tee is the perfect road trip companion. It can be dressed up with your jean shorts and some statement jewelry for a casual dinner, or paired with your yoga pants or tennis skirt for a comfy day of sightseeing. And let&#8217;s be real, they&#8217;re perfect for those days when you just can&#8217;t even. We all have those days, especially when you&#8217;ve been trapped in a car with your family for hours on end.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><a href="https://amzn.to/3WufaB5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="379" height="879" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/ribbed-tee.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5367" style="width:321px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/ribbed-tee.jpg 379w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/ribbed-tee-129x300.jpg 129w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 379px) 100vw, 379px" /></a></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The secret to a good road trip tee is finding the perfect fabric that doesn&#8217;t look like you&#8217;ve been wrestling with a wallaby. These <a href="https://amzn.to/3WufaB5" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ribbed GAP tees</a> are my favorite. They&#8217;re a breathable cotton/poly blend, yet the ribbed material keeps the wrinkles from being crammed in a suitcase from being so pronounced. And the stretch helps it keep its shape all day. </p>

<ol start="7" class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Sandals That Won&#8217;t Kill Your Feet: Because Blisters Are the Devil</strong></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For the love of all that&#8217;s holy, pack shoes that can handle extra-long periods of walking. We know better than trying to walk miles in flip flops. Look for sandals with arch support and comfort that won&#8217;t leave you bandaging blisters all evening. You want something that can transition from a theme park to a nice restaurant without making you look like you&#8217;re lost. It&#8217;s possible to prioritize comfort AND style. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="695" height="518" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/sandals.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5368" style="width:521px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/sandals.jpg 695w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/sandals-300x224.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 695px) 100vw, 695px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before you think I&#8217;ve lost my mind, it is possible to say Crocs and cute in the same sentence. These aren&#8217;t your typical hospital shoes. These <a href="https://amzn.to/4ddqwPD" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">platform Crocs Sandals</a> are comfy and perfect for dressing up or down. And if you really want a sandal that is eye-catching AND can handle the trails, these <a href="https://amzn.to/46d80Wv" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/46d80Wv" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sorel Kinetic Sandals might fit the bill. They are definitely not your average budget sandal, but they are crazy comfortable,</a> a little funky, and a whole lot of fun.  </p>

<ol start="8" class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Sneakers: For When You Need to Make a Run For It</strong></li>
</ol>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether you&#8217;re sprinting to catch that tour bus or just need some extra support for a looooong day of walking, it&#8217;s essential that you wear comfortable shoes. Look for a pair of sneakers that&#8217;s both comfortable and stylish &#8211; because who says you can&#8217;t look cute while you&#8217;re powerwalking through the airport to make your connection?</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The right sneakers can add a sporty-chic vibe to your maxi dress or complement your jean shorts for a classic all-American look. Plus, they&#8217;re perfect for those moments when your kids decide that yes, they do want to climb every single rock in the Grand Canyon.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="980" height="594" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/reebok-sneakers.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5369" style="width:612px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/reebok-sneakers.jpg 980w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/reebok-sneakers-300x182.jpg 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/reebok-sneakers-768x466.jpg 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These <a href="https://amzn.to/4rpb4aB" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/4rpb4aB" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Vintage Reebok sneakers</a> are a classic and some of the most comfy shoes I&#8217;ve owned. I&#8217;m also partial to these <a href="https://amzn.to/4aDzINw" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/4aDzINw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sam Edelman sneakers</a>. They&#8217;re well-made and effortlessly stylish, and my feet feel great walking in them all day. I wore them all over Europe with no blisters. </p>

<ol start="9" class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>The &#8220;Hide My Bedhead&#8221; Hat: A Road Trip Miracle Worker</strong></li>
</ol>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-full is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="679" height="880" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/hat.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-5370" style="width:391px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/hat.jpg 679w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/hat-231x300.jpg 231w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 679px) 100vw, 679px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Find yourself a hat that says &#8220;I woke up like this,&#8221; even when &#8220;this&#8221; means you&#8217;ve been sleeping in a car for the past 300 miles. A <a href="https://amzn.to/3WdgWFy" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">wide-brimmed sunhat</a> or a fun <a href="https://amzn.to/3LxbUyL" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">baseball cap</a> will do the trick. Not only will it hide your travel-worn hair, but it&#8217;ll also protect you from the sun. Because let&#8217;s face it, nothing ruins a good trip like a bad sunburn. You want to come home with memories, not peeling skin.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Mix and Match Magic: Creating Outfits That&#8217;ll Make You Look Like a Fashion Wizard</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/outfit.png" alt="" class="wp-image-5372" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/outfit.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/outfit-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/outfit-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now that we&#8217;ve got our key pieces, let&#8217;s talk strategy. The beauty of a capsule wardrobe is that everything works together, like a well-oiled machine, and reduces the amount of pieces you need to pack.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That maxi dress? Wear it as is for dinner, throw your convertible shirt over it for a casual lunch look, or hike it up and tie it for an impromptu beach day. Those yoga pants? Perfect for a long car ride, but add some statement earrings and some sandals and you&#8217;re ready for a night out. That tennis skirt transitions from hiking to brunch with just a change of shoes and some earrings.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Jean shorts are your best friend here. Pair them with a tank and sneakers for a day of sightseeing, or dress them up with your convertible shirt and sandals for a casual dinner. And don&#8217;t forget the classic tee and jean shorts combo &#8211; it&#8217;s a look that&#8217;s as American as apple pie and just as satisfying.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Layering is your friend, especially when you&#8217;re dealing with car AC that&#8217;s colder than your mother-in-law&#8217;s stare. That convertible shirt you packed can save you from freezing and add some pizzazz to your outfit. Throw it over your maxi dress for chilly evenings, or tie it around your waist with your tank top and jean shorts for a look that says &#8220;I&#8217;m stylish, but I&#8217;m also prepared for any weather scenario.&#8221;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The  Extras</strong>: Bringing it All Together</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, let&#8217;s talk about those little extras that can make or break your trip. These are the supporting actors who don&#8217;t get enough credit but really take that show up a notch to give you a chic road trip wardrobe.</p>

