And if you’re a highly sensitive parent, it can be incredibly challenging for you, too! The confined space, constant motion, engine noise, changing scenery, and inability to move freely can create the perfect storm for sensory overload in even a non-sensory sensitive child. Add in excitement, anxiety about the destination, lack of sleep, or disrupted routines, and it’s no wonder our sensitive kids majorly struggle on long car rides.

The KEY is recognizing that what others might deem “bad behavior” is often your child’s nervous system trying to cope with too much stimulation and alerting you to your child’s needs. Once I understood this about my daughter, everything changed. Instead of feeling frustrated, impatient, and full of dread, I started approaching our travels with empathy and preparation.

Your sensory kit is going to be your secret weapon. Think of it as a portable calm-down corner that travels with you. I keep ours in a dedicated backpack that stays packed and ready to go – because let’s be honest, sometimes those spontaneous ice cream runs turn into longer adventures!

Sensory Toys and Tactile Items That Work Wonders

Start with items that provide comforting tactile input:

• Weighted lap pad – Absolutely game-changing for long car rides and flights. The gentle pressure can help your child feel grounded and calm when everything else feels chaotic.  I have a 5-pound version for me, as well. It’s my number one travel essential!

• Stress balls (various textures) – Pack both smooth and bumpy varieties. This variety pack checks all the boxes. Some kids crave smooth surfaces while others need more intense tactile input. Large pom poms are some of my favorites because they’re super cheap when you have to replace them, and they won’t hurt anyone when they inevitably get chunked at someone’s head because they’re chewing too loudly. 

• Squishy fidget toys – Mochi squishies are great sensory toys for kids who need something to squeeze and manipulate with their hands and are fun for imagination play, as well. Their low price point makes them great for surprising kids with a new one each day of the trip.

• Smooth stones or textured fabric pieces – For older kids and teens,  a little mesh bag filled with smooth rocks that your kid can shake around or move her fingers through is relaxing. (Please remain vigilant and do not give to young children due to the risk of choking.) For younger kids, fabric touch and feel books, tag security blankets, simple cut pieces of varying fabrics, or bean bags made of differing fabrics are a great addition to the sensory bag.  

• Soft travel blanket – Non-negotiable in our family! Even in summer, having that familiar smell,  weight, and texture within reach provides instant comfort. Choose one that’s small enough not to overwhelm your car space but large enough to provide that cozy feeling. My kids are tweens and teens now, and still bring their favorite travel blanket with them on every trip.

Noise can be a huge trigger during car rides:

• Noise-canceling headphones – Invest in good quality ones! The engine, road noise, siblings talking, or music can quickly lead to sensory overload. • Playlist or audiobooks – Some kids actually need more auditory input, not less. Having their favorite songs or stories downloaded and ready gives you control over the auditory environment.

• Chewable jewelry or necklaces – Safe, wearable chewable jewelry options that won’t get lost in the car.

• Chewy toys (various textures) – Pack both smooth and bumpy chewy toy varieties. Some firm, some softer – what works one day might not work the next.

• Thick straws or chew tubes – Great chewy toy alternatives that provide the oral input they’re seeking.

Keep hands busy and provide visual input with these essentials:

• Coloring books – A classic for a reason! They provide focused visual input while keeping hands busy. Perfect for both littles, teens, and adults!

• Sticker books – Less messy than crayons and equally engaging. These reusable sticker books are my favorite. 

• Drawing boards – These LCD drawing boards are lightweight, reusable, and mess-free for creative expression.

• Simple fidget toys with visual elements – Toys that light up, change colors, or have interesting visual patterns. These light-up fidget spinners are favorites. 

• Color-specific items – Consider the color of items you’re packing. Some kids are calmed by certain colors, while others might be overstimulated by bright or busy patterns.

Smart Packing Tips for Success

The way you organize your road trip-friendly sensory kit can make or break your trip:

• Keep essentials within reach – Everything your child might need should be accessible from their seat, not buried in a suitcase. I learned this the hard way during a memorable meltdown flying home from Denver.