<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Wrinkle-release spray</strong>:&nbsp; You&#8217;ll want to pack this because ironing on vacay is for suckers. A few spritzes of <a href="https://amzn.to/3W91LwY" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">this magical spray</a>, and you&#8217;re good to go. It&#8217;s like a magic wand for your clothes, minus the fairy godmother.</li>

<li><strong>Packing cubes:</strong> Organize like a boss, even if the rest of your life is chaos. These little fabric miracles will change your life. If you like to stay organized, save space, and keep your bag looking nice and tidy, you&#8217;ll want to use these <a href="https://amzn.to/3Wj4fJd" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">compression packing cubes from Well-Traveled</a>.</li>

<li><strong>A cute bag that fits everything:</strong> From snacks to souvenirs, find a tote or backpack that can handle it all and still look good on your arm. You want something big enough to carry your essentials (and by essentials, I mean snacks), but not so big that you&#8217;re tempted to pack your entire vanity. Check out all my favorite&nbsp;<a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/best-mom-bags-for-travel" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mom travel bags here</a>.&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong>Jewelry:</strong> A few key pieces can transform your outfits from &#8220;I&#8217;ve been in a car all day&#8221; to &#8220;I&#8217;m ready for a night on the town.&#8221; Think versatile pieces that go with everything &#8211; maybe some <a href="https://amzn.to/4bX6V51" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">simple studs</a>, a <a href="https://amzn.to/46hNJOh" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">simple layered necklace</a>, and some stretchy <a href="https://amzn.to/3Whe5eF" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">stacked bracelets</a>. These will easily add simple flair to your road trip outfits.&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong>Shades:</strong> A trendy pair of sunglasses can take your outfit from drab to glam. Plus, it will save your eyeballs, too. </li>

<li><strong>Scarf: </strong>A <a href="https://amzn.to/46oLNUi" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">lightweight scarf</a> can serve multiple purposes. Use it as a headband, a hair tie, or a belt. It&#8217;s the MacGyver of accessories.</li>

<li><strong>Rain Jacket:&nbsp;</strong>If your vacation looks like rain, then keeping your road trip wardrobe clean and dry is a priority. Don&#8217;t forget to pack a <a href="https://amzn.to/46sd2xe" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rain jacket</a> or <a href="https://amzn.to/3YmCYrV" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">poncho</a> to avoid unfashionable soggy britches.&nbsp;</li>

<li><strong>Light Cardigan or Jean Jacket:</strong> If you&#8217;re like me and constantly cold, you might toss in an extra <a href="https://amzn.to/4deyWWO" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/4deyWWO" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">jacket</a> if you&#8217;re lucky enough to have a chilly evening in the summer. </li>
</ol>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Real Talk: Embracing the Journey (and the Occasional Fashion Faux Pas)</strong></h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/woman-on-journey.png" alt="" class="wp-image-5373" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/woman-on-journey.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/woman-on-journey-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/woman-on-journey-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, y&#8217;all, let&#8217;s have a heart-to-heart. Even with all this planning and these fabulous Amazon finds, there will be days when you don&#8217;t feel like a fashion icon. There will be times when your hair is a mess, your clothes are wrinkled, and you feel about as glamorous as a truck stop hot dog.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But here&#8217;s the thing: that&#8217;s okay. In fact, it&#8217;s more than okay &#8211; it&#8217;s part of the road trip adventure. Some of the best memories come from those imperfect moments. The time you had to wear your pajama pants to breakfast because you spilled coffee on your only clean pair of shorts. The day you all got caught in a surprise rainstorm and ended up looking like drowned rats. These are the stories you&#8217;ll laugh about later, the ones that make the trip memorable.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So yes, pack your cute outfits and plan your stylish looks. But also, be ready to embrace the chaos of your next road trip. Because at the end of the day, the most important thing you can wear on a road trip is a smile and a sense of adventure.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wrapping-Up Road Trip Outfit Ideas for Summer</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Y&#8217;all, we&#8217;ve done it. We&#8217;ve cracked the code on road trip style that&#8217;s comfier than your favorite sweatpants but looks like you&#8217;ve got a personal stylist hiding in the trunk. With these Amazon finds and a little mix-and-match magic, you&#8217;re ready to hit the highway looking like the queen you are.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Remember, life&#8217;s too short for bad outfits and boring road trips. So pack that bag, crank up the tunes, and get ready to make some memories. And if all else fails, don&#8217;t forget to bring your confidence: it&#8217;s the best accessory, and it doesn&#8217;t take up any space in your suitcase.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now, if you&#8217;ll excuse me, I need to go have a stern talk with my credit card about the damage we&#8217;re about to do on Amazon. Happy trails!</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Listen, we&#8217;ve all been there – stuck in a car with our loves for hours on end, watching the same stretch of highway roll by, wondering if we can fashion a parachute out of fruit snack wrappers and make a break for it. But take heart, y&#8217;all. You&#8217;re full-fledged players, and let me tell you, nothing brings out your competitive side quite like trying to spot a <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/best-oahu-beaches" data-type="post" data-id="3996">Hawaii</a> license plate on I-35. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">My List of 35 Fun Road Trip Games</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">From classic <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/things-to-do-on-a-long-car-ride-with-kids" data-type="post" data-id="3484">road trip games</a> to word games to trivia games to laugh your a$$ off games, your next long car ride will keep both kids and adults entertained. These 35 fun road trip <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/friendsgiving-games" data-type="post" data-id="4191">games</a> are the best way to pass the time!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/license-plate-game.png" alt="license plates" class="wp-image-5310" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/license-plate-game.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/license-plate-game-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/license-plate-game-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The License Plate Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Try to spot license plates from all 50 states. Keep a checklist and mark off each state as you see it. The first person to spot a new state gets a point. Alternatively, try to create words or phrases using the letters on license plates.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Option: You can even use one of these <a href="https://amzn.to/4bGcMeV" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">license plate game journals</a> to keep track of all your road trips. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>I-Spy</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> This easy-to-play game is perfect even with the smallest passenger. One player chooses an object visible from the car and says, &#8220;I spy with my little eye something that is&#8230;&#8221; followed by a descriptive clue (e.g., color, shape, size). Other players take turns guessing until someone identifies the object correctly.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>20 Questions</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Here&#8217;s a throwback game for the parents. One person thinks of a person, place, or thing. Others take turns asking yes/no questions to guess what it is, with a maximum of 20 questions. If no one guesses correctly after 20 questions, the thinker reveals the answer.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Alphabet Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Players search for words on road signs, billboards, or license plates that start with each letter of the alphabet, in order. The first person to complete the alphabet wins. For a cooperative version, work together to find all the letters.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Would You Rather</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Players take turns asking &#8220;would you rather&#8221; questions with two choices, often silly or outrageous. For example, &#8220;Would you rather have fingers as long as your legs or legs as short as your fingers?&#8221; Everyone answers and discusses their choices.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Name That Tune</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> One person hums or sings a short part of a song without lyrics. The first person to correctly guess the song title gets a point and becomes the next hummer/singer.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Movie Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Start by naming an actor. The next player must name a movie that the actor was in. The following player names another actor from that movie, and so on. If a player can&#8217;t think of a connection, they&#8217;re out. Last player standing wins.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/cars.png" alt="cars" class="wp-image-5311" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/cars.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/cars-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/cars-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Spot the Car</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Choose a specific car model, color, or feature (e.g., red cars, pickup trucks, cars with roof racks). Each player counts how many they see in a set time period. The player with the most sightings wins.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Story Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> This game is easy to play and fun for everyone in the car. One person starts a story with a single sentence. Each player then adds one sentence to continue the tale. Try to create the most outrageous or funny story possible. You can also set a theme or genre for added challenge.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Geography Chain</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> The first player names a geographical location (city, country, river, etc.). The next player must name a place that starts with the last letter of the previous place. For example: London &#8211; New York &#8211; Kiev &#8211; Vienna. No repetitions allowed.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Two Truths and a Lie</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Think you know your car mates well? Here&#8217;s your chance to find out with this favorite party game. Each player tells three statements about themselves – two true and one false. Other players guess which statement is the lie. Each play scores a point for correct guesses and successful deceptions.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Rhyme Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> One person says a word, and others take turns saying words that rhyme with it. Continue until no one can think of a new rhyming word. The last person to provide a rhyme wins the round and chooses the next word.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Categories</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Choose a category (e.g., animals, foods, countries). Players take turns naming items in that category. If a player can&#8217;t think of an item or repeats one, they&#8217;re out. Last player standing wins and picks the next category.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Memory Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Start with &#8220;I&#8217;m going on a picnic, and I&#8217;m bringing&#8230;&#8221; The first player adds an item. Each subsequent player must recite the entire list and add a new item. Players are out if they forget an item or add one out of order.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/celebrity.png" alt="celebrity" class="wp-image-5312" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/celebrity.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/celebrity-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/celebrity-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Guess the Celebrity</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> One player thinks of a celebrity. Others ask yes/no questions to narrow down who it might be. Set a limit of 20 questions or keep going until someone guesses correctly.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Singing Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> One person sings a line from a song. The next player must sing a line from a different song that starts with the last word of the previous song. Continue as long as possible. First person who can&#8217;t think of a song is out.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Who Am I?</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Write the names of famous people on sticky notes and place them on players&#8217; foreheads. Players take turns asking yes/no questions about their identity. The first to guess their character wins.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Emoji Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> One person describes a movie, book, or song using only emojis (either verbally or by drawing). Other players try to guess what it is. The first to guess correctly gets to describe the next item.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Word Association</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> One person says a word, and the next person says the first word that comes to mind in association with it. Continue the chain as long as possible. Try to reach 50 words without breaking the chain.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Silent Charades</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> One player acts out a movie, book, TV show, or phrase without making any noise. Remaining players try to guess what it is. Set a time limit for each round. The first to guess correctly gets to act next.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/one-minute.png" alt="one minute timer" class="wp-image-5313" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/one-minute.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/one-minute-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/one-minute-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Minute Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> The driver announces the start of a minute. Players must guess when exactly one minute has passed without looking at any time-keeping devices. The player closest to the actual minute mark wins.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Fortunately/Unfortunately</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> This game is always fun! Create a collaborative story where players alternate between fortunate and unfortunate events. Start with &#8220;Fortunately&#8230;&#8221; and the next player continues with &#8220;Unfortunately&#8230;&#8221; Keep the story going as long as possible.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Spell It Backwards</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> One player chooses a word and spells it backwards. Other players try to guess the original word. The first to guess correctly gets to choose and spell the next word backwards.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Animal Name Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> The first player names an animal. The next player must name an animal that starts with the last letter of the previous animal&#8217;s name. (Example: Lion. Narwhal. Llama. Armadillo&#8230;) No repetitions are allowed. Last player able to name an animal wins.