Practice these calming strategies at home before your trip. The middle of a highway isn’t the time to discover that your child hates the new fidget toy you packed or that the backup chewable item has a texture they can’t tolerate.

Also, pay extra attention to physical needs. Travel means disrupted schedules and environments. Keeping snacks and drinks on hand will help combat the hangry. Allow for extra rest/nap time, too. Sensory-sensitive kiddos need us to help monitor and anticipate their needs before the overwhelm hits.

Let’s be real – sometimes, despite all our preparation, meltdowns happen. And that’s okay! Having sensory needs doesn’t mean your family can’t travel; it just means you travel differently.

When a meltdown occurs, prioritize safety first. Pull over as soon as it’s safe to do so. Don’t try to power through or wait for the next rest stop if your child is in severe distress. 

Once stopped, resist the urge to talk too much or offer too many solutions at once. Sometimes kids need to work through their big feelings before they can accept comfort. Keep sensory items nearby, speak softly, and wait for cues about what might help.

Road Trip Ready: The Magic of Routine and Predictability

One thing that has dramatically improved our road trips is creating predictable routines around travel. For example, pack the sensory kit the night before. Make the same first stop for snacks. For my daughter, that means Starbucks as soon as we get through security at the airport or McDonald’s on a road trip. Listen to the same “travel playlist” for the first thirty minutes. You get the picture.

It has all the features of the previous skirt, but it is made of nylon and spandex and has a higher rise, which, in my opinion, is more figure-flattering.

Tank tops are the unsung heroes of any travel wardrobe. If you check my suitcase at any time of the year, you’ll never find it without at least a couple of tanks. I swear half of my closet is tank tops. They’re my every-season go-to for layering. 

Pack a few in neutral colors that’ll go with everything and can be worn solo or as a base layer. These are perfect for those sweltering days when the AC in your car decides to take a vacation of its own. 

These cotton, racerback tanks are perfect for pairing with shorts, jeans, yoga pants, or a skirt. Just roll them in your luggage and then pull them out and wear them with minimal wrinkling. And they’re priced at less than $15 (at the time this was written), which is a deal.

For the love of all that’s holy, pack shoes that can handle extra-long periods of walking. We know better than trying to walk miles in flip flops. You want something that can transition from a theme park to a nice restaurant without making you look like you’re lost. It’s possible to prioritize comfort AND style. 

Before you think I’ve lost my mind, it is possible to say Crocs and cute in the same sentence. These aren’t your typical hospital shoes. These platform Crocs Sandals are comfy and perfect for dressing up or down. And if you really want a sandal that is eye-catching AND can handle the trails, these Sorel Kinetic Sandals might fit the bill. They are definitely not your average budget sandal, but they are crazy comfortable, a little funky, and a whole lot of fun.  

8. Sneakers: For When You Need to Make a Run For It

Whether you’re sprinting to catch that tour bus or just need some extra support for a looooong day of walking, it’s essential that you wear comfortable shoes. Look for a pair of sneakers that’s both comfortable and stylish – because who says you can’t look cute while you’re powerwalking through the airport to make your connection?

20 Questions

How to play: Here’s a throwback game for the parents. One person thinks of a person, place, or thing. Others take turns asking yes/no questions to guess what it is, with a maximum of 20 questions. If no one guesses correctly after 20 questions, the thinker reveals the answer.

The Alphabet Game

How to play: Players search for words on road signs, billboards, or license plates that start with each letter of the alphabet, in order. The first person to complete the alphabet wins. For a cooperative version, work together to find all the letters.

Would You Rather

How to play: Players take turns asking “would you rather” questions with two choices, often silly or outrageous. For example, “Would you rather have fingers as long as your legs or legs as short as your fingers?” Everyone answers and discusses their choices.

Name That Tune

How to play: One person hums or sings a short part of a song without lyrics. The first person to correctly guess the song title gets a point and becomes the next hummer/singer.

The Movie Game

How to play: Start by naming an actor. The next player must name a movie that the actor was in. The following player names another actor from that movie, and so on. If a player can’t think of a connection, they’re out. Last player standing wins.