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Fictionary</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> One player (the reader) finds an obscure word in a dictionary and reads it aloud. Other players invent definitions for the word. The reader collects and reads all definitions, including the real one. Players vote on which they think is correct. Points are awarded for guessing the right definition or fooling others with invented ones.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Grocery Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Start with &#8220;I went to the grocery store and bought&#8230;&#8221; Each player adds an item in alphabetical order. For example: &#8220;apples, bananas, carrots, dates&#8230;&#8221; Continue until someone can&#8217;t think of an item for their letter.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Famous Pairs</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> One person names one half of a famous pair (e.g., &#8220;peanut butter&#8221;), and others try to guess the other half (&#8220;jelly&#8221;). Take turns offering famous pairs. This can include fictional characters, historical figures, or common object pairings.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="597" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/travel-bingo-1024x597.jpg" alt="travel bingo" class="wp-image-5314" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/travel-bingo-1024x597.jpg 1024w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/travel-bingo-300x175.jpg 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/travel-bingo-768x448.jpg 768w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/travel-bingo.jpg 1500w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Travel Bingo</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Before the trip, create your own for free, purchase, or <a href="https://www.travelchannel.com/interests/road-trips/articles/road-trip-bingo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">download</a> these road trip bingo cards. I love these <a href="https://amzn.to/466REgQ" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mess-free, reusable BINGO cards</a>! They&#8217;re typically only about $10 for a 4-pack, so it&#8217;s a very affordable investment in your sanity. As you travel, players mark off items they spot. First to get five in a row (or cover the whole card) wins. </p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Rhyming Riddle Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&nbsp;<em>How to play:</em> One player says, &#8220;I spy something that rhymes with&#8230;&#8221; and provides a rhyming word for an object they can see. Other players try to guess the object. The first to guess correctly gets to offer the next rhyming riddle.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Movie Quote Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Players take turns quoting lines from movies. The first person to correctly identify the movie gets a point and offers the next quote. Consider setting a theme (e.g., comedies, Disney movies) to make it more accessible for all players.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Word Ladder</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Choose a starting word and an ending word of the same length. Players take turns changing one letter at a time to create new words, aiming to reach the ending word. For example, changing COLD to WARM: COLD &#8211; CORD &#8211; CARD &#8211; WARD &#8211; WARM.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Alphabet Category Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Choose a category (e.g., countries, foods, animals). Go through the alphabet, with each player naming something in that category, starting with the next letter. For an added challenge, try to go through the alphabet multiple times with the same category.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>License Plate Phrases</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Look at the letters on license plates of passing cars and try to create funny phrases or sentences using those letters as acronyms. For example, BRK 264 could become &#8220;Big Red Kangaroos 2 6 4ever!&#8221;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Telephone Game</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> This is a classic road trip game for kids. The first player whispers a phrase to the next person, who then whispers what they heard to the next person, and so on. The last person says aloud what they heard. Compare it to the original phrase and laugh at how it changed!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Landmark Challenge</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>How to play:</em> Before the trip, research landmarks or points of interest along your route. During the drive, challenge passengers to spot these landmarks first. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">25 Family Road Trip Hacks</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here are our top 25 family road trip hacks to keep you sane on your next long drive:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/bathroom-break.png" alt="" class="wp-image-5293" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/bathroom-break.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/bathroom-break-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/bathroom-break-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Scout Out Bathroom Breaks</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Don&#8217;t wait until it&#8217;s an emergency. Download the <a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/flush-toilet-finder-map/id955254528" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Flush Toilet Finder app</a>, so you&#8217;ll be able to scout out all the nearby public restrooms and avoid any side-of-the-road potty breaks.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Plan Your Route with Apps</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use apps like <a href="https://roadtrippers.com/about/road-trip-apps/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roadtrippers</a> to discover scenic routes and hidden gems. Schedule fun pit stops to stretch and explore quirky attractions. Turn an otherwise painful journey into a family adventure.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Navigation Helpers</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Get older kids involved with navigation apps or paper maps. Teach them basic skills and make them feel like co-pilots on the journey.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">DIY Mess Clean-Up Kit</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Equip your car with a DIY <a href="https://community.today.com/parentingteam/post/3-ways-to-handle-car-sickness-on-road-trips" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">mess clean-up kit</a> that will have you prepared for spills, car sickness, or any other unwelcome accidents. Complete it with a bath towel, gallon-size Ziploc bags, grocery sacks, wet wipes, sanitizing wipes, hand sanitizer, paper towels, bottled water, and a spray upholstery cleaner.&nbsp; You&#8217;ll be thanking yourself down the road.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Car Sickness Survival Kit</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pack <a href="https://amzn.to/3W96RKI" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dramamine</a>, <a href="https://amzn.to/3VPTZI8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ginger candies</a>, <a href="https://amzn.to/3LaZnRb" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">motion sickness patches</a>, Gatorade, and salty snacks to help combat nausea. Keep your clean-up kit on hand for emergencies. As a sufferer of motion sickness, this is a must-have for every road trip!&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">DIY Car Emergency Kit</h3>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/car-emergency-kit.png" alt="" class="wp-image-5296" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/car-emergency-kit.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/car-emergency-kit-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/car-emergency-kit-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Put together a <a href="https://www.hrccu.org/blog/emergency-roadside-kit/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DIY emergency kit</a> with supplies for vehicle repair, first aid kit, and weather protection. You never know what you might experience out on the road and you don&#8217;t want to be caught in the middle of nowhere without supplies in the case of an emergency.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Car Organizers and Storage Hacks</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use <a href="https://amzn.to/4eI4AgS" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">over-the-seat organizers</a>, <a href="https://amzn.to/3XLhLHX" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trunk bins</a>, and under-seat storage. Label compartments for easy access to snacks, toys, and gadgets. A little order does a lot to your sanity when you&#8217;re spending hours on long rides.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Ditch the Dirt</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&nbsp;Keep the sand, crumbs, and dirt under control with the <a href="https://amzn.to/4cUWobD" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">rechargeable car vacuum</a>. Kiddo spill a bag of Cheetos on the backseat car floor? Did a day at the beach mean a layer of sand everywhere? Stay on top of it with the handheld vacuum.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>DIY Car Trash Can</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Use a <a href="https://amzn.to/4eRigGA" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">large plastic container</a> lined with a grocery sack or small garbage bag as a makeshift trash can. Keep trash contained and dispose of it easily at rest stops.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fitted Sheet Seat Covers</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cover the back seats with a fitted sheet to catch crumbs and spills. Cleaning up is a breeze – just shake out the sheet and toss it in the wash.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/snack-container.png" alt="" class="wp-image-5294" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/snack-container.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/snack-container-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/snack-container-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Snack Attack Containers </h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pack healthy snacks, things like cereal, pretzels, dried fruit, or trail mix in <a href="https://amzn.to/3XQCoSZ" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reusable containers. </a>Avoid messy food and keep everyone happy and fed. You&#8217;ll save money and eat much healthier this way!&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Hydration Station</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ensure everyone has a reusable, insulated water bottle that you can keep filled the entire trip. Instead of reaching for another soda or juice, have cold water on hand to help cut the sugar habits. Keep some extra water bottles in the cooler for easy refills or hit up a drive-thru and ask for cups of ice water.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Individual Activity Bags</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Create personalized activity packs with sticker books, fidgets, toys, puzzles, and coloring supplies. Rotate items to keep kids entertained and curious. If you&#8217;re short on space, I love these&nbsp;<a href="https://mamapapabubba.com/2016/08/08/easy-portable-activity-kit-for-road-trips/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">binder-sized activity kits</a> by MamaPapaBubba!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Essential Front Seat Caddy</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Repurpose these <a href="https://amzn.to/3VTUqBm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">diaper caddies</a> to keep all your road trip essentials on hand in the front seat. You can stash tissues, chargers, headphones, medicine, money, etc for easy access. It&#8217;s a great way to keep everything you need within reach.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Audiobook and Podcast Party</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Download kid-friendly audiobooks and podcasts to keep the little minds engaged during your road trip. Use Bluetooth or portable speakers to share the experience and enjoy the ride together.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/playlist.png" alt="" class="wp-image-5295" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/playlist.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/playlist-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/playlist-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Road Trip Playlist Extravaganza</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Compile a killer playlist with everyone’s favorite tunes to make a long ride much more enjoyable. Take turns DJing and keep the vibes high and positive.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Interactive Car Games Bonanza</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Plan road trip games like “I Spy,” “20 Questions,” and <a href="https://amzn.to/3Lbv2Cc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">road trip bingo</a>. Use travel game boards and <a href="https://camperchamp.com/road-trip-printables/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">free printable game sheets</a> to keep the fun rolling.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Watch a Movie in Your Backseat Cinema</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Turn the backseat into a mini cinema with a tablet or portable DVD player. Pre-load movies and shows the kids like and let them enjoy their favorite flicks. This is my kiddos&#8217; favorite way to pass the time on a road trip.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Comfort is King</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Dress in comfy layers to adjust to changing temps. Also, be sure to pack a cozy blanket and travel pillow for maximum comfort and shut-eye.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/take-breaks.png" alt="" class="wp-image-5297" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/take-breaks.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/take-breaks-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/take-breaks-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Frequent Fun Breaks</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Set alarms for regular stretch and play breaks. Find parks or rest areas with play spaces to let kids burn off energy and break up the long stretches sitting in the car.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Road Trip Rewards</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Establish fun ground rules and reward kids for making good choices. Bring small inexpensive toys, or special snacks, or plan fun stops as rewards.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Memory Makers</strong></h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Task the kids with capturing memories. Whether you choose to kick it old school with a Polaroid camera or try out the newest photo editing app, kids will love being the photographers during your road trip journey.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Magnetic Games for the Car</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Give the kids magnetic boards and pieces for favorite board games like tic-tac-toe, Yahtzee, or Connect Four: no more lost pieces and endless entertainment for kids. You can easily turn any game into a magnetic car game with this <a href="https://choose-to-thrive.com/summer-road-trip-2-diy-travel-games/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DIY magnetic game guide</a> by Choose to Thrive.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">DIY Window Art</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let the kids use dry-erase markers or <a href="https://www.target.com/p/crayola-8ct-washable-window-markers/-/A-80914880?ref=tgt_adv_xsp&amp;AFID=google&amp;fndsrc=tgtao&amp;DFA=71700000012732808&amp;CPNG=PLA_Seasonal_Priority%2BShopping_Local%7CSeasonal_Ecomm_Home&amp;adgroup=Seasonal_Best+Sellers&amp;LID=700000001170770pgs&amp;LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&amp;network=g&amp;device=c&amp;location=9027275&amp;targetid=pla-313150004578&amp;ds_rl=1246978&amp;ds_rl=1247068&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw-ai0BhDPARIsAB6hmP5NI_3pF64OqCvaVHE0fE3RhtWWqQrrg1AAVxHhYF2LTGUFKkcg4q8aAl9iEALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">washable window markers</a> to draw on the car windows. It’s a creative outlet for both the big and little ones when you&#8217;re out of ideas and can be easily cleaned off at the end of the trip. And the kids will think you&#8217;re a super fun parent.