Spot the Car

How to play: Choose a specific car model, color, or feature (e.g., red cars, pickup trucks, cars with roof racks). Each player counts how many they see in a set time period. The player with the most sightings wins.

The Story Game

How to play: This game is easy to play and fun for everyone in the car. One person starts a story with a single sentence. Each player then adds one sentence to continue the tale. Try to create the most outrageous or funny story possible. You can also set a theme or genre for added challenge.

Geography Chain

How to play: The first player names a geographical location (city, country, river, etc.). The next player must name a place that starts with the last letter of the previous place. For example: London – New York – Kiev – Vienna. No repetitions allowed.

Two Truths and a Lie

How to play: Think you know your car mates well? Here’s your chance to find out with this favorite party game. Each player tells three statements about themselves – two true and one false. Other players guess which statement is the lie. Each play scores a point for correct guesses and successful deceptions.

The Rhyme Game

How to play: One person says a word, and others take turns saying words that rhyme with it. Continue until no one can think of a new rhyming word. The last person to provide a rhyme wins the round and chooses the next word.

Categories

How to play: Choose a category (e.g., animals, foods, countries). Players take turns naming items in that category. If a player can’t think of an item or repeats one, they’re out. Last player standing wins and picks the next category.

The Memory Game

How to play: Start with “I’m going on a picnic, and I’m bringing…” The first player adds an item. Each subsequent player must recite the entire list and add a new item. Players are out if they forget an item or add one out of order.

Guess the Celebrity

How to play: One player thinks of a celebrity. Others ask yes/no questions to narrow down who it might be. Set a limit of 20 questions or keep going until someone guesses correctly.

The Singing Game

How to play: One person sings a line from a song. The next player must sing a line from a different song that starts with the last word of the previous song. Continue as long as possible. First person who can’t think of a song is out.

Who Am I?

How to play: Write the names of famous people on sticky notes and place them on players’ foreheads. Players take turns asking yes/no questions about their identity. The first to guess their character wins.

The Emoji Game

How to play: One person describes a movie, book, or song using only emojis (either verbally or by drawing). Other players try to guess what it is. The first to guess correctly gets to describe the next item.

Word Association

How to play: One person says a word, and the next person says the first word that comes to mind in association with it. Continue the chain as long as possible. Try to reach 50 words without breaking the chain.

Silent Charades

How to play: One player acts out a movie, book, TV show, or phrase without making any noise. Remaining players try to guess what it is. Set a time limit for each round. The first to guess correctly gets to act next.

The Minute Game

How to play: The driver announces the start of a minute. Players must guess when exactly one minute has passed without looking at any time-keeping devices. The player closest to the actual minute mark wins.

Fortunately/Unfortunately

How to play: This game is always fun! Create a collaborative story where players alternate between fortunate and unfortunate events. Start with “Fortunately…” and the next player continues with “Unfortunately…” Keep the story going as long as possible.

Spell It Backwards

How to play: One player chooses a word and spells it backwards. Other players try to guess the original word. The first to guess correctly gets to choose and spell the next word backwards.

The Animal Name Game

How to play: The first player names an animal. The next player must name an animal that starts with the last letter of the previous animal’s name. (Example: Lion. Narwhal. Llama. Armadillo…) No repetitions are allowed. Last player able to name an animal wins.

Fictionary

How to play: One player (the reader) finds an obscure word in a dictionary and reads it aloud. Other players invent definitions for the word. The reader collects and reads all definitions, including the real one. Players vote on which they think is correct. Points are awarded for guessing the right definition or fooling others with invented ones.

The Grocery Game

How to play: Start with “I went to the grocery store and bought…” Each player adds an item in alphabetical order. For example: “apples, bananas, carrots, dates…” Continue until someone can’t think of an item for their letter.

Famous Pairs

How to play: One person names one half of a famous pair (e.g., “peanut butter”), and others try to guess the other half (“jelly”). Take turns offering famous pairs. This can include fictional characters, historical figures, or common object pairings.