&nbsp;</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1000" height="600" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/family-reflection.png" alt="" class="wp-image-5298" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/family-reflection.png 1000w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/family-reflection-300x180.png 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/family-reflection-768x461.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></figure>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">End-of-Day Reflection Time</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wrap up each day with a family debrief. Give the kids journals if they enjoy writing or drawing their thoughts. Share highlights and plan for the next day&#8217;s adventures. It’s a great way to bond and reflect on the fun moments.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Road trips can be a blast, but it could be another story if you&#8217;re <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/why-you-shouldnt-give-up-on-travel-when-you-have-young-kids" data-type="post" data-id="4569">traveling with the kids</a>. We&#8217;ve learned that preparing for the drive is just as important as <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/free-travel-planner" data-type="post" data-id="4912">planning</a> what to do when you get to your destination. That umpteen-hour drive to and from Disney World can have you cursing Cinderella before you even make it to the panhandle.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I mean, while we know we can&#8217;t expect joy-filled giggles or total peace and quiet the entire drive, I do have some great ideas to <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/35-fun-road-trip-games" data-type="post" data-id="5307">make the drive more enjoyable</a> and to help keep the kids from declaring total mutiny in the backseat. If you&#8217;ve got a road trip planned, you&#8217;ll definitely want to keep reading for sanity-saving <strong>things to do on a long car ride with kids</strong>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Kids&#8217; Activities and Games for a Long Car Ride</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Whether your long car ride is 2 hours or 20 hours, you&#8217;ll want to be prepared. Depending upon your kid&#8217;s age, stage, and ability to entertain themselves, you might need just a few fun ideas or an entire arsenal of <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/39-free-rainy-day-activities" data-type="post" data-id="3227">activities</a> that will help beat boredom without an overload of screen time. Be sure to add some of these items to your road trip packing list!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">LCD Writing Tablet</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="996" height="1024" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lcd-writing-tablet-996x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-6825" style="width:509px;height:402px" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lcd-writing-tablet-996x1024.jpg 996w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lcd-writing-tablet-292x300.jpg 292w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lcd-writing-tablet-50x50.jpg 50w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lcd-writing-tablet-768x790.jpg 768w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lcd-writing-tablet.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 996px) 100vw, 996px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I love these <a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z1FYWLZ?ref=t_ac_view_request_product_image&amp;campaignId=amzn1.campaign.38RDPURB757UT&amp;linkCode=tr1&amp;tag=meredithadkis-20&amp;linkId=amzn1.campaign.38RDPURB757UT_1773072236401" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Z1FYWLZ?ref=t_ac_view_request_product_image&amp;campaignId=amzn1.campaign.38RDPURB757UT&amp;linkCode=tr1&amp;tag=meredithadkis-20&amp;linkId=amzn1.campaign.38RDPURB757UT_1773072236401" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow sponsored">LCD writing tablets</a>! Kids can write, draw, and erase all day. The battery lasts about 12 months of use and is replaceable when it goes out, so you don&#8217;t have to worry about keeping it charged. Just toss it in a diaper bag or backpack and you have an instant creative outlet for the car ride.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Reusable Sticker Books</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For little ones on a long car ride, I love these <a href="https://amzn.to/4ea1IJg" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/4ea1IJg" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">reusable sticker books</a>! They&#8217;re safe for the car because the stickers easily peel off a car window or seat back. Whoever created these deserves a medal, says every parent who has scraped old stickers from their door panels after a long car trip.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Sticker Activity Books</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are lots of options for sticker/activity books, but I especially love these beautifully illustrated travel-themed ones for older kids. This <a href="https://amzn.to/3x3dvZg" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">50 States sticker book</a> is fun and is a great geography lesson, especially if you&#8217;ll be crossing several state lines during your road trip. This <a href="https://amzn.to/3xaPHTh" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/3xaPHTh" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">National Park book</a> is also a great idea if you&#8217;ll be road-tripping to any of these incredible parks.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Travel Activity Desk</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://images.surferseo.art/140c5b18-cc7d-4b87-b11f-c8992565bfb6.jpeg" alt="" style="width:509px;height:456px"/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If your kid prefers drawing on paper, then a <a href="https://amzn.to/3wSOsbv" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">travel activity desk</a> is awesome. Find one that has pockets for all of their supplies and easily zips open and closed, so you&#8217;re not hunting for markers and loose crayons the entire road trip.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Magnetic Puzzles and Games</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are all kinds of magnetic puzzles and games available, from tangrams to chess. I love that the pieces stay attached, so there&#8217;s less chance of losing them. My kids love <a href="https://amzn.to/3X5RGTt" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Minecraft</a>, so I&#8217;m excited to pull out this puzzle for our next road trip!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Magnetic Drawing Board</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The <a href="https://amzn.to/3yNn6nC" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/3yNn6nC" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">magnetic drawing board</a> is similar to a writing tablet, but in this case, the stylus moves tiny magnetic beads to the surface of the board. When you want to &#8220;erase&#8221; it, simply push the beads back down. This is a great sensory, mess-free activity for kids for long car rides.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Play Travel &#8220;I Spy&#8221;</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">No road trip is complete without road trip games. Here&#8217;s a game you can play the old-school way or get a <a href="https://amzn.to/3KtTYo8" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">pack of travel cards</a> to play this game with your family as a way to pass the time. It&#8217;s a great way to get the kids engaged in the world outside the car and sharpens their observation skills.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Lacing Toys</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1016" height="1024" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lacing-toy-1016x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-6826" style="aspect-ratio:1;object-fit:cover;width:338px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lacing-toy-1016x1024.jpg 1016w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lacing-toy-298x300.jpg 298w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lacing-toy-50x50.jpg 50w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lacing-toy-768x774.jpg 768w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/lacing-toy.jpg 1200w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1016px) 100vw, 1016px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">My girls loved these <a href="https://amzn.to/4s0CsM8" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/4s0CsM8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lacing toys</a> when they were little. They felt like they were learning to sew, while at the same time strengthening their fine motor skills. They&#8217;re great for car rides since there are no small pieces, plus they&#8217;re easily packable for your road trip.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Busy Boards</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A <a href="https://amzn.to/4rlRGdw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">busy board</a> is an engaging, sensory experience for your toddlers or preschoolers. Your little kids will be able to practice skills, such as flipping switches, zipping and buckling. They&#8217;ll love the textures and colors and learn basic skills that every school-age kid needs to know. These busy boards make it a fun way to pass the time on a road trip, as well as learn life skills in the car.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Play the Alphabet Game</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Similar to &#8220;I Spy,&#8221; the alphabet game gets your kiddos looking for letters of the alphabet on road signs, billboards, and license plates on your long car ride. It&#8217;s a great way to get them reading without realizing they&#8217;re doing it on the long car ride. I love these <a href="https://funlearningforkids.com/alphabet-worksheets/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">free printable alphabet activities</a> from Fun Learning for Kids!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Pack Legos</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You&#8217;re probably laughing right now, but seriously&#8230; This <a href="https://mamapapabubba.com/2014/06/11/portable-lego-kit-for-little-travellers/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">idea from MammaPapaBubba</a> is genius. You can create your own travel Lego kit that will let your kiddos build in the car for hours without dropping dozens of tiny Legos in the bottomless pit of your back seat.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Play a License Plate Game</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="705" src="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/license-plate-bingojpg-1024x705.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-6827" style="aspect-ratio:16/9;object-fit:cover;width:401px;height:auto" srcset="https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/license-plate-bingojpg-1024x705.jpeg 1024w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/license-plate-bingojpg-300x206.jpeg 300w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/license-plate-bingojpg-768x528.jpeg 768w, https://meredithadkisson.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/license-plate-bingojpg.jpeg 1500w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Here&#8217;s one of my favorite road trip games. I used to play the license plate game as a kid. Of course, we did it the old-school way with paper and pencil, but you can find some really neat games to bring along in the car, like this <a href="https://amzn.to/3KOGGTr" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Melissa and Doug version</a> or these <a href="https://amzn.to/4rrmuK1" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/4rrmuK1" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">License Plate Travel Bingo</a> cards.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Surprise Bags</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Packing some <a href="https://www.partythroughtheusa.com/2018/07/diy-blind-bags-for-surprise-toys.html" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.partythroughtheusa.com/2018/07/diy-blind-bags-for-surprise-toys.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">DIY blind bags</a> with some figurines your kids would love is so much fun. They&#8217;ll be thrilled about the surprise as they pull out unexpected fun things. On our trip to Disney, I ordered a big pack of little Disney toys on eBay for WAY cheaper than I would have paid at the park. And because it was a surprise to my kids, they were over the moon excited.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Road Trip Bingo</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are tons of free, printable Bingo games your kids can play on your long car ride, like <a href="https://www.travelchannel.com/interests/road-trips/articles/road-trip-bingo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">these from Tree Valley Academy</a> or <a href="https://www.bluey.tv/make/bingos-road-trip-bingo/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">these for your Bluey fans</a>.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Pro tip: Put them in page protectors in a binder, so you can continue to add to your travel Bingo collection over the years.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Game on a Nintendo Switch</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you don&#8217;t have one of these super-popular handheld gaming devices, it might be worth investing in one or borrowing one if you&#8217;ll be in the car for hours. While we typically try to avoid excessive amounts of screen time, desperate times call for desperate measures. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to help the kids stay entertained. (The Switch is also available in a <a href="https://amzn.to/3yNmFK4" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Lite version</a> at a lower price point. )</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Activities for Everyone for a Long Car Ride</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The opportunity to spend hours together on a long car ride can be a great time to bond, plan, and enjoy some road trip entertainment. Here are some great ideas for family activities that little kids, <a href="https://meredithadkisson.com/43-spring-break-ideas-for-teens" data-type="post" data-id="3342">teens</a>, and adults can either enjoy together or separately when we need a break from each other.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Save the Trip Planning For the Car</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://images.surferseo.art/966ab1b7-1b1e-482d-b2aa-0c8f5825c2ed.jpeg" alt="" style="width:558px;height:335px"/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you have a flexible week ahead of you at your destination, take the time to plan your car ride instead of nailing it all down before. Let the kids weigh in on meals, activities, etc. It will fill the time and let the kids have more buy-in on your road trip. This is especially important if you have older kids/teens who might be more reluctant about a family trip.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Listen to a Podcast</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It seems there are endless podcast choices available. Depending upon the age and interests of your family, choose one to listen to together, or download podcasts on individual devices for some quiet listening time. There are even podcasts made for children as young as two years old, so there&#8217;s definitely something for everyone.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Listen To Your Own Music</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you have a music subscription, download music to your child&#8217;s tablet or phone ahead of time when you&#8217;re connected to Wi-Fi. We have a Spotify family account, and each of us can create our own library of music. Having control over music on the drive gives everyone a little sanity and control over their environment when everyone is in need of some personal space and time.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Learn a New Language</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">An extended amount of time in the car is a great time to work on your second language skills. You could choose a podcast to listen to or practice on a free language learning app, such as <a href="https://www.duolingo.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Duolingo</a>. There are lots of options for practicing the language of your choice.