Travel Bingo

How to play: Before the trip, create your own for free, purchase, or download these road trip bingo cards. I love these mess-free, reusable BINGO cards! They’re typically only about $10 for a 4-pack, so it’s a very affordable investment in your sanity. As you travel, players mark off items they spot. First to get five in a row (or cover the whole card) wins.

 How to play: One player says, “I spy something that rhymes with…” and provides a rhyming word for an object they can see. Other players try to guess the object. The first to guess correctly gets to offer the next rhyming riddle.

How to play: Players take turns quoting lines from movies. The first person to correctly identify the movie gets a point and offers the next quote. Consider setting a theme (e.g., comedies, Disney movies) to make it more accessible for all players.

Word Ladder

How to play: Choose a starting word and an ending word of the same length. Players take turns changing one letter at a time to create new words, aiming to reach the ending word. For example, changing COLD to WARM: COLD – CORD – CARD – WARD – WARM.

The Alphabet Category Game

How to play: Choose a category (e.g., countries, foods, animals). Go through the alphabet, with each player naming something in that category, starting with the next letter. For an added challenge, try to go through the alphabet multiple times with the same category.

License Plate Phrases

How to play: Look at the letters on license plates of passing cars and try to create funny phrases or sentences using those letters as acronyms. For example, BRK 264 could become “Big Red Kangaroos 2 6 4ever!”

The Telephone Game

How to play: This is a classic road trip game for kids. The first player whispers a phrase to the next person, who then whispers what they heard to the next person, and so on. The last person says aloud what they heard. Compare it to the original phrase and laugh at how it changed!

The Landmark Challenge

How to play: Before the trip, research landmarks or points of interest along your route. During the drive, challenge passengers to spot these landmarks first. Award points for each correct identification. This game not only keeps everyone engaged but also teaches about the areas you’re passing through.

Road trips can be a blast, but it could be another story if you’re traveling with the kids. We’ve learned that preparing for the drive is just as important as planning what to do when you get to your destination. That umpteen-hour drive to and from Disney World can have you cursing Cinderella before you even make it to the panhandle.

I mean, while we know we can’t expect joy-filled giggles or total peace and quiet the entire drive, I do have some great ideas to make the drive more enjoyable and to help keep the kids from declaring total mutiny in the backseat. Whether your long car ride is 2 hours or 20 hours, you’ll want to be prepared. Depending upon your kid’s age, stage, and ability to entertain themselves, you might need just a few fun ideas or an entire arsenal of activities that will help beat boredom without an overload of screen time. Be sure to add some of these items to your road trip packing list!

LCD Writing Tablet

I love these LCD writing tablets! Kids can write, draw, and erase all day. The battery lasts about 12 months of use and is replaceable when it goes out, so you don’t have to worry about keeping it charged. Just toss it in a diaper bag or backpack and you have an instant creative outlet for the car ride.

Reusable Sticker Books

For little ones on a long car ride, I love these reusable sticker books! They’re safe for the car because the stickers easily peel off a car window or seat back. Whoever created these deserves a medal, says every parent who has scraped old stickers from their door panels after a long car trip.

There are lots of options for sticker/activity books, but I especially love these beautifully illustrated travel-themed ones for older kids. This 50 States sticker book is fun and is a great geography lesson, especially if you’ll be crossing several state lines during your road trip. This National Park book is also a great idea if you’ll be road-tripping to any of these incredible parks.

Travel Activity Desk

If your kid prefers drawing on paper, then a travel activity desk is awesome. Find one that has pockets for all of their supplies and easily zips open and closed, so you’re not hunting for markers and loose crayons the entire road trip.

Magnetic Puzzles and Games

There are all kinds of magnetic puzzles and games available, from tangrams to chess. I love that the pieces stay attached, so there’s less chance of losing them. My kids love Minecraft, so I’m excited to pull out this puzzle for our next road trip!