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Listen to an Audiobook</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I love that I can download audiobooks on the Libby app from my public library. Listening to a novel is one of the best ways to pass the hours on long car rides. It&#8217;s free, and there are tons of choices. You can also sign up for an <a href="https://amzn.to/4c59CSv" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/4c59CSv" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">Audible membership</a> if your public library doesn&#8217;t offer this service.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Tip: If your local library doesn&#8217;t offer this or has many audiobooks available, check with a bigger city in your state. Some of them will allow residents of the state to create an account for free. If you&#8217;re in TX, you can get an online card from the <a href="https://houstonlibrary.org/manage-card" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Houston Public Library</a> and get FREE access to tons of books and audiobooks!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Find an Interesting Gas Station</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://images.surferseo.art/9d48ed7f-db3f-466e-bdf1-3261551fc823.jpeg" alt="" style="width:570px;height:380px"/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The South has its Bucees and the Northeast has its Wawa. If you&#8217;re into gas stations that seem to offer it all, you&#8217;ll find it at one of these locations.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There are also some incredibly <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/10greatplaces/2018/10/02/gas-stations/1435550002/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">unique gas stations</a> across the US that are worth a stop and might even be worth going out of your way to visit.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Make Foodie Stops</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If speed is your thing, then you might want to skip right over this. But if you love to try local food, then plan your drive around it. Some of our favorite stops have been at local spots that we&#8217;ve found on our drive. It&#8217;s much better than wolfing down some greasy fries while you&#8217;re driving, IMO.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Play &#8220;While You Were Sleeping&#8221;</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This might be one of my favorites. ???? When someone in the car falls asleep, everyone else QUIETLY creates a story about what happened while the sleeping passenger was snoozing. The goal is to make them believe you, so depending upon the gullibility of your crew, you can go as big as you want with your story.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Forbidden Words</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is a hilarious game to get everyone involved in. At the beginning of the trip, you set some words that are forbidden from being spoken, like &#8220;bathroom&#8221; or &#8220;hungry.&#8221; If someone in the car says one of these words, they are either out of the game or you could have them complete a task like eating some <a href="https://amzn.to/4bKUHxc" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">BeanBoozled jelly beans</a>. The rules are really up to you!</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Play Decades</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://images.surferseo.art/9b83e34b-6fab-45a6-9f3a-58417d661cf1.jpeg" alt="" style="width:588px;height:352px"/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is another favorite game of ours, and I don&#8217;t know if it has a real name, but that&#8217;s what we call it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Someone in the car calls out a decade. Then everyone takes turns picking out a song from that decade. It&#8217;s sure to get some laughs and likely some groans. <a href="https://open.spotify.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Spotify</a> playlists make this an easy game to play.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Watch a Movie</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of my favorite features of Netflix is that I can download hours of movies onto my kids&#8217; tablet or phone. This is great for airplane rides and really long car rides, especially if you don&#8217;t have cellular service or have limited data.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Take a Photo-Op</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Break up the drive by finding some Insta-Worthy photo ops along the way. It&#8217;s a great way to document your trip while you stretch your legs.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Find a Park</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://images.surferseo.art/9c33c5ae-37f2-41cb-8461-6753c1e3d57b.jpeg" alt="" style="width:584px;height:350px"/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Chances are, there are some fun parks or playgrounds along your travel route. If you&#8217;re traveling during the day, plan to stop and let the kids run off some steam. If they play hard enough, you might get some quiet nap time afterward.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Things to Do to Make it a Relaxing Long Car Ride</h2>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes, after a few hours on a long car ride, you can start to feel trapped or overwhelmed, especially if you or your kids are highly sensitive or have special needs. This is a struggle for our family, so I have to be proactive at trying to create a calm environment in the car. To help prevent meltdowns and overwhelm, these items help to encourage rest and calm on our road trips.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Pack Snacks!</h3>

<div class="wp-block-image">
<figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img decoding="async" src="https://images.surferseo.art/b432aeeb-9e94-42ac-9d0b-c36a3332f750.jpeg" alt="" style="width:612px;height:367px"/></figure>
</div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If we had to stop every time someone said, &#8220;I&#8217;m hungry,&#8221; we&#8217;d waste HOURS. But we&#8217;ll also do almost anything to avoid having &#8220;hangry&#8221; passengers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before your trip, it&#8217;s a great idea to go snack shopping. Let the kids pick out their faves, but make sure you also pack some healthy snacks. We love to bring a small cooler to toss in some string cheese, apple slices, and grapes.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Headphones or Earplugs</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Having a pair of headphones or earplugs for every person is going to make your road trip so much easier when everyone wants to listen to their own music, show, etc. I love having wireless headphones, but it&#8217;s helpful to have a wired pair on hand in case you aren&#8217;t able to charge a set.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes, you don&#8217;t want to listen to anything but need some quiet. My daughter has misophonia and is very easily overstimulated by our sounds. On a road trip, she either uses her <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Apple-Generation-Cancelling-Transparency-Personalized/dp/B0BDHWDR12" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">noise-canceling Airpod Pros</a> to completely drown us out or wears <a href="https://amzn.to/4bdM67b" target="_blank" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/4bdM67b" rel="noreferrer noopener">these Loop Quiet 2 earplugs</a> to help muffle sounds.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is an essential part of your road trip. Finding a travel pillow that works to support your head and neck will make a huge difference on your road trip and help guarantee that you&#8217;ll get some good rest.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re part giraffe like me and have a hard time getting enough neck support, then you might love this unique <a href="https://amzn.to/459lGzP" data-type="URL" data-id="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LB7REFK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">neck pillow. <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Eye Masks</h3>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These <a href="https://amzn.to/3xdhKBz" data-type="link" data-id="https://amzn.to/3xdhKBz" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">silk, adjustable eye masks</a> should be part of your road trip essentials.