Magnetic Drawing Board

The magnetic drawing board is similar to a writing tablet, but in this case, the stylus moves tiny magnetic beads to the surface of the board. When you want to “erase” it, simply push the beads back down. This is a great sensory, mess-free activity for kids for long car rides.

Play Travel “I Spy”

No road trip is complete without road trip games. Here’s a game you can play the old-school way or get a pack of travel cards to play this game with your family as a way to pass the time. It’s a great way to get the kids engaged in the world outside the car and sharpens their observation skills.

Lacing Toys

My girls loved these lacing toys when they were little. They felt like they were learning to sew, while at the same time strengthening their fine motor skills. They’re great for car rides since there are no small pieces, plus they’re easily packable for your road trip.

Busy Boards

A busy board is an engaging, sensory experience for your toddlers or preschoolers. Your little kids will be able to practice skills, such as flipping switches, zipping and buckling. Here’s one of my favorite road trip games. I used to play the license plate game as a kid. Of course, we did it the old-school way with paper and pencil, but you can find some really neat games to bring along in the car, like this Melissa and Doug version or these License Plate Travel Bingo cards.

Surprise Bags

Packing some DIY blind bags with some figurines your kids would love is so much fun. They’ll be thrilled about the surprise as they pull out unexpected fun things. On our trip to Disney, I ordered a big pack of little Disney toys on eBay for WAY cheaper than I would have paid at the park. And because it was a surprise to my kids, they were over the moon excited.

Road Trip Bingo

There are tons of free, printable Bingo games your kids can play on your long car ride, like these from Tree Valley Academy or these for your Bluey fans.

Pro tip: Put them in page protectors in a binder, so you can continue to add to your travel Bingo collection over the years.

Game on a Nintendo Switch

If you don’t have one of these super-popular handheld gaming devices, it might be worth investing in one or borrowing one if you’ll be in the car for hours. While we typically try to avoid excessive amounts of screen time, desperate times call for desperate measures. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to help the kids stay entertained. (The Switch is also available in a Lite version at a lower price point. )

The opportunity to spend hours together on a long car ride can be a great time to bond, plan, and enjoy some road trip entertainment. Here are some great ideas for family activities that little kids, teens, and adults can either enjoy together or separately when we need a break from each other.

Save the Trip Planning For the Car

If you have a flexible week ahead of you at your destination, take the time to plan your car ride instead of nailing it all down before. Let the kids weigh in on meals, activities, etc. It will fill the time and let the kids have more buy-in on your road trip. This is especially important if you have older kids/teens who might be more reluctant about a family trip.

Listen to a Podcast

It seems there are endless podcast choices available. Depending upon the age and interests of your family, choose one to listen to together, or download podcasts on individual devices for some quiet listening time. There are even podcasts made for children as young as two years old, so there’s definitely something for everyone.

Listen To Your Own Music

If you have a music subscription, download music to your child’s tablet or phone ahead of time when you’re connected to Wi-Fi. We have a Spotify family account, and each of us can create our own library of music. Having control over music on the drive gives everyone a little sanity and control over their environment when everyone is in need of some personal space and time.

Learn a New Language

An extended amount of time in the car is a great time to work on your second language skills. You could choose a podcast to listen to or practice on a free language learning app, such as Duolingo. There are lots of options for practicing the language of your choice.

Listen to an Audiobook

I love that I can download audiobooks on the Libby app from my public library. Listening to a novel is one of the best ways to pass the hours on long car rides. It’s free, and there are tons of choices. You can also sign up for an Audible membership if your public library doesn’t offer this service.

Tip: If your local library doesn’t offer this or has many audiobooks available, check with a bigger city in your state. Some of them will allow residents of the state to create an account for free. If you’re in TX, you can get an online card from the Houston Public Library and get FREE access to tons of books and audiobooks!

Find an Interesting Gas Station

The South has its Bucees and the Northeast has its Wawa. If you’re into gas stations that seem to offer it all, you’ll find it at one of these locations.

There are also some incredibly unique gas stations across the US that are worth a stop and might even be worth going out of your way to visit.

Make Foodie Stops

If speed is your thing, then you might want to skip right over this. But if you love to try local food, then plan your drive around it. Some of our favorite stops have been at local spots that we’ve found on our drive. It’s much better than wolfing down some greasy fries while you’re driving, IMO.

Play “While You Were Sleeping”

This might be one of my favorites. ???? When someone in the car falls asleep, everyone else QUIETLY creates a story about what happened while the sleeping passenger was snoozing. The goal is to make them believe you, so depending upon the gullibility of your crew, you can go as big as you want with your story.

Forbidden Words

This is a hilarious game to get everyone involved in. At the beginning of the trip, you set some words that are forbidden from being spoken, like “bathroom” or “hungry.” If someone in the car says one of these words, they are either out of the game or you could have them complete a task like eating some BeanBoozled jelly beans. The rules are really up to you!

Play Decades

This is another favorite game of ours, and I don’t know if it has a real name, but that’s what we call it.

Someone in the car calls out a decade. Then everyone takes turns picking out a song from that decade. It’s sure to get some laughs and likely some groans. Spotify playlists make this an easy game to play.

Watch a Movie

One of my favorite features of Netflix is that I can download hours of movies onto my kids’ tablet or phone. This is great for airplane rides and really long car rides, especially if you don’t have cellular service or have limited data.

Take a Photo-Op

Break up the drive by finding some Insta-Worthy photo ops along the way. It’s a great way to document your trip while you stretch your legs.

Find a Park

Chances are, there are some fun parks or playgrounds along your travel route. If you’re traveling during the day, plan to stop and let the kids run off some steam. If they play hard enough, you might get some quiet nap time afterward.

Things to Do to Make it a Relaxing Long Car Ride

Sometimes, after a few hours on a long car ride, you can start to feel trapped or overwhelmed, especially if you or your kids are highly sensitive or have special needs. This is a struggle for our family, so I have to be proactive at trying to create a calm environment in the car. To help prevent meltdowns and overwhelm, these items help to encourage rest and calm on our road trips.

Pack Snacks!

If we had to stop every time someone said, “I’m hungry,” we’d waste HOURS. But we’ll also do almost anything to avoid having “hangry” passengers.

Before your trip, it’s a great idea to go snack shopping. Let the kids pick out their faves, but make sure you also pack some healthy snacks. We love to bring a small cooler to toss in some string cheese, apple slices, and grapes.

Headphones or Earplugs

Having a pair of headphones or earplugs for every person is going to make your road trip so much easier when everyone wants to listen to their own music, show, etc. I love having wireless headphones, but it’s helpful to have a wired pair on hand in case you aren’t able to charge a set.

Sometimes, you don’t want to listen to anything but need some quiet. My daughter has misophonia and is very easily overstimulated by our sounds. On a road trip, she either uses her noise-canceling Airpod Pros to completely drown us out or wears these Loop Quiet 2 earplugs to help muffle sounds.

Invest in Travel Pillows

This is an essential part of your road trip. Finding a travel pillow that works to support your head and neck will make a huge difference on your road trip and help guarantee that you’ll get some good rest.

If you’re part giraffe like me and have a hard time getting enough neck support, then you might love this unique neck pillow. I was skeptical at first, but it was a game-changer on a 9-hour overnight flight.

Darken the Windows

If you’re traveling during the day, adding some removable window shades will help block out some of the sunlight and help your passengers get some rest during the drive, and cut down on glare.

Eye Masks

These silk, adjustable eye masks should be part of your road trip essentials. If you or your crew have trouble sleeping during the day, these lightweight eye masks provide a blackout environment to help you rest on the road.

Aromatherapy

Traveling in a car together can result in some interesting…aromas. To help keep it fresh, you might enjoy one of these travel diffusers. It sits in your cup holder and plugs into a USB outlet. Bring along your favorite essential oil blends and create a relaxing environment.

From toddlers to adults, a fidget can be a sanity saver on a long drive for your anxious or antsy travelers. For me, having something to do with my hands helps me stay off my phone.
